In today 's generation, millions of television shows have been created to entertain the general public. Whether it be cartoons, dramas, comedies, chick flicks, or reality t.v., I guarantee there is a show that each person enjoys watching. One particular genre appears to be the most viewed from a television screen, which is reality television. It is evident that the general population enjoys watching lives unfold and the various interactions between characters in reality television. For example, in Keeping Up With The Kardashians, the main characters in the family, (Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, Kris, Bruce (Caitlyn), Kylie, and Kendall) all fight like cats and dogs and stay angry at each other over something incredibly minute. The extent to which this show is dramatized is …show more content…
In interviews taken with Taya Flores, she discovered that critics say "verbal and relational aggression in these shows have an effect on viewers." As she was interviewing, she asked questions pertaining to the actions found in viewers who watched more aggressive reality television shows. The people who do watch these types of shows tend to imitate the behavior shown on screen, thus becoming more "dysfunctional" and "hostile" (Flores 1). Another article reiterates the fact that reality television does have an impact on behavior. This article states that violence will eventually be accepted as normal behavior if the viewer watches enough of that show (Thomas 1). If this isn 't concerning enough to the general public, then nothing will be. Effects of imitating the way actors behave on screen could have chaotic and disastrous effects. Civilians may lash out for no reason and may bring unnecessary attention to themselves. This type of behavior would eventually take a toll on a community 's peacefulness and would eventually crumple to a dangerous
The shows portrays a melting pot of each character lives with money, sex, social media, and relationships unfiltered and toxic, yet irrelevant to the real –world. Another key point is the exploitation of the television world and the millions of viewers, that it’s okay sociably to exemplify deviant behaviors in real –life. Also, culturally and sociably, the reality show creates a bigger problem as the platform provided for the cast is characterized in a negative state. On the negative side, this creates the illusion to act in like manner, from the deviant behavior portrayed on
In the Time’s article, “Why Reality TV Is Good for Us,” author James Poniewozik discusses the rapid growth of reality television shows, as well as their recent popularity and success. According to Poniewozik, reality shows involve a huge chunk of the entertainment industry that succeeds because of their audiences’ astonishment and disgust regarding the exaggerated events that take place on the shows (Poniewozik)
Reality based television has a broad landscape ranging from competitive game-like shows to programs following the daily lives of a group of people. Every major network now has some form of reality programming because the genre’s shows are high in viewership and require low costs for production. The genre is appealing to viewers because it provides them with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which allows them to observe social behavior that helps them determine what is appropriate or not (Tyree, 2011, p. 397). Since the majority of modern reality stars start out as unknowns, frequent viewers of reality programming believed that fame is obtainable if they appear on a popular show (Mendible, 2004). According to Mendible’s evaluation of the genre in the article Humiliation, Subjectivity, and Reality TV, people enjoy reality programs beca...
The emergence and soon popularity of reality TV in some degree demonstrates the huge market of selling “real experience” through exposing “realities” of privacy, relationship between players, etc. (Deery 2004 in TV program area.). However, reality TV may not be intrinsically “real” though almost all involved players are unprofessional actors and programs are usually highly inscribed. Players are actually selected carefully (e.g. audition or interviews) and constrained by various signed agreements and all filmed scene sections are delicately edited with special purposes, making reality TV kind of erasing reality and fiction together (Bingchun & George (2003)).
Reality based television has a broad landscape ranging from competitive game-like shows to programs following the daily lives of a group of people. Every major network now has some form of reality programming because these programs are high in viewership and require low costs for production. The genre’s shows provide audiences with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which creates resonance among viewers because they feel like they can relate to the characters on screen (Hasinoff, 2008). Since the majority of modern reality stars start out as unknowns, frequent viewers of reality television have essentially bought into the belief that they too can achieve overnight fame by appearing on a popular show (Mendible, 2004). Powerful individuals and social institutions have a great deal of influence over what is seen on television. Those with the most money can purchase the most media exposure, dominate the advertising field, and maximize their competitive advantage. Politics are often perfect examples of how money, power, and respect can cause an unbiased in an election. As another example, reality TV illustrates how prestige and wealth often form the basis for the most intense competitions within a society. Nearly all reality television shows use some sort of conflict over resources to keep their ratings going through the roof. It looks as though people easily associate to the manufactured struggles because of the conflicts that exist daily in their own
Reality Television has changed television in a way that no one could have imagined. Being the one of the most talked about genre in history, it is seen by millions of viewers. It has more ratings than any other kind of show (Breyer 16). From its start, there have been many Reality Television shows. Shows like The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother, and Jersey Shore. All of these give off a negative portrayal of reality. While Americans watch these shows, it seems that the show is real life, but in reality, no pun intended, before the show is even filmed, it’s written, edited, and produced (Breyer 21). Writers humiliate and degrade people just for the plot of the show, making their private lives public (Breyer 16).
Reality television has become nearly unavoidable and American society is more affected by reality television than they realize. Society can be shaped from reality TV in many ways like the way people act, and also the way people can perceive a problem. I never really could have thought just some of the stuff we watch on television like Big Brother, could be impacting us in any way. I always thought the reason people said reality television is bad for us was because we would get addicted and not want to leave the couch. I started to research reality television by looking up what could be the potential impact and I was shocked by the results that were good and bad. Coming from the article by John Perritano he says “Many say reality TV has put
According to Medical Procedure News, reality television is contributing to cosmetic surgery procedures, with more than 9.2 million procedures performed as a result of people watching reality shows. Unlike the daily fictional television shows that fill one’s life, reality shows reflect the life one lives daily, thus having a greater impact on the viewer and popular culture as a whole. Reality programs reflection of society not only helps shape popular culture but reinforces traditional family values, morals, and beliefs. Bravo’s original reality television show, The Real Housewives of Orange County portrays such a message to the audience. The Real Housewives of Orange County sends a message to the popular culture audience to adhere to traditional gender roles by the themes of; work, money, and control within the program.
Reality TV has affected American society by encouraging violent behavior. Reality TV shows such as, “The Bad Girls Club”, or “Big Brother” promote violence, and are popular to many teens. These shows purposely choose individuals whom
In this day and age, there isn’t hardly a person who doesn’t watch some form of reality television. Whether it is an adrenaline pumping baking competition, a talent based show with singing and dancing, or the pure entertainment of a day in the life of celebrities most everyone watches some form of reality television. There seems to be a few different sides of reality TV that make it so entertaining for people to watch. There seems to be the shows that lure people in because of the motivational aspect, the drama, or the deep down genuine appearance. However, most people are oblivious to the fact that the screen they are watching isn’t usually what actually happens in real life. James Poniewozik explains the manipulation going on behind the camera
Profanity and violence are mostly what is involved in reality tv. One advantage of having regulations would be that it would limit violence that can be a bad influence on younger viewers. “After being read arguments on both sides of the issue nearly two-thirds of parents (63%) say they favor new regulations to limit the amount of sex and violence in TV shows during the early evening hours, when children are most likely to be watching (35% are opposed).” (Facts and TV Statistics 2). By watching this kind of program, it encourages people to do what they do because they think that since those people are getting attention by doing that, they will get it too. With that being said, Shannon Kelly writes, “Some worry that if young people look to reality stars as role models, they might imitate the violence committed by the stars.” (Reali...
A second reason for people’s love of reality television, is the fact that reality TV can stir the viewer’s emotions. “While some cheer for their favorite celebrity on Dancing with the Stars….” (Lehmann). “ Or cry with joy watching Say Yes to the Dress…” ( Lehmann). These are just two of many example quotes that show that people sometimes get very emotional by simply watching other people live out their lives so publicly. Many people id...
