Section I: Introduction and Context: Has the United States government kept secrets from its citizens? Conspiracy theories have been posed throughout the history of our nation. A conspiracy theory is defined as “a theory that explains an event as being the result of a plot by a covert group or organization; a belief that a particular unexplained event was caused by such a group” (Dictionary). Is this an on-going theme in U.S. Government history? Many people believe that our government has purposely fabricated or withheld information regarding historical events; was the moon landing simulated, were service men murdered at Pearl Harbor, who really shot President Kennedy? On the other hand, there are strong believers that the United States government has not and will not deceive its citizens. The novel Real Enemies by Kathryn S. Olmsted enlightens readers regarding major U.S. political and historical events. Section II: Author’s Background: Kathryn S. Olmsted, author of the book, Real Enemies, is an accomplished historian. Olmsted currently is head of the history department at UC Davis. She has been teaching at UC Davis since 2003, and a lecturer at UC Davis from 1993-2001 (Department of History). Kathryn S. Olmsted also has a wide background of educational studies; a Bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University, Master’s degree in history from UC Davis, and she received her Ph.D. in history from UC Davis (Department of History). Olmsted has written several articles for many well-respected publications; the topics have consistently been the history of the United States and its government’s secrets (Department of History). Real Enemies is her third book discussing conspiracies in U.S. history. This statement agrees with David Jackson’s quote stating, once an idea is formed and presented, the idea sticks to the minds of those believing it, and is hard to change. Section V: Conclusion: Olmsted presented research that gives the reader a new view of history. Real Enemies is a compelling book that answers a question; how far will our government, a political party, politician, or influential person go to carry out their agenda? This accomplished historian sheds light on this dark topic in our country’s political history. Olmsted reviewed events from World War I to 9/11 with examples and facts from well-known and reliable sources. She presented an argument showing how real evidence has influenced conspiracy thoughts over the years.
