Dear cousin: I know you are going to come to Presidio, Texas in one week. I am going to tell you some good reasons why you should come to Presidio. First, I know you live in a big city. Presidio is a little peaceful town. Coming from Houston in an airplane is exciting, I have never flown in an airplane but I think it might be fun. You could tell me how it felt when you get here. Then, you are coming because your dad lost his job. Here at Presidio, there are not a lot of jobs. Your dad could be a teacher, a coach or police officer. Some do not win a lot of money however, some do. Another option is that your dad could go with my dad to work in Borger, Texas. My dad and uncle age working there. It is a little far it is like four hours. Finally,
Texas is included in the United States right now; however, it was once a part of Mexico. In 1821, Mexico was granted independence from Spain. Then Mexico was founded on a federal system of government, which also means some states were given lots of autonomy to control themselves; and Texas was once one of them. In order to improve Texas’ local development and population, Mexico’s government started a settlement program to encourage more and more people to come to Texas. One of the reasons why people liked to move to Texas was because the settlement program allowed foreigners to purchase their own land for a small price only if they have been living in Texas for at least ten years. Also, they had to regard Catholicism as their only religious
Originally named Misión San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo served as home to missionaries and their Indian converts for nearly seventy years. Construction began on the present site in 1724. In 1793, Spanish officials sectioned off San Antonio's five missions and distributed their lands to the remaining Indian residents. These men and women continued to farm the fields — once the mission's but now their own — and participated in the growing community of San Antonio.
When traveling to a foreign country you never know what to expect. Curiosity of people and cultural norms race through your head. That is how I felt the first time I flew into the Puerto Vallarta airport with my friend Ashley.
love/hate relationship with his association to West Point. He wrote a letter to his cousin back home in Ohio describing his feelings about the academy. The events that began on February 23, 1836 have roots that span as far back as 1808. This exploration into the events and carnage that took place before, during and after the Alamo will only go back to the events immediately leading up to the Alamo. Mainly the frame of mind the Mexican government had regarding the Texas settlers and the reasons leading to the confrontation at the Alamo.
To understand the real battle, one must appreciate its strategic context in the Texas Revolution.qv In December 1835 a Federalist army of Texan (or Texian,qv as they were called) immigrants, American volunteers, and their Tejanoqv allies had captured the town from a Centralist force during the siege of Bexar.qv With that victory, a majority of the Texan volunteers of the "Army of the People" left service and returned to their families. Nevertheless, many officials of the provisional governmentqv feared the Centralists would mount a spring offensive. Two main roads led into Texas from the Mexican interior. The first was the Atascosito Road,qv which stretched from Matamoros on the Rio Grande northward through San Patricio, Goliad, Victoria, and finally into the heart of Austin's colony. The second was the Old San Antonio Road,qv a camino real that crossed the Rio Grande at Paso de Francia (the San Antonio Crossingqv) and wound northeastward through San Antonio de Béxar, Bastrop, Nacogdoches, San Augustine, and across the Sabine River into Louisiana. Two forts blocked these approaches into Texas: Presidio La Bahía (Nuestra Señora de Loreto Presidio) at Goliad and the Alamo at San Antonio. Each installation functioned as a frontier picket guard, ready to alert the Texas settlements of an enemy advance. James Clinton Neillqv received command of the Bexar garrison. Some ninety miles to the southeast, James Walker Fannin, Jr.,qv subsequently took command at Goliad. Most Texan settlers had returned to the comforts of home and hearth. Consequently, newly arrived American volunteers-some of whom counted their time in Texas by the week-constituted a majority of the troops at Goliad and Bexar. Both Neill and Fannin determined to stall the Centralists on the frontier. Still, they labored under no delusions. Without speedy reinforcements, neither the Alamo nor Presidio La Bahía could long withstand a siege.
When a young man has to take over his family because his father walk away, all he needs is the support. Encouragement is the key to take over this difficult task. He eventually will learn how to deal with it and use that as an inspiration to keep moving forward. Amanda: I’ve had to put up a solitary battle all these years. But you’re my right hand bower! Don’t fall down, don’t fall! (Williams 939). These are the right words that will motivate anyone. This reminds me of my mom; when she told me that my dad was laid off from his job, six years ago. It was on winter time, when agriculture slows down, my mom at home with no job and my dad too. I was the only one working, with a low income check of six hundred every two weeks. There was stress all over the house. My dad use to get up at five am, and wouldn’t come home until six or seven pm, just looking for a job. There was days that I wouldn’t even see them just because I was working a lot of over time. It was a really difficult time for all of us but I remember the most important of all, we were together. One day my mother woke me up, she was sitting on my bed, she told me that she was so thankful for having a daughter like me, and that she really appreciated my help, that it was not my responsibility but I was taking care of like if it was mine. Due to the age of my dad, it was difficult for him to find a job, which was heart breaking for me. My mom and my dad were the motivation that I needed
I shall never surrender or retreat ... I Am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what it is due to his honor and that of his country-VICTORY OR DEATH." This was a letter sent by William Barret Travis during the siege of the Alamo on February 24, 1836. It was a cry for help to anybody and everybody willing to listen.
Have you ever been to Texas? I have been once. My trip to Texas was unbelievably awesome. I saw many of things on my way there. While we were there, I had loads of fun. Many things happened while we were there. Texas was the coolest place I have ever been.
Getting prepared and ready to explore something new is just minor compared to the actual adventure for a senior anticipating the departure of their school trip. I was a member along with 30 other classmates of the co-curricular group called Business Professionals of America, a club organized through our school. Our teachers, club officers, and all of the members had been planning and fundraising for our trip to New York City for months. The excitement grew more and more as each day got closer to take off. All of us were anixious to see The Empire State Building, "Ground Zero," a Broadway play, and the spectacular views of gorgeous ocean sunsets. We had all been told and were aware of the different surroundings of the environment, or culture we would be experiencing when we arrived. Different cultures are common throughout the world, even in different places around the United States. Going on a trip to explore New York City really made the differences in cultures aware to me.
Back in 2014 I had moved to Southern California from Las Vegas, Nevada. I had moved to California because my mom had a job offer after looking for a job for several months. I had to leave everything I knew. I had lived in Las Vegas my whole life. Growing up so close to California I have obviously been there but visiting is much different than living there. There were many things that I had to come to accustom to like the weather, new neighborhood and the most dreaded, a new school. Once I had moved to Redlands, California I had a week to get everything and attend my new school.
After almost two years in this new country, Greg came to Victor with another proposition of opening an office in Houston, Texas. According to Victor that was his most important career accomplishment to date and he was finally able to fulfill his childhood dream of living in the United States. Once our visas got approved our family head up north to land in the south of Texas. After a few years at the company, my dad decided to leave and once again start teaching math. My dad states that he loved his position at the company he felt like he wasn’t severing his new community
I can still remember how excited I was before take off, I mean it felt like forever while we sat in the plane waiting to take off. Just all the anticipation that was inside of me had just made the wait even longer for me. Finally, I heard the pilot say 'prepare for take off'. When I heard those words I was so overjoyed I could hardly contain myself. That rush I got once the plane took off was an experience like no other. The plane ride was about hours long and I enjoyed every minute of it. Little did I know, that was less than half of the fun I was going to have at Orlando.
