“What America needs is not closed borders or open borders, but smart borders” -Edward Kennedy. What Edward Kennedy was probably saying in this quote was that immigration is a good thing, our country was founded on immigrants. To let people cross our borders illegally and without regard to our laws, is not smart immigration. It is not smart for the country or for the legal citizens. Illegal immigration must be stopped and prevented. If illegal immigration is stopped then it would help the economy, help taxpayers, and the crime rate will go down. Definition The definition of illegal immigration is the migration of people across national borders in a way that violates the immigration laws of the destination country. Illegal immigrants are a …show more content…
Employers are looking for cheap labor and they find that with illegal immigrants. “Immigration experts believe that the key to reducing illegal immigration is by targeting the employers who draw and hire them (Miller 67). Illegals who commit criminal acts here in the United States should also be deported back to their home country. In addition to enforcing laws, state and local benefits should not be given to illegal immigrants. More than thirty state legislatures and local governments have recently placed restrictions on state benefits and rights in order to discourage illegal immigration (MIller …show more content…
“The economic and social consequences of illegal immigration across the 1,940 miles long American-Mexico border are staggering” (Miller, 29). This quote by the Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform, their goal is to eliminate illegal immigrants in Colorado. The costs associated with the Border Patrol has skyrocketed in today’s world (Miller 28). Los Angeles county alone reported spending $350 million a year on healthcare for illegal immigration (Miller 35). This is a lot of money for just one city. Illegal immigrants will also bring their traits into America. “Persistent flow of Hispanic immigrants threatens to divide and United States into two peoples, two cultures, and two languages. Unlike past immigrant groups, Mexicans and other Latinos have not assimilated into mainstream U.S. culture, forming instead their own political and linguistic enclaves and rejecting the Anglo-Protestant values that build the American dream.” (Miller 37) These immigrants flee from Mexico from all the crime but bring criminal traits with them (Zoye Ruehl). The illegal immigrants are breaking the law by coming to the United States illegally and continue their criminal behavior when they
Critics such as columnist Bob Confer is stating that unemployment would be much lower if illegal immigrants would not take jobs from American citizens. He is considering that jobs such as construction and maintenance held by illegal immigrants are skilled positions. According to the Pew Research Center, they do not categorize those jobs as skilled. Furthermore, the study presents that 26% of unauthorized employees are working in farming and fishing industries, 17% in cleaning and maintenance industries, and only 14% in construction (Passel and Cohn). When Alabama passed a new law, many legal and illegal immigrant left the state, leaving farmers with unpicked crop and unclean fish. In 2011 in Alabama, 211,000 were unemployed. Republican Governor Robert Bentley said that immigrants had stolen jobs from Americans. However, native-born Americans did not run to fill in those positions. One farmer said that he could not find 158 employees who would take the jobs those immigrants had previously performed (Dwoskin). Therefore, immigrants do not take Americans jobs; they contribute by doing work that Americans do not want to
It isn’t the desert that kills the immigrants. It isn’t the coyotes. It isn’t even the Border Patrol. What does kill the people “is the politics of stupidity that rules both sides of the border” (214-215) This quote shows the power of both sides of the border have and it is evident that it shows both sides are truly the blame for this problem. Both sides of the border should unite and come up with a solution to this severe problem of the immigration system.
The author, Jo-Ann Pilardi accurately writes about immigration in her article “Immigration Problem Is about Us, Not Them.” All Immigrants, whether they are legal or illegal know that having the chance to live in America, is a dream come true or in other words, “a chance in paradise.” America is known for its opportunities. Immigrants came to the United States for a very significant purpose. Their purpose and goal is to take advantage of the opportunities in the land known as, “the land of opportunity.” Immigrants did not come here to damage the country or to over burden its inhabitants. That author states, “Many of our political leaders talk hard line about immigration reform even though they know our country is mired in its demand for the
Illegal immigrants in the United States usually come from less developed countries or at least poorly developed regions of these countries. These illegal immigrants carry a totally different knowledge of culture, legal system and human rights when they came into this country. The most these people are victimized is when they are working, sometimes, these people can't even realized when they have become victims. Because of their status, illegal immigrants, it is very rare that they can find good positions in considerably big companies to start with. Usually, small businesses will take the risk to hire illegal immigrants, sometimes it may be because of these small businesses are trying to help those illegal immigrants who share same nationality with them, but, for most of the time, these undocumented migrant workers are much cheaper and easier to manipulate.
Out of the 11 million illegal immigrants currently residing in the United States, 8 million of them are currently working. Employers in America who want inexpensive workers, hire illegal immigrants and pay them under the table. Since the system does not have an efficient way of identifying and penalizing these employers, this has been an ongoing dilemma. As a result, the American economy suffers because illegal immigrants are not paying taxes like the rest of the legal citizens. Americans who are citizens consequently have difficulties finding jobs because employers would rather pay under the table so they can make higher profits. In my perspective, the employers are at fault here if they knowingly hire workers who are not eligible to work here. However, if the employer did not know about an immigrant’s illegal status than the immigrant is at fault for cheating the system. These are just some of the current issues related to illegal immigration t...
“Immigration is the term utilized to describe the action and process by which a citizen of one country relocates to another country after petitioning for residency into that country.” (Martinez). An immigrant, also known as an alien, is person or people who come from a foreign country. Aliens are broken down into two main categories: the legal aliens and the illegal aliens. But what are the differences between the two? Legal aliens owe allegiance to the country. In America, aliens have the opportunity of becoming legal by either having a green card or becoming an American citizen and having dual citizenship. Green cards holders are permanent residents who have been authorized to live and work in the U.S. legally but they are not American citizens. To become a citizen, you must be legal, know fluent English, have a clean record, and go th...
While the legal citizens are complaining about illegal immigrants taking up jobs in the low wage sector, this is not true. Undocumented immigrants are able to access those jobs because of the immobility of the American citizens working in the low wage sector (Nadadur 1048). On the other hand, the efforts of undocumented immigrants are not only realizable in the low wage sector, but also high wage sector that provides for white-collar jobs. Some of the illegal immigrants that reside in United States are highly qualified professionals and their input is significant in driving the U.S economy to greater heights. Within the population of undocumented immigrants,
The lack of enforcement of immigration policies will cause the greatest impact on America’s economy. One of the most controversial topics is how immigrants affect jobs and wages. Many argue that immigrants help the economy by working for the people that will not, but in reality they are taking Americans jobs and legal immigrants that have earned their rights. The main issue is wages: illegal immigrants are desperate for jobs and will do anything. Businessmen will take advantage of this and pay them significantly lower wages. Cheap labor negatively affects other workers. Studies show that immigrants push down wages and may cause other workers to leave a certain industry.
Illegals, Aliens, Undocumented (however you wish to call them) are often viewed as a burden to America. But are they really? Are American conscious of the contributions that “Illegal Aliens” bring to this country? “Illegal Aliens” have stimulated enormous economic wealth to this country. It is now the time to recognize those hard working underpaid immigrants and grant them the reform they deserved after so many years of being a shadow. I call to action an immediate immigration reform NOW!
Recently, the U.S. government has been cracking down on illegal aliens and employers are in danger of raids and lawsuits for hiring illegal immigrants. Many employers either do not require any documentation or accept copies of documents (Rousmaniere 24-25), regarding legalization. Immigrants are desired employees and companies continue to hire them even with the risks. By working for lower wages, they keep the costs of goods and services down; the illegal alien work force helps improve the U.S. economy (Nadadur 1037-1052). However, illegal immigrants can have a negative effect when they encroach on American job opportunities (Carter 8). Some economists argue that illegal aliens actually help the host-country’s economy by adding to the labor force. However, other economists state that too many illegal...
Those who support immigrants being protected by the law believe that immigrants help the economy by creating lower wages which enables companies to make better profits. According to Becky Akers and Donald J. Boudreaux, immigrants “should be allowed to contribute to the United States economy in the Constitutional and legal precepts that guarantee all immigrants the opportunity to pursue life, liberty, and happiness in the United States” (22). If immigrants were not here in the United States, the jobs they do might not even get done by anyone else (Isidore 103). Immigrants fill up the jobs that many Americans do not want. “Specialization deepens. Workers’ productivity soars, forcing employers to compete for their time by offering higher pay” (Akers and Boudreaux 25). As researcher Ethan Lewis said, “Economics professor, Patricia Cortes, studied the way immigrants impact prices in 25 large United States metropolitan areas. She discovered that a 10-percent increase in immigration lowered the price...
In modern times, illegal immigrants cost taxpayers billions of dollars each year. Immigrants of every kind use welfare to get by, which happens to be a main cause for the sudden rise in tax expenses. Illegal immigrants have a higher welfare use rate at 57 percent than native households in the sense of food stamps and Medicaid, but lower in the case of cash programs at just 23 percent. Because of this, restrictions on government benefits are not enforced, as they should be. Another problem is the way food stamps are handled when it comes to illegal immigrants. Companies responsible for food stamps sympathize with these people because they happen to be “vulnerable” to the plight of applying for these benefits. Food stamps are no longer seen as helping poor families receive proper nutrition because illegal immigrants have taken advantage, causing the companies to feed off of their dependency instead of those actually in need, such as poor families and the elderly. Illegal immigrants are not eligible for any assistance regarding healthcare, and therefore cannot get federal subsidies to buy health insurance or shop for coverage. However, nonprofit groups are beginning to see through this, and are offering medical care to illegal immigrants. While I firmly believe that everyone deserves medical treatment to recover from injuries or illnesses, this is another major reason as to why the cost of
What really is an illegal immigrant? It is defined as “an alien (non-citizen) who has entered a country without government authorization or remained beyond the expiration date of a visa”.
There are 11.8 million illegal immigrants in the united states. An immigrant is An Immigrant is a person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence. In the united states labor force about 5.1% is made up by illegal immigrants (5 facts of immigrants in the U.S). Part of this percent is because
Illegal immigration is a major problem which most of developed countries face in current economy. It has been major political issue for the political parties (republicans and democrats in America) and over years each party has different agenda to address the issue. Illegal immigration can be defined as movement of people from a source country to a destination country without any legal documents and violates destination countries immigration laws. People have moved across lands over years to escape a war situation or to get better facilities in different country. Countries have defined immigration laws to restrict people to enter their land without proper documentation as illegal immigration social and time constraint issues is areas such as social welfare, health care , voting rights , economy and human rights. A person can be termed as illegal immigrant in a country if heshe is not a national of resident country and has entered into the country without any legal documents or residing with expired documents.
