85? How are you going to get into university with this grade? Most of us are going insane trying to pull it together each and every night, but that’s okay our grades are more important than our mental health anyways. As students we are expected to attend school, do homework, work, stay in shape, have a social life, help out at home and get 8+ hours of sleep. Our society needs a reality check because quite frankly 24 hours in a day is not enough. Teachers assign questions for say 1 to 5 and one thinks to themselves, “ Oh that’s not too bad” until they flip through the textbook only to find each sections goes from A-Z. Picture this a typical, hard-working student. Each day one receives multiple assignments to complete for homework. The student is involved in several extracurricular activities so they doesn’t have much extra time. After sport practice, they head home, bury their head in books, and begins to study. How can teachers expect us to do well on our tests when we are having mental break downs at home and have tears in each of our textbooks. Where we come to a point in our life realizing we will never make it and we are wasting our parents time. Every year, dozens of innocent teens and young adults are losing their lives to themselves over something that should prepare them for life. The suicide rate among young adults, ages 15 to 24 have tripled since the 1950s. You know, when I was a kid, I had many dreams about traveling and making it big; I still hope to live through them. Imagine all the innocent teenagers that never got to live their dreams because of their damaged mental health. How can anyone accept the thoughtless cruelty with these precious young lives being treated like they are replaceable? What if one of them knows the cure to cancer but didn’t know their
79% of American middle school and high school students take part regularly in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Many students participate in sports that can take up to 4 hours of their time, daily. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school students will be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste.
As time goes on, the law has put more emphasis on facility just like Bridgewater State Hospital in which many of the actions of the facility workers can face legal consequences such as facing prison time, fines, lawsuits, and etc. Society has a better understanding of why certain people act the way that they do and being more knowledgeable about psychology and mental diseases allows us to have a different approach when dealing with these topics or these individuals. Ultimately, what is at stake here is the fact that parents are making excuses for students who do not want to work hard in school or are not able to handle it, therefore, parents need to stop making excuses for adults and let them decide their paths in life. If parents stop excusing their kids, then teachers can continue the challenging work for student resilience to increase. Laurence Steinberg’s “What's Holding Back American Teenager” an article introduced on the eleventh of February two thousand fourteen to inform the reader that our education system is failing. Steinberg received his B.A. in Psychology from Vassar College and his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Cornell University. The education system is causing students to not value education and the positive aspects it brings along with it. Steinberg believes the point in time where students start to perform poorly in school, is high school, because he believes we are not challenging the students to want to thrive education. In Steinberg’s article he aims to convince the reader through Logos that America’s education system is failing for high school students and the solution to the problem is to challenge our students.
Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). Most high school students spend 2 hours of extra curricular activity each night thats not including homework so after those activities you have to come home and do homework and then you will not have a lot of time to sleep. Also most kids do not get a lot of time to spend with their parents during the weeknights. Somewhere in America a parent is asking their child what they learned at school today, the child will most likely say that they didn’t learn much. It is sad to say that with today’s education system, this is true. The K-12 school system has oppressed students far more than it has liberated them, and this must change if America wants to produce members of society that actually have something to contribute. Students graduate high school having learned how to play the “game” of school leaving them grossly unprepared for college. Can you picture the student voted “most likely to succeed” in your graduating class? This individual must have had everything going for them. They probably had good grades, popular, never in trouble, no health issues and socially and emotionally stable. However, twenty years later, after graduating college, a successful business owner, had a beautiful wife and three kids, he decides emotionally he is done and takes his own life. Mental health issues can manifest at anytime with varying degrees of significance on the emotional stability of a person. Factors such as socioeconomic status, biological and environmental issues all dictate mental health needs. Obviously, a variety of circumstances can evoke these mental health issues. Now imagine coping with these mental health issues and being expected to still be a normal student and conform to your peers around you. This is what we expect of our students dealing with a variety of mental health issues. The policies and procedures are established to meet the needs of all students. The mental health issues are recognized and evaluated based on the best placement for the student to receive an education. The public school system has the responsibility to provide a free and appropriate education. The school does the best they can to provide a whole school approach to deal with the increasing number of mental health concerns. However, the mental health concerns carry on beyond high school.
Most children attend school for about 6.5 hours per day. Some people argue that this is not enough time for children to master key concepts, while others say that children spend too much time in school and on homework, which leaves them little time for family or fun activities. “There are many benefits to year-round schooling—including consistency, less time spent relearning material, and the implications that year-round schooling has for closing the achievement gap” (Lynch, 2016, par. 1). The adage of the adage. Currently, more than 700 schools have extended their day.
Students are bombarded with hours of homework every night and it interferes with their lives. They are tired of staying up late at night to finish their homework or a paper that is due the next day. They should not have this workload that they have every night because they also have to live their childhood. Life is too short to be staying up until 11:00 because of schoolwork. Homework is unhealthy for students and it is not academically beneficial for them.
Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. With no consequences to these actions students will almost always take the easy way out when it comes to homework
Many students wake up before the sunrises to begin their commute to school, and then spend several hours sitting in class listening to instructions and then return home where hours of homework are waiting to be completed, such as; writing, reading, studying, and many other assignments. The evening often seems like it doesn’t contain enough hours to complete the tasks at hand, leaving students overwhelmed. Gaining a high school education paired with the drive to excel creates enough anxiety, especially when not given the necessary time needed to complete assignments, and this doesn’t even consider the experience of students under additional stressors such as taking higher level classes, playing sports, having jobs or home responsibilities.
Being constantly burdened to always do what someone else expects cause teens to face depression. It’s not possible for everyone's child to be in the top ten percent and when parents replicate their own interest, values and even professions in their children they are doing nothing but getting in the way of their own children's success (Levine). Parents can’t always expect their children to do things the way they want them to. Taking exams is stressful enough already and being worried about getting the grade your parents want just makes it worse. This causes students to have anxiety when taking tests, and when they don’t get the grade they had hoped that’s when the real problem starts.
I do not cause any problems with anyone in this class, I do not get in fights, I am very respectful to my classmates and have made some very close friendships in this class. Everyone in this class is very friendly and make this class very fun to be in. This is my favorite class to come to everyday. The third and final reason why I think I deserve a 90 is because I always put effort in all my work and always try my hardest.
