I think Jay Gatsby was responsible for his own death. With every decision he made ended up being a consequence. Which is why his enemy ended up having someone kill him in the end.
He is the blame for his own downfall in society. These situations in the story would not happen in today’s society.
One of decisions he made, which happens to be the reason he was killed, is when he went after Daisy (Fitzgerald

Jay Gatsby is a cryptoquote within himself. Who is this man? Gatsby is not only one man, but two. But just how exactly did James turn into Jay; how did one man go from one financial extreme to another? Gatsby is an interesting character, yet many fail to notice. ...but it seems like Gatsby has assumed the fault of Tom. George not only believes Jay ran over his wife, but also kills Gatsby thinking that Gatsby had an affair with Myrtle. So, it is justiciable to blame Tom for his irresponsibility for Gatsby’s death.
Jay Gatsby is a main character of the story as you may have already guessed due to the title of this book.
One of the traits of Gatsby that makes him truly great is his remarkable capacity for hope. He has faith that what he desires will come to him if he works hard enough. He does not comprehend the cruelty and danger that is the rest of the world. Gatsby, while a man of questionable morals, is as wide-eyed and innocent as a small child in his views of the world. These ideals are evident in Nick’s narration and in the words spoken by the other characters, including Gatsby himself.
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby falls victim to death by a series of events he helped create all in favor of regaining the love of Daisy. Although Daisy became Mrs. Buchanan, it did not stop Gatsby from wanting to rekindle the past. Moving to West Egg was no coincidence, “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald, 1925, p. 89). Gatsby made it a sole purpose of building a life worthy of attracting Daisy. Brooks declared that an individual is causally responsible “if someone pushes me into you and you drop your phone, then I am causally responsible for dropping your phone” (2012, p. 17). According to Brooks description of punishment, Gatsby shares a causal responsibility for his own death.

Tom Buchannan is not fully responsible for Jay Gatsby’s death because others were also involved in the murder. Tom Buchannan played a part as well as his wife, George Wilson and Gatsby himself took part in it. The major role for this death was from Daisy. Daisy is the main killer of Myrtle, which led to Gatsby’s death. Daisy only cared about Gatsby’s money not Gatsby himself. Gatsby and Nick are from a working background but Daisy is not. Tom and Daisy didn’t care about if they hurt the felling of others they only cared for themselves. If daisy truly loved Gatsby she would have told Wilson that it was her not Gatsby who ran over Myrtle.
According to Aristotle, a tragic hero character can be defined as being of noble status, but not necessarily virtuous. There is some aspect of his personality that he has in great abundance, but it is this that becomes his tragic flaw and leads to his ultimate demise. However, his tragic ending should not simply sadden the reader, but teach him or her a life lesson. In The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby is the tragic hero who portrays the corruption of the American dream through his tragic flaw. His devastating death at the end of the novel portrays the dangers of centering one’s life on money and other materialistic things, and warns the reader not to follow his foolish steps.
In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby has had a lot of loss in his lifetime. He lost his family when he moved and changed his name. His friend Dan Cody, who died left $25,000 for Gatsby, but Dan Cody’s mistress wouldn’t let Gatsby have it. Also, when Gatsby went off to war he was with his true love, Daisey, when he came back she was married to Tom with a kid.

Jay Gatsby shows how untrustworthy he is, how he got his unexplained money, and how nobody truthfully cares about him in the novel. Jay Gatsby clearly doesn't deserve his title.
