Introduction It can be assumed that every parent knows reading to their child is important. Most pediatricians suggest reading early in a child’s life. In a more technological world, children aren’t being read to anymore. For parents, it’s important to know exactly why childhood reading is important because it might determine their child’s future.

My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.

My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. I did not know it when I would spend hours in the pool reading a book that my parents weren’t encouraging it in vain, but my family life, for good reason, was centered on books. While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
Children who are read to early age by their parent or at daycares do have advantages over other children at school who were not read to at an early age because of various reasons. Reading to kids at an early age improves their attention span. They are used to sitting down to listen to stories being read to them and they grow the story gets longer and they are more engaged and listen longer. This set of kids transition to class easily and are willing to sit down and listen to what their teacher have to say. Children who are read to at an early age try to copy what they are seeing and they want to learn to read themselves even if they start with pretend reading.
As a child living in the middle-of-nowhere finding a friend was difficult. Books were a great helper in my life, they sparked my imagination and helped me to become more social. It was because of books that I have some of the best friends in my life. There were kids that lived up the road, but none of them ever stayed long in the neighborhood. Despite that, there were two constants in my life; books and my mom. I often couldn’t find one without discovering the other. Although she would work late trying to support our family, she would still find the willpower to stay up to read a bedtime story with me. She sparked in me a passion for reading, because when I’m reading I’m never alone.
Finally, parents are encouraged to read with their children at home which not only promotes literacy development with the children getting the adequate encouragement and support they need to read and learn from their parents, but also help in the children’s social and emotional development and achieve “more resilience to stress, greater life satisfaction, greater self-direction and self-control, greater social adjustment, greater mental health, more supportive relationships, greater social competence, more positive peer relations, more tolerance, more successful marriages, and fewer delinquent behaviors” (Desforges and Abouchaar, 2003).
Due to an increase of children mot reading printed material, the author by the name of Anne Murphy Paul writes this article for parents and educators to read. She intends to emphasize the importance of deep reading. The author tries to accomplish this by citing sources talking about the benefits of deep reading, comparing the experience of deep reading to reading on the internet, and citing facts that makes reading online less valuable.
Reading to children can teach them skills they’ll need throughout their entire life. Reading aloud not only enhances their skills, it also affects how the their school life is. Being read to regularly is important to maintain the skills that the child learns, the earlier a child is being read to, the more skills they acquire. Parents will benefit from reading also, it creates a bond with their child that last a lifetime. Reading aloud will introduce children to books and reading so they can eventually do it on their own. Reading to children can improve many aspects of their life.
Reading has been a part of my life from the second I was born. All throughout my childhood, my parents read to me, and I loved it. I grew up going to the library and being read to constantly. Especially in the years before Kindergarten, reading was my favorite thing to do. I grew up loving fairy tales and thriving on the knowledge that I could have any book I wanted, to be read to me that night. Having no siblings, my only examples were my parents, and they read constantly. Without a family that supported my love of reading throughout my childhood, I wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as I have and do now.

It is the same bond that I want my children and grandchildren to feel as well as experience and perhaps pass on throughout generations to come. Reading to a child is one of the most fundamental skills that a parent or loved one can offer a child. It can help to expand a child’s mind and give children the drive to want to read. However, the values of today’s youths are often lost because of the lack of quality time that a parent spends with their children. Reading is one of the most incomparable ways to bond and spend that quality time with them. Our ambitions as parents should be to structure our children to become confident and goal-orientated citizens. That is what I have experienced as a result of my grandmother reading to me as I grew up.
