Mel McGinnis of “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” seems like
that one guy that everyone seems to know. He stands out from others; he’s unique. You
either love him or hate him. Mel is very much like one of my good friends. They are
both very individualistic and hey are both annoying drunks. They are both interesting
characters though. I think the author Raymond Carver created the character Mel based
off someone he knew. Carver created Mel for one reason or another.
Mel is just like one of my good friends. One day I like him; the next day I hate
him. People like this tend to get annoying to others around them. They are very
argumentative. My friend will argue forever and Mel is the same way. Mel is touchy and
does not seem to take a joke well. Despite these characteristics that frustrate most
people; Mel stands out. He seems to be a leader.
Mel is very individualistic. He is a Cardiologist who is always busy. This job
creates for good stories. Mel is telling stories throughout this whole story. He will start
to tell a story, get sidetracked, argue all of his points, and then go on to the story again.
He is constantly talking. It seems like there would not be much of a conversation between
Mel, his wife Terri, Nick, and Nick’s wife Laura if it was not for Mel’s constant babbling.
He surely leads the group. The problem is that he never clearly express...
the very beginning. He struck me as the type that is your friend one minute and
about the people who got him here he loves his family and will never forget about them.

For instance, as Ann Weiss orders the cake for her son’s eighth birthday the unnamed baker is only willing to say the cake will be ready Monday morning, “No pleasantries, just this small exchange, the barest information, nothing that was not necessary” (Carver 48). Although the baker does not partake in the exchange of words between Ann and himself, he uses communication by listening and shows this in making the cake correctly. In some ways, this small exchange is vital to Ann because it is the last reassurance that everything will be okay. It also important to note that Carver does not give the baker a name, which in most cases is the first thing exchanged between a client and owner. Seeing that the baker uses a lack of communication with his customers explains the agitation Ann’s husband feels over the phone, “The husband held the receiver against his ear, trying to understand. He said ‘I don’t know anything about it.’ ‘Don’t hand me that,’ the voice said,” (49). Instead of communicating that the birthday cake for Scotty was not picked up, the baker assumes the husband knows about the spaceship cake and responds vaguely. From former interactions the reader knows the baker is not big on words, but after the husband repeatedly showed his confusion the baker failed to correctly inform him. Communication deals with both listening and speaking, when one end
Edger Allan Poe is one of the most influential authors of his time. Well known for his short story's The Raven and A Tell-Tale Heart, Poe also wrote poems that reflected his struggles through out his life. Poe was born in 1809, Thomas Jefferson was president. Lots of events occurred during Poe’s life with the beginning of the war of 1812, to the writing of “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, and “The Vampyre” written by John Polidori. Slavery was banned in England in 1833 and a year later, The Spanish Inquisition ends in 1834 .During Poe’s short life of forty years; writers such as James Fenimore Cooper, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Charles Dickens published works. There was an influx of great writers during his time. Worldly influences such as wars, lack of proper health for illness such as tuberculosis and the popularity of stories with horror and monsters most certainly influence how Poe wrote. The biggest influence on Poe’s writing was his personal life; gambling, drinking, loss of love, and lack of money, greatly influenced what he wrote.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy embeds issues throughout the novel such as the will to survive, the power of love, and the ability to trust in vital situations. In the novel, McCarthy illustrates a person has no physical or mental boundaries when protecting the one they love. The power of love and the extent to which one will do for love is prominent in creating the relationship between the father and the son. When entering certain conditions, the son had to be able to trust the father to do what was morally right. The strenuous situations McCarthy creates within the novel deepens my belief that the will to survive, love, and trust can and will overcome the struggles of life. The father is motivated by his need to protect his son from the dangers
Ever since we were little the ideal fairytale for women and men was imbedded in our head as little girls and boys. We were going to grow up, find our prince charming or princess, and live happily ever after. We would live in huge mansions, drive the best cars, and have butlers and maids serves us. That’s what Disney movies taught us, from the stories of Cinderella to Beauty in the Beast. It showed us that there would be some hardships, but in the end that would be our lives. As little boys and girls we did believe that and that no doubt this is how life would be until we grew up and find out that wasn’t the case.
I think Maniac Magee is respectful because he helps Amanda and Mrs.Beale when they have a problem and he does the chores without having to be asked and he didn't want to sleep in the bed because he was thinking about his mother and father. When Grayson dies later in the story Maniac doesn't have a place to stay so he goes back to the Beale's house.I think Maniac is respectful because he does his chores he walks the dog he stays really fit. He's very social and caring about others that is one of the reasons Maniac ran away from the Beales he thought he wasn't appreciated there. He didn't have anywhere to go so he went to the buffalo pen and that's where he fell and ment Grayson. When Amanda and Maniac ment it was like a weird thing because she was

Upon reading Erich Fromm’s The Art of Loving, I gained a better understanding of what love really is. Fromm’s book puts love into perspective. He begins with several facts with regards to the attitude in which people treat love. They are the problems of how to be loved, the object to love as well as the confusion between the initial experience of falling in love and the permanent state of being in love, which had a great impact on me, as far as thinking about what love is.
