Recommended: The importance of teaching writing
Throughout my school experience, reading and writing have been always a struggle for me. I did not like to read because I could not remember anything I read, and I did not like to write because what I wrote was unorganized. Reading also can help improve writing, but when I was younger, I was stubborn and not aware of that. I had no confidence and thought I was never going to achieve good grades in an English class. So I let my grades slip and with that I decided to not go to college after high school. A few years out of high school, I took courses and a course English to develop my skills as a writer. In the course, I learned a great deal and realized, finally, that it was my low confidence level that was affecting me negatively. Then, starting …show more content…
Writing essays was not my forte, or so I thought. While working through the eLearning Module 5, which was titled, Visual Organizers, Outlining, and Drafting. These words meant nothing to me when I first entered the module because I thought that for some people it is not necessary to use visual organizers or outlines. I was exceptionally wrong about that. What surprised me was that the visual organizers and outlines, part of the prewriting step, taught in the eLearning module were very easy and I was able to write down many ideas to start my essay. It made the essay writing much easier, less stressful, and faster. I wrote my persuasive essay about the importance of sex education in schools and stated that schools are not teaching students enough about sex in the United States and that this country has the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in the world. With the help of my instructor, the comments on my first draft assisted me in editing, once more, to help me turn the essay into a more persuading essay. I feel I made a robust argument on the subject and tore down the counter arguments regarding the
Throughout my years in high school I have never been the best at writing. I have struggled and failed numerous times and I just didn 't think I would ever get any better when it came down to writing in my English classes. I always had to ask my parents to help me comprehend words, phrases and also how to pronounce certain words. For example my junior year of high school it was time to prepare ourselves for the SAT and ACT testing which are standardized tests that every student must take if they want to further their education in college. When I took the test for the first time I felt like I failed miserable because my score was so low. I received a 14 my very first time taking the ACT, and my lowest score was in reading. I was so embarrassed
I found that learning by example helped my writing greatly. One of the books we read, “The Sixth Extinction” by Elizabeth Kolbert, influenced my writing. The book is well written in an academic style that engages the reader. Her writing also flows nicely throughout every passage. I tried to
I have studied English since I was a grade seven, but the curriculum in my middle school and high school years, mainly focuses on reading and speaking components of language skills, with a little focus on writing. As a result, I never felt confident with any piece that I was asked to write. Writing has been a hurdle for me to succeed in college since most of the courses in college requires one or the other way writing skill. Consequently, I have decided to work on my writing skills, and have started working on it; even before, I started taking this English 101 class. I used to use a various educational material which I thought might help me to meet my writing goal. Some of the materials which I was using includes: TOEFL educational materials, You Tube resources, and various novels. All of these resources have helped me to polish my writing skills. Furthermore, after I started taking this class, I have learned to enjoy writing. I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. This class builds up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
When I read “Proficiency” by Shannon Nichols I really felt for her. I understood and resonated with her story perfectly, especially when she stated “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about.” (83). After I failed my writing assignment I was so embarrassed and didn’t want to write again but obviously, I had to. I always doubt the things I am going to say or which order I am going to organize the essay in. I try so hard to make sure all my sentences are cohesive and all my ideas connect to each other and the main concept but sometimes it just seems that when I keep messing with one little sentence or paragraph I just makes things worse.
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
I have never liked writing; I always thought it was a waste of time. It was a great therapy but I never found academic writing to be useful just tedious. Only ever writing when I had too made it harder for my writing skills to grow or improve in any way. I have not taken an English class since the 10th grade, even then I never gave it much effort, just doing what I had to so I could pass the class. Then I jump in to College English 1010, I feel like I do well in all other subjects but this one. English is my worst nightmare.
Moving to middle school was a big step and responsibility. Going from reading chapter books to nonfiction stories or even school textbooks for research papers changed my life. In 6th grade I was a decent writer, but still not the best that I could be. Anytime that I wasn’t doing homework for other classes, I was trying to get better at writing. I wrote stories in my journal at home and showed my parents ask what they thought. They both said that they were great stories, but that I could improve on my vocabulary and sentence structure. With my parents giving me advice I changed the words to be more complex, and it helped my writing improved extremely.
I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. Heidi Estrem says, “...writers use writing to generate knowledge that they didn’t have before.” (Writing is a Knowledge-Making Activity 18). I believe my ability to write without an exact destination
Literacy, the ability to read and write, also arguably one of the most important skills to have. Reading and writing, also one of my least favorite topics I have had the pleasure of studying in my educational career. Starting young, just entering grade school, it was sheer enjoyment being read stories, one of my favorites, Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson, entering worlds of excitement with pirates and adventure, and drifting off to sleep to the voice of my mother. When the tables turn, this began my life lived struggle. My mother could not read to me anymore, schooling took its course, I had to learn to read and write for myself. I was not the best reader or writer in school. A difficult set of teachers, throughout education, and
As I went through high school there were a number of individuals who often made remarks about how my brother is a better reader and writer than I am. There is no denying that my brother is in fact a good reader and writer. As a result my sophomore year of high school was the turning point for me in writing. I really enjoyed my English class and I really like my English teacher. Because of all of the remarks about how my brother was better than me I looked at it as motivation to do better and improve my skills and I developed the desire to achieve success in the class. I began to work exceedingly hard by spending countless hours studying and reading carefully over the assignments. My outpouring desire to do well continued up through my senior year of high school I discovered enjoyment in reading and writing again in my English classes and the teachers taught the classes in a way that I found very gratifying. For example senior year my teacher connected the Star Wars series with various literary concepts. By the conclusion of my senior year I was awarded by my English teachers the outstanding senior award in English. Although I still do not often read for enjoyment I do not look at reading and writing as such of a burden anymore. My attitude towards reading and writing has drastically changed a number of times throughout my
My reading and writing skills were still very poor when I left primary school, I had missed out on a lot of the foundations of these skills and they were never addressed again in my later schooling life. I used many shortcuts like audio books and abridged texts to lessen the amount of reading I was required to do during my time in high school. My reading abilities remained at the same level for many years and it took a wonderful author and a 28 hour flight to remedy this. My vocabulary and comprehension have improved immeasurably in the time since that day and now I love to read and do a lot of additional reading to develop my literacy further. Within the area of written literacy my main difficulties are with punctuation and grammar. It is only now in the past year I have taken the time and had the motivation to improve my writing. After completing a unit entitled Thinking and Writing at Univers...
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
There have not been many obstacles that have gotten in my way for me to be a successful reader. I am able to confidently read "Hope in the Unseen" because it keeps my interest. I like the story. I feel for Cedric. I imagine and picture the story in my mind. When a large amount of reading is assigned, sometimes my brain gets exhausted and I have to take a break. Literally my brain gets tired. The reason why I have trouble getting all of my assignments in for "Writing and Being" is because the book does not hold my interest. I find it boring at times. I really like "Higher Learning" because the stories are like short stories, and they are adventurous in a weird way.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
When I write a paper, I usually tend to write and edit at the same time. I could never continue writing without correcting my mistakes and making sure everything seems perfect. However, throughout this course, it made me realize that I should write everything on my mind, when writing a paper, just like I would in my notes. Later on, I should revise and edit my paper, making sure to cut back ideas and sentences that are off topic. Additionally, I’m the type of person that likes to write with no boundaries. Writing my research argument essay, made me realize that I could stick to a structure and yet bend the rules a little bit. When we started with this assignment, I was truly excited to research and write about a topic that I am passionate about. When we were asked to form an outline, I was bummed. I felt like I wasn’t able to form ideas or narrow down my topic, let alone write...
