Ray Bradbury uses figurative language to develop from a naïve tone to a frantic tone to emphasize that technology, the devices that we rely on so much will end up destroying society and nature will not miss our absence. The house, the protagonist in this story symbolizes mankind. Bradbury describes the house having a self-protective and an alert personality when the bird, a symbol of nature, brushes against the houses window. The author writes… “If a sparrow brushed a window, the shade sapped up. The bird, startled, flew off! No, not even a bird must touch the house!” This house not letting anything in implies technologies ignorance to the outside world.
The title of the short story, “Four Directions” is symbolic for Waverly’s inner misconceptions. As she goes about her life, she is pulled in different ways by her past and her present. She is torn between her Chinese heritage and her American life. She never thought that instead of being pulled in four directions, she could take all of her differences and combine them. In the end she realizes this with the help of her mother. “The three of us, leaving our differences behind...moving West to reach East” (184), thought Waverly. Her whole life she misconceived her mother’s intentions. Lindo never wanted Waverly to solely focus on her Chinese heritage, but rather combine it with her new American ways. The idea of being pulled in four
Jimmy S.Baca use of metaphors, similes, imagery, diction, tone and mood are used in a very effective way in his essay Coming into Language. His use of metaphors and similes really give the reader a visual, helping develop imagery. Baca’s use of imagery paints pictures in the reader’s head but also develops a type of emotion by the use of diction. The word choice used provides the reader with an understanding of where the author is coming from leading us into tone and mood. The author’s tone starts off very low but by the end of the essay you will feel very satisfied.
Tatiana de Rosnay used different literary tools to assist her writing in order to deepen the story, including figurative language, dramatic irony, and foreshadowing. The use of figurative language helps to clarify a description in order to place an image in the mind of the reader. Similes are the main type of figurative language used throughout Sarah’s Key, allowing the reader to see what is happening. Many images conjured up make comparisons as a child would make them, as much of the story concerns the innocence of a child, such as “[t]he oversized radiators were black with dirt, as scaly as a reptile” (Rosnay 10) and “[t]he bathtub has claws” (Rosnay 11). Other descriptions compare Sarah, and Zoe, to a puppy, a symbol of innocence, as children are known to be
Ray Bradbury thinks the presence of technology creates lifestyle with too much stimulation that makes people do not want to think. Technology distract us from people living a life in nature. Clarisse describes to Montag of what her uncle said to her about his ol' days. " not front porches my uncle says. There used to be front porches. And people sat their sometimes at night, talking when they did want to talk and not talking when they didn't want to talk. Sometimes they just sat there and thought about things over." (Bradbury 63) Clarisse goes on to tell Montag that, "The archiets got rid of the front porches because they didn't look well. But my uncle says that was merely rationalization it; the real reason hidden underneath might be they didn't want people the wrong kind of social life. People talked too much. And they had time to think. So they ran off with porches." (Bradbury 63) this explain how in...
Margaret Laurence 's novel A Bird in the House is a collection of independent and intertwined short stories written from Vanessa MacLeod 's point of view. As an adult looking back on her childhood, the protagonist examines how she, and essentially everyone in her life, experiences a sense of entrapment and a need to escape. Because the author begins and concludes the novel with the Brick House, the major theme of escape is shown to have developed in Vanessa as she matures through childhood and adolescence and becomes an adult.

Many of Ray Bradbury’s works are satires on modern society from a traditional, humanistic viewpoint (Bernardo). Technology, as represented in his works, often displays human pride and foolishness (Wolfe). “In all of these stories, technology, backed up by philosophy and commercialism, tries to remove the inconveniences, difficulties, and challenges of being human and, in its effort to improve the human condition, impoverishes its spiritual condition” (Bernardo). Ray Bradbury’s use of technology is common in Fahrenheit 451, “The Veldt,” and The Martian Chronicles.
Ray Bradbury’s style of writing always included hidden meanings that present a central theme of the dangers of unchecked technology. Many factors in Ray Bradbury’s life had contributed to his style of writing and the themes that he wanted to present to society. Some factors that influenced Bradbury were events such as the Cold War and the writings of other writers such as Edgar Allen Poe. Bradbury’s style of writing was shaped by many factors in his life such as world events, his techniques learned from famous writers, and the progress of society. From life to death Bradbury’s world was always filled with war and government propaganda that attempted to sway the thoughts of citizens about the dangers of foreign threats (Schofelt, Cordon, “Science fiction writer Ray Bradbury: 1920-2012”). Bradbury’s writings were always influenced by the constant reminder of these governments ideology filling his ears. Bradbury’s writing was also influenced by the writings of other writers such as Edgar Allen Poe. His inspiration as a child began with Poe and was forever changed by his style of gothic writing and the morals that Poe always presented to his readers ("Planetary Pariahs: Bradbury and the Influence of Edgar Allan Poe."). Bradbury’s best known works were considered science fiction and always presented a story of the dangers of unchecked technology (Mataconis "Ray Bradbury And The Real Lesson Of Fahrenheit 451."). All these factor into how Bradbury would style his writing and the major themes he presents to his readers.
Everyone in life has something that they long for. All Summer In a Day, by Ray Bradbury shows this through the children in the story that live on Venus where the sun only comes out once every seven years. The children are jealous of one girl named Margot who arrived on Venus later than the others and can still remember the sun. They all long for the sun but Margot wants to see it more because she remembers what it was like. The other kids exclude her and pick on her because of their jealousy. Ray Bradbury often uses metaphors to describe the jealousy that the kids feel toward Margot. Ray Bradbury uses metaphors to describe how the kids deny everything that Margot says. This is shown when nobody believes Margot when she tries to explain how scientists predicted that the sun would come out that day. Some might argue that similes are used more than metaphors, and while both are used, metaphors are shown more consistently in the story. The author also uses metaphors when the sun comes out and the kids are playing to describe the jungle that they played in. Metaphors are used in many places to explain the jealousy that is shown toward Margot.
The sun “..was the color of flaming bronze…” bronze is an alloy color of brown, using color symbolism, the light that the sun produces, it represents comfort and endurance (Bradbury, N.D., 3). The sky surrounding the sun is the color of blue. Blue, symbolizes stability, security, and unity. The sky, influenced by the sun, reaches the state of stability when the sun provides comfort. The sun also “... burned [the jungle] with sunlight…” (Bradbury, N.D., 3). This demonstrates that the jungle progressed with the sunlight. As it soaked up all of the sun’s comforts, the jungle prospered and endurance was given to keeping prospering, causing the season where everything starts to renew itself, springtime.
In this passage, Orwell uses symbolism, imagery, and similes to show the effect the Party has on one’s individual thoughts. “Behind his screwed-up eyelids, a forest of fingers seemed to be moving in a sort of dance, weaving in and out, disappearing behind one another and reappearing again. He was trying to count them, he could not remember why.” Orwell uses the fingers to symbolize the lies the Party tells it citizens by having O’Brien force Winston into believing there are an untrue number of fingers present. Like O’Brien, the Party forces untrue mottos down its members’ throats. “a forest of fingers seemed to be moving in a sort of dance, weaving in and out, disappearing behind one another and reappearing again.” The personification
The birdcage represents how Mrs. Wright was trapped in her marriage, and could not escape it. The birdcage door is broken which represents her broken marriage to Mr. Wright. It also represents Mrs. Wright escaping her marriage from Mr. Wright. When the door is open it allows Mrs. Wright to became a free woman. At one point in time the cage door use to have a lock that locked the bird inside the cage. This represents how Mr. Wright kept Mrs. Wright locked up from society. Mr. Wright knew that by keeping Mrs. Wright locked up, she would never be able to tell anyone how he really acted. Mr. Wright was very cruel to his wife.
Whereas Brown is attempting to inform educators on an essential issue, he does so in a way that discloses his sarcastic and vexed tone simultaneously. Brown carries on his rhymes by means of using humor and sarcasm to highlight his impression of irrationality in what is neglected in the system. He appeals to his audience in a way that uses a mocking rhythm in order to compare his idea of a strong program of study to a customary one. He does so by means of revealing irony during his lines, such as “I wasn’t taught how to look after my health, but mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.” This rhetorical strategy helps Brown achieve his purpose by establishing ironic language in that he compares what he should know, with what he does, while
The use of figurative language strengthens the story by giving examples of things in the story to give the audience a picture of what the author is talking about. It also makes the reader what to read the story because it makes the passage seem more entertaining. It supports the theme by saying that the men that was coming into the yard looked like ghost. It also supports the theme by saying that the man looked like a dranged man when he was trying to get out the house.Figuretive language helpd this story in various ways and this is some figuretive language that I found in the story.”You will bury yourself down there and not speak to a living soul, and “When he saw you coming he dashed off without apology or goodbye as if he seen a ghost. “ Those
I think these chapters are the most easily relatable to our everyday lives compared to the other chapters because decisions are constantly being made. We even have unconscious decisions. For example, we don’t tell our bodies to regulate our heart beat, they just unawaringly naturally do it.
