“In a village of La Mancha the name of which I have no desire to recall” is the starting phrase of the worldwide distinguished and praised novel “Don Quixote” that is in fact, the second best-selling book around the world after the Bible. The author of this novel, Miguel De Cervantes was a Spanish soldier, novelist, and poet born in 1547 in Alcala de Henares, a small town near Madrid. He wrote the first part of “Don Quixote de la Mancha” in 1605, and 10 years later the second part, in 1615. This novel has always been considered not only the birthplace of Spanish literature, but in fact, of literature in Spanish (as a language,) and admired by important writers around the world for the significant morals behind his metaphors. De Cervantes was eager to express his thoughts about contemporary literature written about the Middle Ages. Therefore, he did so by condemning the leading character of his book “Don Quixote” to lose his sanity after reading such books, imagining that only the content of the literature he read was not only his, but everybody’s reality. As De Cervantes states [Don Quixote felt those books] “were more real to him than anything else in the world” (392). Accordingly, he felt the need to fight against everything he would not recognize, such as windmills thinking they were giants, or flocks of sheep thinking they were armies that fought against him. He also believed that Dulcinea was a lady for whom he must earn his love, however, she was just a peasant named Aldonza Lorenzo. Each of these are examples to illustrate how distorted his mind stood after reading various 16th and 17th century books focused on knights, castles, princesses, etc. De Cervantes used his main character to show that such books were not educational, but rather they distorted one’s mind, as happened to Don Quixote that would distort the reality. According to Liu and Xin, both lecturers of the Department of English Language and Literature in China, “By making the image of Don Quixote, the novel adopts parody and irony to satirize the popular knight novel at that time in Spain” (669). Furthermore, Quixote’s imagination caused a great number of problems during his adventures with Sancho Panza, to the point that people mocked him and accused him of being crazy since he altered his entire life to be alike those tales, confusing ordinary dwellings with castles and maids with princesses. The author of the book showed that by reading these books one would lose his mind, and therefore the imagination would grow resulting in the misrepresentation of everything. As a matter of fact, Don Quixote’s imagination resulted in tremendous experiences and adventures,
The fables “El Grillo y el Jaguar” and “The Hero in the Village” both contain similar messages of cleverness and justice. The former is a Mexican fable about an unkind jaguar who challenges a singing cricket to a race. On the other hand, the latter Bolivian fable is about a hard-working burro who is blamed for eating his master’s garden every night, but the true culprit is a group of sly foxes. Both the cricket and the burro cleverly defeat their antagonists, however. While each encloses differences, also, these fables have many resemblances in characters and themes.

In the story of Don Quixote, a middle aged “gaunt” man sets off to become a knight-errant. Within the beginning chapters of the story, Quixote goes on a journey to prove himself as a knight. The narrator speaks sarcastically about Quixote’s and his adventures. On account of the voice of the narrator, perception is crucial relative to forming an opinion about Don Quixote and his journey of becoming a knight-errant. The constant opposition of the narrator in relation to Quixote’s goals and actions create a feeling of tension within the audience as the reader becomes perplexed in trying to figure out if Quixote’s journey can really be considered a knight’s errant. Throughout his novel, Don Quixote, Miguel Cervantes effectively uses the transformation of reality to critique and reflect societal and literary norms. In three distinct scenes, Don Quixote or his partner, Sancho, transform reality. Often they are met with other’s discontent. It is through the innkeeper scene, the windmill scene, the Benedictine friar scene, and Quixote’s deathbed scene that Cervantes contemplates revolutionary philosophies and literary techniques. The theme of reality transformation does not even stop there. Sometimes the transformations of reality scenes act as mimetic devices. Ultimately, Miguel Cervantes’ use of transformative scenes acts as a creative backdrop for deeper observations and critiques on seventeenth-century Spanish society.
Gabriel García Márquez story, Big Mama's Funeral, is a story filled with fantastical scenes and events much in line with Don Quixote and Candide. The introductory paragraphs of Big Mama's Funeral and Candide sound so similar in voice the two authors could be mistaken for the same. In Candide, one finds a series of episodes that are so far from the truth and yet perfectly explainable. The story of the fate of Dr. Pangloss, the death and resurrection of Cunegund and of her Jesuit brother, and the story of the old woman with one buttock are farcical in the same way as the episodes in Big Mama's Funeral. In Don Quixote, we find a man, for the most part average, who wishes to become a knight-errant. In his quest is as series of happenings so ridiculous they are nothing short of tabloid-style sensationalism, or drug induced hallucinations.
Don Quixote is a classic novel although now a days many may not be entirely familiar with it. The story of Don Quixote is filled with legendary actions that have survived our native tough. The phrase and labels that tell the title come from someone deeply impractical. Don Quixote at the age of fifty has not quite had what one would call a wild life, so far. He has never been married and still lives at home. He has however found his calling in life, the profession of knighthood: "he was spurred on by the conviction that the world needed his immediate presence..." (Book 1, Part 2). So the tales begin.
Miguel de Cervantes' greatest literary work, Don Quixote, maintains an enduring, if somewhat stereotypical image in the popular culture: the tale of the obsessed knight and his clownish squire who embark on a faith-driven, adventure-seeking quest. However, although this simple premise has survived since the novel's inception, and spawned such universally known concepts or images as quixotic idealism and charging headlong at a group of "giants" which are actually windmills, Cervantes' motivation for writing Don Quixote remains an untold story. Looking at late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Spain from the viewpoint of a Renaissance man, Cervantes came to dislike many aspects of the age in which he lived, and decided to satirize what he saw as its failings; however, throughout the writing of what would become his most famous work, Cervantes was torn by a philosophical conflict which pervaded the Renaissance and its intellectuals--the clash of faith and reason.
Don Quixote is one of the oldest forms of the modern novel. Written in the early 17th century it follows the adventures of Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho Panza. In Don Quixote, Cervantes satirizes the idea of a hero. Don Quixote sees himself as a noble knight among the ignorant common folk, but everyone else sees him as a bumbling idiot who has gone mad. Therefore, the novel’s longevity in the western canon is due to the humorous power struggle and the quest of a hero Don Quixote faces throughout the story.
