As a young child it was very difficult for me, scenes both my parents only speak, write and read spanish. So I really never had anyone to help me and practice with me at home. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic novel written by Harper Lee. The novel is set in the depths of the Great Depression. A lawyer named Atticus Finch is called to defend a black man named Tom Robinson. The story is told from one of Atticus’s children, the mature Scout’s point of view. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, the Finch Family faces many struggles and difficulties. In To Kill a Mockingbird, theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based off an author’s opinion about a subject. The theme innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols.
The Testing, a story by Joelle Charbonneau, is a story about a group of friends who get tested by the government to test how they act and how smart they are.. The plot of this story starts when Malencia Vale graduates high school and gets picked to go to a series of tests created by her government to see if she is smart enough to go to their university, but when she finishes the first test she realizes there is more to it than just being smart it is also about how you act under pressure, then as she goes to the last trial to pass into the university she starts to understand the tests are actually about if you have the skills necessary to be a good leader and if you will do whatever it takes, the story ends when she passes the test and

English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
“Often fear of one evil leads us into a worse”(Despreaux). Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux is saying that fear consumes oneself and often times results in a worse fate. William Golding shares a similar viewpoint in his novel Lord of the Flies. A group of boys devastatingly land on a deserted island. Ralph and his friend Piggy form a group. Slowly, they become increasingly fearful. Then a boy named Jack rebels and forms his own tribe with a few boys such as Roger and Bill. Many things such as their environment, personalities and their own minds contribute to their change. Eventually, many of the boys revert to their inherently evil nature and become savage and only two boys remain civilized. The boys deal with many trials, including each other, and true colors show. In the end they are being rescued, but too much is lost. Their innocence is forever lost along with the lives Simon, a peaceful boy, and an intelligent boy, Piggy. Throughout the novel, Golding uses symbolism and characterization to show that savagery and evil are a direct effect of fear.
Throughout this semester, I was able to learn many writing skill and was able to develop as a writer. When I found out that I was scheduled to be in English Composition I, I was very nervous as I have always felt that writing was one of the skills that I needed to improve on. Although I usually received good grades on my essays, I did not like writing them since it would always take me more than five hours to write a one page essay. If I wanted a good grade in English Composition I, I knew that I was definitely going to have to improve on my grammars. The main skills that we learned in this class were writing a clear thesis statement, paragraph structures, and sensory details. Through this class, I was able to attain more knowledge in these areas and gain confidence in my writing skills. For as long as I can remember learning how to read and write was a real challenge for me. When I first arrived in the United States I was enrolled at the nearby elementary school. Being from another country I was scared and embarrassed because I was different then the other children in my class. Talking and communicating with others was something that wasn't in the interest of what I wanted to do. I sat far away from others depriving myself of what they were doing or learning. Coming from Mexico and going to a school where no other children would speak the same language that I would or even play the way I did made me believe that I was some sort of thing that didn't belong. All these contributed to a low esteemed child that was unable to communicate. The world I was in suddenly became a place that I didn't know. To the kids and others in my class I was an illiterate person.
While being enrolled in my English 112 DL07 composition class, I have faced some challenging situations. For instance, writing a rhetorical analysis is not as straightforward as one would imagine. There are several strategic techniques that need to be implied; there is also planning, note-taking, forethought, and prewriting. On the other hand, I overcame this tough situation by taking the appropriate amount of time to get my thoughts and ideas together to create a rough draft. I believe I do fully understand what is academically expected of me for this term. This may sound like sarcasm, but it is the truth, I enjoy writing, and analyzing essays. There will always be coflict in this world, the peace we ever acheive is only euphemeral. Humans are social organisms. They are able to communicate and process ideas to form the greater thought. Like, what is harmony? The key idea to realize is that it is attainable. However, on the flip side of such facade, there is discord and anarchy in the natural instincts of those individuals who only strive to survive. In the novel, "The Tortilla Curtain" by T.C Boyle, Cándido Rincon, the Mexican lead, is observed as unrighteously restricted by his drean if an easy life in America. However, his plan goes severely off-track. Boyle uses spiteful tones, serious irony, and delinquent symbolism to delineate Cándido as isolated by his promising but incompetent personality to render the American Dream as unattainable to Mexicans.
A reflective essay is a narrative form of essay. Such essay includes author’s personal experiences, memory, point of view and the reflection on the significance of those recalled memories. These are the main elements of reflective essay. Comley states, “your own experience and memory will be your primary source for reflective essay”. Parents fail to properly relay what it is they want for their kids, and children neglect to listen or explain their emotions to their parents. It’s simpler to continue to fight with each other than to properly take the time to resolve the root causes of the fighting. In the short story, Two Kinds by Amy Tan, the main character Jing-mei’s mother is dead set on her daughter becoming a prodigy, pushing and prodding her into doing things without thinking about what’s going through her daughter’s head. In retaliation to her mother’s action, Jing-mei stops trying or caring about any of her mother's attempts.
From what I have been taught, analyzing literature takes and depends on multiple factors. Since numerous components go into the process of analyzing one's work, the individual should expect the procedure to be complicated. Analyzing includes scanning the text and understanding what the author is trying to portray. The author, to complete his book or other literary folios, made individual choices and chose them for a reason. Literary analysis of his work would require for the reader to dive into his thoughts and decipher the significance of his decision.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
