Athletes in society are constantly in the media and are looked up to by the youth and fans alike. When athletes make bad decisions the issues are blown up for all to see. A role model is a person whose behavior can be emulated by others and especially younger people. Young kids look up to athletes more than anyone else and try to be just like them, wishing to follow in their footsteps when growing up. Not all athletes embrace being a role model in today’s society, even though the youth and many others follow their every move. Several professional athletes have gone from being role models to making bad decisions that often jeopardize their careers.
If you were to search through the media about athletes today, more than likely you will see Ray Rice pop up. Rice was a running back for the Baltimore Ravens and

looked up to as a role model in the NFL as a dominant rusher.
Rice puts his career in jeopardy when he assaulted his girlfriend in an elevator which was caught on camera and made public during the media coverage. These actions of domestic violence should not be committed by anyone, especially a role model who people look up to. Ray Rice was clearly in the wrong with his actions, but the NFL did not do a sufficient job in investigating and reporting it immediately following the allegations being made. Several inconsistencies appeared in the statements made by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about what Rice had told him and what Goodell told the public. The league initially gave Rice a two game suspension, but changed the punishment to an indefinite suspension when full video evidence of the incident was released. During a two day hearing for Rice’s appeal of the suspension commissioner Goodell put himself into
question by what looked like changing his story so that Rice would not look as guilty. After being released from the ravens and indefinitely suspended the NFL, they have lifted the suspension. Further reports in the media have released new evidence that Raven’s owner, Dick Cass, suggested to Rice to tell a soften version of the incident to commissioner Goodell. If these findings hold up, it could pull the Ravens into the mix due to the fact they helped a player understate the incident. If proved it would cause punishment to the organization as a whole. The actions taken by both Rice and Goodell were morally wrong and would not be seen in a role model. In the world of cycling, Lance Armstrong not too long ago one of the biggest role models for his actions away from the sport. After winning the Tour de Frances numerous times and battling testicular cancer, Armstrong created a motto for life with “live strong”. The motto was used as a campaign which its primary intentions were to support cancer research and work towards finding a cure. The nations population could not get enough of the signature yellow wrist bands with the “live strong” saying on it, which raised more money for cancer than was ever expected. Despite all of the charitable contributions, allegations of Lance Armstrong doping was mentioned every once in a while, but always shot down by Armstrong himself. In January 2013 things changed when the truth about Armstrong’s doping behaviors came about. The cyclist who had been a huge role model in society had been lying the whole time as he was found to be doping for many years. Not only was the role model aspect lost, but he also lost the $75 million in sponsorships that he had. The United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) investigated the allegations that continuously appeared against Lance Armstrong. The USADA found that not only was Armstrong definitely doping, but he was pressuring other teammates to follow along in the illegal acts. Armstrong continued to deny the acts until appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show where he admitted to using performance enhancing drugs. Armstrong was perceived almost as a national hero being promoted in many advertisements as well as movies, but this was when he was still recognized as a role model. In the time after the truth came about, the role model aspect was completely gone and so were the medals and records that had been set by Armstrong. Athletes come from many different types of backgrounds and cultures. When in the national spotlight as an athlete they are expected to act as role models and act appropriately representing their team and city they play for. Adrian Peterson grew up in the south where it was culturally acceptable at one time to use physical punishments for discipline purposes. Peterson was in no way acting like a role model when he physically assaulted his four year old son with a switch and was charged with reckless or negligent injury to a child on September 12, 2014. Peterson avoided jail time after reaching a plea agreement with a $4,000 fine along with eighty hours of community service. The actions taken by Peterson should in no way be viewed as something a role model would ever do. They have caused his reputation and career to be torn apart, going from one of the best running backs in the NFL to being looked down on. Peterson’s actions had a huge impact… Prior to the assault being publicized by the media many children and fans sported the number 28 Vikings jersey with pride and enthusiasm. The decision to uphold the suspension given by the league has left Peterson questioning his retirement and regretting his decisions. Although there are athletes who are not meant to be role models there are also many who pride themselves on being the best role models possible. Athletes like Kevin Durant are superb when it comes to helping out in the community or anywhere else. Derek Jeter can be looked at as one of the best role models in sports today. On and off the field Jeter has basically wrote the book on how to be a role model as an athlete. Jeter’s actions over the years have accumulated and were recognized when he retired in the most respectable fashion out doing Mariano Rivera’s farewell by the fans. With the amount of publicity and the number of kids as well as others who look up to professional athletes they should act like role models in society. Some athletes do live the lifestyle of a positive role model but the number of athletes who don’t outweigh them in the media and in the public eye. The lasting effect that bad decisions by athletes have stay in the public eye for a much longer than the positive efforts that are made. Being a role model should be part of the job description of a professional athlete in today’s society.
Ray Rice a former NFL running back who played for the Baltimore Ravens was caught brutally smacking his fiancee over, leaving her blacked out on the floor of a casino elevator taking place in Atlantic City. The footage leaked out world wide and the public created huge controversy over the coverage that continuously played a numerous of times on major news networks. Rice who was cut from the Ravens and suspended from the NFL after the release of the show down is now an unsigned free agent, searching for hope. Through shocking evidence and a glimpse into a professional football players life, I aim to examine how media created an entertainment brand out of the countless amount of times the video was aired, how the NFL handled the scandal, and how Rice strives to regain his identity.
Even though athletes get special treatment they never think about how them getting off easy can back fire. The Ray Rice case is a prime example of how it was a downfall in their career. Rice got released from the Baltimore ravens and since then he has not play football. The NFL suspended him indefinitely, but it was later lifted because he did not lie to the commissioner about the domestic violence case. He was free to play again, but no team signed him because it was going to come with a ton of backlash and no team wanted to deal with that because it would have been a distraction to the team. Also, many people lost respect for Rice for putting his hands on a women. No one would look at him the same anymore. He has yet to sign with any team since the incident took
Jerry Rice is one of the best NFL wide-receivers in history. Throughout his football career he broke many NFL records. He was always working out and said that he was never a couch potato. Jerry Rice’s life was influenced by his early life. His major accomplishments/contributions to American society including breaking almost all the NFL records helped him earn his place in history as an important African American.
Overcoming the past and extreme obstacles is nothing new to Ray Lewis. His past is filled with dark secrets that not just anyone could forget; therefore, he is my idol. Lewis’s legacy will be tainted by the events of January 31, 2000, for some. Early that morning in Atlanta, a brawl broke out, two were found dead, and Lewis, along with two others, was charged with murder the next day. Ray Lewis was charged for a murder in a bar. Ray Lewis was going through hard time during this innocent and his career. Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and Superior Court Judge Alice D. Bonner sentenced Lewis to 12 months' probation, the maximum sentence for a first-time o...
This research paper will determine whether professional athletes deserve a second chance to play in professional sports after inappropriate behaviors. Professional athletes are considered idols and are often held to higher standards. Society has become concerned with so many of today’s athletes making the evening news for their unsuitable behaviors.
Jackie Robinson was the first black baseball player to play on the professional level, he was fearless, courageous, willful and strong. He was an advocate for civil rights, as well as a great baseball player. He had to try to keep quiet, and keep to himself while playing, but became a stronger and more extreme advocate over time. A leader on and off the fields dealing with much more than just baseball, he also had to deal with the criticism and racial tensions of a prominently white game. Branch Rickey, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was a showman who knew how to make money and fame in baseball “he had made a fortune for the cardinals as well as himself, and black talent could argument his bottom line by transforming his struggling dodgers into a power house” (Zeiler, 17). He wanted to make his team great by any means possible. He put his eyes on Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson changed the game and the world, and will always be a huge figure in baseball and civil rights.
Athletes in times of difficulty can be important role models.” This shows that sports are in fact helpful because they can grow children into being important role models for the rest of society. Studies have shown time and time again that playing sports can be beneficial to children and we also believe this to be true. Many people still think that sports cause “too many injuries”, or coaches “are not fair enough”, but adolescents will experience these things all throughout their lives because injury can happen anywhere and they will not always be the best at what they are doing. Sports are beneficial to the youth because they can teach children and teens important life skills, help them maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle, all while improving their mental health.
Ray Rice was a NFL player who was seen on a video footage punching his fiancee, Janay Palmer, in the face and dragging her unconscious body out of the elevator. Rice was terminated by the Baltimore Ravens after the video was released to the public. He was arrested and indicted for third degree aggravated assault. Until this day no NFL teams are interested in allowing him on the team because of his domestic violence incident. Just as the Ray Rice, Martin was found guilty and charged with reckless endangerment. This domestic violence case prove the NCVS statistics correct because the demographics are similar: an African American woman, mid 30s, punched in the face by her fiancee. Also, it shows that this type of crime is relevant in the United States. Especially if it was ripped from the headlines and used in a popular crime television
A year and a half ago, Ray Rice was one of the top running backs in the National Football League. Rice had it all, money, fame, and a successful career in the pros, but who knew that Rice would be capable of such a terrible act of violence. Kids all over the country looked up to him for how he played the game and even how he acted. Rice made an impact in the lives of many young people due to his signature event, Ray Rice Day, where he gave hundreds of kids instruction and encouragement, and also fun by playing football.(Ray Rice Makes Impact in Youth Community,1). Adults looked up to Rice too, due to his multiple charities that he is very active in. Rice’s persona was great until February 15, 2014. On this date, Rice and his then fiancee, Janay Palmer, got into an altercation in an elevator in the early morning after a very long night of heavy drinking. Rice and Palmer got physical and Rice knocked her out, then continued to drag her out of the elevator. The police were called, and they were both arrested on the scene and taken to jail. Ray Rice tarnished his image after being such a respected person in the NFL community and all around the world. One camera
Although Rice, a highly acclaimed Illinois high school player, fell short of repeating his Junior year’s magical state championship run. He was still a first team all-stater, the runner up in the 2010 Mr. Basketball contest, the leading scorer in Centennial history, and a highly ranked recruit within the state.
Ray Allen considered by many by his teammates and coaches that he is a teammate that you would want on your team. Whenever it comes to clutch scoring, his three pointers, or just to have a teammate who always has your back and considers you a brother. Ray was also known to be a deadly, and a respectable player on the court while Reggie was a deadly, cocky, and a unsportsmanlike player. Although Reggie Miller and Ray Allen played in different eras, Ray still had the better career. Ray Allen was the better overall player because he had better stats, Ray hit an higher amount of important clutch shots and he had more of a impressive achievement resume.
On February 15th, 2014 Ray Rice and Janay Palmer got into a fight which they were then both arrested with simple assault (CNN, 2014). It was only four days later that TMZ released out the videos of what happened that evening. In the video clip it starts off by the two entering in to the elevator. After inside he strikes her repetitively where she then hits her head off the railing after such a traumatic blow to the head and drops to the ground where she is then knocked out. He is then seen to pick her up and drag her out of the elevator until hotel staff stumbles upon the scene. On July 24th, Rice receives a two game suspension for his actions. Only a two game suspension for beating his wife? People all across the world are stunned by the disciplinary action that is released after what was seen from the video. This showed people that obviously the law enforcement does not care about a man beating his wife even if he is a professional athlete, but because he was such a talented athlete it simply did not matter. The NFL did not want to believe what they had seen. Instead they wanted to set it aside and act as if it did not happen, but that was not about to happen. September 8th is a day that will forever be remembered by Ray Rice and his family. That is the day that his football
In a moral context, it is important to understand the extension of unethical conduct on the field to the inevitable corruption of personal life that becomes part of societal interaction. This type of behavior can extend to sexual misconduct (rape, marital infidelity, etc.), violence, and criminal activity. In modern sporting culture, the popularity and great success of athletes tends to tempt tem into thinking that the game they play is also being played in their personal lives. This form of public personae affects the way they view lawful conduct and morality as a means to achieve success in family life, personal choices, and the management of their daily activities off the field. The public image dictates the way they interact with other people outside of their professional careers. More so, the promotion of immoral and unethical behaviors in sporting institutions set another precedent in which athletes are encouraged to behave through a gamesmanship model. The enculturation of corrupt business practices tend to create a culture of winning as the primary goal of attaining greater wealth and financial prosperity over the sportsmanship qualities that can increase the ethical and moral culture of athletic performance. These moral aspects of off-field behavior define the underlying extension of gamesmanship as a part of immoral behavior by professional athletes:
Everyone is aware of the role that these athletes have to do. We should not look at the inappropriate actions of few athletes. The. I was biased to believing that all athletes are bad before I started. doing my research for this paper.
Athlets have been lookd up to as role models for as long as sports have exsted. There is just something attractive about the thought of being in good physical condition and being talented in sports. But, are athlets the kind of people that children should be looking up to for direction and guidance? Many children often look up to the professional athletes as role models. In fact, in 1995 Sports Illustrated for Kids did a survey for kids who were ages 7 through 12 about who their role model was. The majority of the kids answered that a professional athlete was who they most looked up to. Only four percent of the children answered that their role model was one of thir parents. Because of today?s media, athletes are constantly in the public eye. Everything they do on and off of the playing field. Some professional athletes speak a positive message through their fame by demonstrating constructive ideas such as teamwork and commitment while they are on the field. Even off of the playing field some athletes set a good example by visiting children in schools, going to hospitals, or even setting up foundations and organizations to help the ill and less fortunate people. However, other athletes are not as considerate to the fact that someone may be looking up to them, some athletes are not concerned about anything other than the sport they are getting paid to play and themselves. These athletes are the ones that propose questions over whether athletes should be considered role models or not. A role model can be defined as a person whose behavior, example or success is or can be emulated by others, especially young people. Who would want their child looking up to someone who has been convicted of domestic violence or has a drug addiction? It is an argument of opinion that cannot be settled.
