Real Crime: The Almost Perfect Murder
Could you imagine going to your fishing job, throwing out the net for an hour, pulling the net in, and finding a dead body? Yikes. On July 28, 1996 men on a fishing boat in England did just that. The male dead body had nothing in his pockets. He had an unidentifiable tattoo on the back of his hand and a Rolex watch on his wrist. The man had several injuries that included a deep gash on the back of his head. The police thought that it could have happened from when the man was pulled out of the water. The Rolex was a big help to find out who the man was. It was traced to a man named Ronald Joseph Platt. The police had assumed that the man had fallen overboard and had drowned (Real Crime).
The case was almost closed until the police could not get ahold of David Davis who had initially helped identify Ron Platt. The police then sent an officer to David’s house. The officer had gone to the wrong house by mistake and found out that David was posing as his friend Ron. David then

became questionable and the officer had gone back to the neighbor’s house to get more information on him. The officer was told that David had a boat but he did not get the name (Real Crime). The fisherman of the boat that found Ron had told the police that there was an anchor in the net but it was no longer in his possession. The police tracked down the anchor and luckily found the piece of evidence. Ron’s ex, Elaine Boyce, helped the police with more of Ron’s history and David’s connection. David first met Elaine and offered her a job and then met Ron. David made Elaine and Ron directors in his new business because he did not want his name on any of the paperwork. She did her job and never questioned David because she had believed him and trusted him (Real Crime). David had everyone fooled by how friendly and caring he was. He bought Elaine and Ron two tickets to Canada. David told them to make rubber stamps of their signature so that he could sign business documents while they were in Canada. Elaine and Ron were struggling in Canada and so they decided to come back. David was not happy. He tried to persuade them to go back. David then left and called himself Ron (Real Crime). David was in contact with Elaine and had failed to mention Ron’s death.
Elaine contacted the police and the police then worked on arresting David. They sat in front of his house and then followed him when he entered a taxi. The taxi was pulled over. When he was searched at the jail he had two IDs. One of the IDs was David Davis and the other Ronald Platt. It turns out David was an international criminal on the most wanted list. The police went to arrest his “wife”, she packed a bag for their baby which turned out to have two bars of gold on the bottom. The house was searched and the police gathered anything that was suspicious or could be helpful. They found a picture of the boat “Lady Jane”. They then found the boat and took it to their lab. They found Ron’s blood. The anchor that was found was unfit for the boat. They then linked the anchor to the injuries on Ron’s body and that the anchor was attached to his belt and then he was thrown over (Real
Crime). The police found out that David Davis real name was Albert Johnson Walker. Albert was kicked out of his house, forcefully tried to break in and then went to jail. After he was released, he disappeared from Canada with 3.2 million dollars (stolen from his investment clients) and his daughter. They moved around England and posed as husband and wife and had two kids. Albert went on trial in 1998. During the case the watch had given a window of time of death because it was waterproof and it would stop after around 48 hours of no motion. The boat computer also gave coordinates of where the boat had been. During the trial Albert’s daughter did confirm that he was on the boat. Albert was found guilty for Ron’s death. He was then sentenced to a life in prison (Real Crime). Crime Case Analysis While I was watching the videos I was thinking how crazy it was that the police was just going to assume that Ronald Pratt had just gone overboard and drowned. My criminal justice class has taught me that one should never just go in assuming what happened. What you see is not always just the case. One must think outside of the box (Hamas, 2015). It was also shocking to me that not all of the evidence was collected. The police had not found out about the anchor until later on in the investigation. The anchor was in the same net as the man’s dead body and so how was it missed? If the officer had not gone to the wrong house, Albert may have never been caught. It goes to show you just how important it is to go into a scene open minded and to be very, very thorough when collecting evidence.
Bill goes to trial for the death of Mary and they sentence him guilty. Mary’s mom cried after the verdict was announced. Ralph hears the news about Bill and he begins to break down and feels guilty, he keeps saying that he needs to see Jack. Ralph finally sees Jack and beats him up, which finally escalates till Mae to call the police. The drug raid was busted and all the people involved in the operation were arrested. Blanche tells the police what really happened, that Bill was framed by Ralph and it was all their faults. Bill got off of trail because there was new evidence that corroborated his innocence. Blanche then jumps out of the window right before she was going to either be prosecuted for accessory to murder or going to be used as a suspect against Ralph. Before she actually jumped she reminisced about how she affected and basically ruined Bill’s life since he cheated on her then got his girlfriend killed. Then Ralph is put through a mental institution because they believed he had to be crazy to act the way he did. Then the original guy at the beginning says his last few words about how marijuana could take over anyone’s
I can see where this could have the family thinking differently now that they know someone was outside that looked suspicious but the blood spatter on David’s clothes does in fact places him at the scene while Molly was being beat to death so I believe he did do the crime or was there watching her get murdered. So no matter what the family says David is right where he needs to be and that is behind bars with the other murderers and violent crime
Once they paid for the necessities they were back on the road. Bill realize he didn’t pay for the can of tuna and notice a sheriff car following them. The lights went off and the sheriff pulled them over. They were taking to the station for questioning of a murder. The whole time while being questioned, they both thought they were be accused of shoplifting. Once they realized what was happening, that’s when Bill’s cousin came to defend them.
Once in town, he headed directly to the Sheriff?s Office. When he got there he told the sheriff what happened, then they both, Ben and Madec went to the doctor. When they were in the doctor?s office, the doctor examined them both. When Ben went back to the sheriff?s, Madec went to the hospital, the sheriff arrested Ben. Ben told the truth about what happened, but they couldn?t understand what Madec did. They believed what Madec had said. When the trial came along, things were looking badly for Ben. Until the doctor stepped out. The doctor had found Ben?s slingshot, and said that he examined the dead guy, and found that the .358 bullet killed him. Ben was no longer arrested. They took him back to the sheriff?s office, where Ben didn?t report a crime of murder or aggravated assault, he reported an accident.
Mark worried about his cousin considering that her son and husband had abusive tendencies and contacted the authorities. Officers checked the house twice and both times a note was on the front door of the house claiming the family was away. The police returned a third day and forced their way in. The police found the bodies of Randy and Karen Ringquist frozen in the freezer Jeremy had purchased to hide the smell of decay. Mark told the paper; “Karen and her husband didn’t get along. He was abusive to her. And then their son moved in and he was also abusive. He’s a 300 pound kid.” He continued with; “Her life was miserable and I tried to tell her to get out. The discovery of this crime began as a fishing trip for Chris Henkle, Dee Connors and his two children Sam and Claire on May 5, 2004. While relocating the boat to find better fishing, Connor spotted a suitcase floating in the water. As young Sam opened the suitcase hoping it contained pirate’s treasure, he found its contents to be wrapped in black plastic trash bags. Upon opening the trash bags, Sam exposed two human legs. Shocked at what they had found, Henkle immediately contacted the police. After Master Officer John Runge of Virginia Beach’s Marine Patrol Unit took possession of the suitcase from Henkle and Connors, he looked inside and called his superior asking for a homicide detective. Virginia Beach Homicide Detective Janine Hall joined by senior technician of the Forensics Unit, Steve Stockman, and Dr. Turner Gray, Virginia Beach Medical Examiner, arrived at the scene. The suitcase was photographed, then the body parts were taken back to Dr. Gray’s office for an autopsy. Detective Hall took the Kenneth Cole suitcase to the Virginia Beach police headquarters for forensic examination after the legs were removed for autopsy. Forensic unit supervisor Beth Dunton and Steve Stockman then tested the suitcase for trace evidence. To test for fingerprints, the bags were hung in a cyanoacrylate chamber in which fume...

Investigators decided they would focus their efforts on finding evidence that would point to Echols as a suspect so they could arrest him. They offered a reward for anyone who knew any information about Echols and the murders. A young man Aaron Hutcheson and his mother Vicki came forward and said Aaron may have been a witness to the crime. Aaron said he had seen the suspects at a playhouse near the location of where the boys bodies were found. They took Aaron to the crime scene and they appeared to be no playhouse found there. But due to his prior record with the accusations of two prior rapes, Ron was asked if he knew Debbie Carter. He was shown a picture of her and was willing to provide hair and fingerprint samples to the police. He was also asked later during the investigation to submit a saliva sample, of which he provided to the police, along with Dennis, who also submitted fingerprints and hair samples. Ron willingly took a polygraph test to attempt to prove his innocence, of which came back inconclusive. Being said, the OSBI completed the fingerprint analysis of both men and Debbie Carter, conclusively stating that the fingerprints did not match anything at the sight of the murder. Concluding the forensic evaluation, this should have proven innocence for both men, but Ron was seen as the primary suspect for the crime due to his prior engagements with the law and his proximity to Debbie Carter’s house. However, the police never once checked in with the witnesses they interviewed and referenced stories. Glen Gore was asked to make a statement to the police, where he denied any involvement with the Debbie Carter murder. Being said, he did mention that he had seen Debbie at the Coach-light just hours before she was killed. She had been uncomfortable on the dance floor and had asked Glen to dance with her to avoid Ron. Nonetheless, no one else had mentioned that they had seen Ron at
Sentence was passed and in that moment my whole life completely changed. In the background, you could hear the people chant, “Justice has finally been served!” They don’t know me I thought. Everybody makes mistakes, right? But, where was my second chance in life. My luck, the death penalty became legal again and eagerly waiting for me to become its newest member. My palms grew sweaty as always when I grew nervous and scared. There was nothing I could do. These people wanted me to pay for what I put them through.
Michael Sanders, a Professor at Harvard University, gave a lecture titled “Justice: What’s The Right Thing To Do? The Moral Side of Murder” to nearly a thousand student’s in attendance. The lecture touched on two contrasting philosophies of morality. The first philosophy of morality discussed in the lecture is called Consequentialism. This is the view that "the consequences of one 's conduct are the ultimate basis for any judgment about the rightness or wrongness of that conduct.” (Consequentialism) This type of moral thinking became known as utilitarianism and was formulated by Jeremy Bentham who basically argues that the most moral thing to do is to bring the greatest amount of happiness to the greatest number of people possible.
