Realism is the creation of the effect of that which represents the historical concrete nature
of human life. It emerged as a result of the political and social changes as well as the scientific
and industrial advances of the late 19th
drawn from the context of their motivations, circumstances, environment, as well as cause and
effects. In simple, it is the representation of common life.
On the other hand, Naturalism can be defined as literature which attempts to use
scientific principles of objectivity and detachment to its study of human beings. It thus uses a
philosophical position in studying humans hence advocates for this study to be impartial and
devoid of character moralization. Characters are thus studied in relation to their surrounding how
they relate to it.
Analysis of Characters and Scenes in James’s Washington Square
Realists are generally believers in pragmatism, that is, they seek to find and express
pluralistic truth, associated with discernible consequences and verifiable by experience. They
are also firm believers in democracy, and the materials they expect to describe are the common,

the average, the everyday. Realist believe that since there is no plot or symmetry in life, works
of fiction should also reflect life’s truths by avoiding the same and thus value individuals very
highly and to praise characterization as the center of the novel. That said a good example of

Bret Harte's "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" is an excellent example of realism. Harte uses realistic characters that use everyday language with a hint of local color from California, which is where the story is set. The characters are put through real situations and faced with troubles that we go through day to day. Bret Harte lived through the California gold rush and was able to create a very realistic setting and characters. Since he actually experienced the culture and people of this time the words create a very detailed picture, and the characters come to life in your
All the characters are products of their own society, Veronese society. Status is everything, money buys anything. Woman must marry well and produce many offspring. Men believe strongly in defending their honor by any means available especially violence.

Realism, in philosophical terms, refers to the concept that there is a reality beyond our perception. This means that how we see things and what we believe about them has no impact on the nature of said things. For example an individual may see an object as blue and another see the same object to be red, this is merely a disagreement between both parties about how they should label the colour. This wouldn’t mean that both parties are discussing different objects, this shows that no matter what individual’s beliefs or thoughts on the real world are only ever approximations and do not accurately capture reality. (O’Brien, M and Yar, M, 2008)
Realism claims that what we can review about our surrounding is established in the fact that they absolutely exist. What we believe about gathered information is what we think about the actual world. It states that there is an actual world that assimilates directly with what we think about it.
Realism is a literary movement that attempts to describe life without romanticism or idealistic prejudgment (writershistory.com). Although realism cannot be precisely timed or limited to any period, it is most often associated with a movement in 19th-century. Henry James and Kate Chopin are regarded as two of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. James contributed knowingly realism, particularly in his persistence that writers will be allowed freedom of independence in presenting their judgment of the world. Kate Chopin participated in realism movement by placing awareness and importance on women's lives and their repeated fights to create a self-image of their own within the Southern culture of the late nineteenth century. The views of American society to race and gender in the works Desiree's baby by Kate Chopin and Daisy Miller by Henry James can be easily distinguished from the 19th-century from today’s society.
Naturalism is about bringing humans into the “natural world”. We, as humans, are seen as aspects of nature collectively not separate like they once were. “Naturalism holds that everything we are and do is connected to the rest of the world and derived from conditions that precede us and surround us. Each of us is an unfolding natural process, and every aspect of that process is caused, and is a cause itself ” (“A Guide for Naturalism”). Humans are like “animals” they contain the same drives that animals have. They are just plain “natural”. Many authors express naturalism in their writings such as Kate Chopin. She expresses a naturalistic view on sexual drives which classify her as a naturalistic writer.
Realism is a style of writing which shows how things are in life. It showed how mostly every person thought life was just perfect. They were not seeing the
Important aspects of naturalism are the ideas that people are essentially animals responding to their basic urges without rational thought, and the insignificance of man to others and nature. In The Jungle, Sinclair portrays Jurgis as a man slowly changing into animal as well as a man whose actions are irrelevant to the rest of the corrupt capitalist world of Chicago in order to show the reader the naturalist ideas of the struggles between man and society.
To begin with, realism is an approach given by philosophers which suggest that we should deal with racism the way it is, allowing us to deal with any challenge from the fact that we acknowledge that there is a problem. It is the true description of the natural events without interfering with the available facts of the subject matter. Realism gives people the ability to accept what we see. If you see race then race is what you get. In fact, philosophers argue that racism will never end since we all belong to different races. The philosophy of realism calls for people to accept racism is what is in front of us thus we should not pretend that it does not exist. Through this approach, we are able to understand the root cause of racism and come up with a solution on how to deal with challenges brought by our different...

“In the place where idealism and realism meet, that is where there is the greatest evolutionary tension.” Idealism prioritizes ideals, social reforms and morals, by wanting to benefit not just yourself, but the world around you, believing people are generally good. On the contrary, realism gives priority to national interest and security with emphasis on promoting one’s own power and influence by assuming that people are egocentric by nature. Based on the definitions stated above, idealism and realism are significantly different from each other and their divergence of thought is more apparent when various proponents of each such as Woodrow Wilson, Henry Lodge, Barack Obama and George W. Bush have varied outlooks on comparable issues in politics. Subsequently, an idealist’s reaction to a particular issue would be a lot different than a realist’s response. Therefore, idealism deals with normative ideas and allows for improvements in the progress of not only a single state, but the whole world, however realism solely focuses on the benefits of one’s own nation.

The age of Realism brought together intellectuals such as the father of modern short stories, Henrik Ibsen, and famous musicians such as Scott Joplin. This exact movement communicated an abandonment from the influences of both the intellectual and romantic movements that came before it in America. Some of the most recognized works of American music and literature were produced outside of the period of Realism.
Firstly, classical realism emerged out of the destruction of the First World War. Hans Morgenthau popularized the school and laid down its fundamental principles. He believed that human nature is unchanging and based on universal laws cultivate within us a desire to dominate others. From
