Eventually, Rapunzel makes the decision to leave the tower because she wants to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. She is assisted in her travels by a man named Flynn Ryder. When Mother Gothel discovers that Rapunzel has left the tower, she employs various methods to try and force her to return. Repression is “the exclusion of distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings from the conscious mind.” (Britannica, 2016). Rapunzel represses the memories that she had as an infant because they conflict with the “truth” that she knows as life. There are two types of anxiety; state anxiety and trait anxiety. Trait anxiety is a persistent trait. It is always present and causes the person who has it to always have a sense that something horrible is about to happen. State anxiety is temporary. It is caused by different, specific situations. Rapunzel suffered from state anxiety. People with high levels of anxiety are” predisposed to somatization. Anxiety can cause tension headaches, hypertension, and ulcers.” (MacArthur SES & Health Network, 2008) Leaving the tower against her mother’s orders caused her great anxiety. Typically, she was not the type of person to worry about everything. This anxiety was temporary, not permanent or persistent. While leaving the tower was the cause of the anxiety, situations arose that caused the anxiety to persist. For example, when they were being chased by both thieves and officers of the law. This situation caused her anxiety to
Imagining the similarities between one of the most famous Shakespearean plays and a new animated Disney movie is difficult, until you look deeply into the characters. From the Shakespearean play Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is extremely similar to Mother Gothel from the Disney movie Tangled. Lady Macbeth is Macbeth’s wife that has strong desires and personality. The movie Tangled created a similar character with Mother Gothel, she is Rapunzel's mother and believes in going after what you want. The two characters are not the exact same, they differ in their desires and in their ending demise. They are much more similar in their motives and their actions which reveal their shared character traits.
Have you ever gone so far to achieve your dreams? In Tangled by Disney, Rapunzel is trapped in a tower by Gothel, who pretends to be her mother. Gothel prohibits Rapunzel from leaving the tower. Every year on her birthday, she sees floating lights in the sky and she dreams about leaving the tower and going to see the lights. When Flynn Rider breaks into her house, she convinces him to take her to see the lights. When Disney introduced Tangled, it was meant to be like every other story of a princess stuck in a tower. Tangled travels through the Hero’s Journey by going on the Call to Adventure, Crossing the First Threshold, Supreme Ordeal, and the Resurrection.
In the original fairy tale “Rapunzel” it states, “She decided to do all that she could to protect the girl. Therefore, she used her magical powers to create a high silver tower in the middle of the forest, and this tower did not have a door through which one could enter and exit, but it did have a small window toward the top”( Schulz 485). And from the fairy tale “Root of The Matter” it states that, “We live on three floors at the top of the lighthouse; the rest is bricked up. For companionship now I have screening gulls and a wide plain of ocean that glistens day and night. Sometimes objects float by, far away. They never come close. Never. I’m the only means available for coming or going in this tower” (Frost 399). Both girls had long beautiful braided hair by which the mothers were able to climb up to see and take care of their daughters. Both the fairy and Mother Gothel ask rapunzel to let down her her hair whenever they needed to go up or down. In the original fairy tale “Rapunzel” it states, “When she stood at the bottom of the tower, she would always say, “Rapunzel, let your hair down so I can climb up” (Schulz 486). In the retelling “The Root of The Matter” it states, “Whenever she wants to go out, Mother Gothel touches me and says into my ear, “Rapunzel, let down your hair now” (Frost 399). This shows that the only one who
Anxiety is a monster that most people have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though anxiety is not actually a monster it still torments thousands of people every day, leaving them weak and scared. Anxiety defined means “distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune” defined by Dictionary.com. In the epic poem of Beowulf, one could say that the townspeople had anxiety when it came to Grendel because they feared what he could do to them.
In the 21st centuries take on the fairytale Rapunzel, the movie “Tangled” depicts the troubled life of an adolescent that is raised by a woman whom is not her mother. Rapunzel is abducted from her crib as an infant by an evil witch, Gothel, for the sole purpose of using her magical hair to enhance her beauty to make her young again. As an eager Rapunzel ages, she soon wants to be set free into a world that she has yet to see.
Anxiety is a feeling of tension associated with a sense of threat of danger when the source of the danger is not known. In comparison, fear is a feeling of tension that is associated with a known source of danger. I believe it is normal for us to have some mild anxiety present in our daily lives. Everyday that I can think of I have some kind of anxiety though out that day. Anxiety warns us and enables us to get ready for the ‘fight or flight’ response. However, heightened anxiety is emotionally painful. It disrupts a person's daily functioning.
The familiar story of Rapunzel, as told by the brothers Jacob Ludwig Carl and Wilhelm Carl Grimm, takes on new meaning with a psychoanalytic interpretation. It is a complex tale about desire, achievement, and loss. The trio of husband, wife, and witch function as the ego, id, and superego respectively to govern behavior regarding a beautiful object of desire, especially when a prince discovers this object.
It may be shocking to learn that 21% of American adults suffer from some sort of anxiety disorder(National Institute of Mental Health Statistics). Do you know the differences between the two major types of anxiety disorder? The two major types of anxiety are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). While many may think PTSD and GAD are one in the same, you may be surprised that they vastly differ in cause and symptoms with their only similarity being their treatment.
What anxiety is. Like fear, anxiety causes nervousness and happens in reaction to danger; however, anxiety is a state of distress that can be drawn out for a long time and puts the body on alert for impending danger. It comes from the visions of possible dangers in the brain. Authors Kaplan and Sadock explained it as being “a diffuse, unpleasant, vague sense of apprehension…” (Ankrom). They are saying that it is a sense of nervousness, and that it makes people be on alert. It can also be described as butterflies in the stomach or a sense of
Though Rapunzel’s lengthy confinement in one room, her home, is convincing evidence of the female’s domestic belonging, it does not adequately demonstrate the connectedness of the woman to the domestic. The ambitious young Prince faces an insurmountable task when he plans to elope with Rapunzel; he must, temporarily, displace the woman from her domestic home. After the Prince decisively wins Rapunzel’s affection, Rapunzel delineates her escape plan: “ 'I will willingly go away with you, but I do not know how to get down. Bring with you a skein of silk every time that you come, and I will weave a ladder with it, and when that is ready I will descend, and you will take me on your horse’” (The Brothers Grimm). First, Rapunzel states she will “go away with [the Prince]” and he will “take [her] on [his] horse,” two statements which reveal both Rapunzel’s dependence upon the Prince and her lack of independence. Though Rapunzel agrees to leave her domestic realm, she does so only to elope in the safe, steady hands of the Prince, venturing from one sphere of domesticity, with her mother, to another sphere of domesticity with a man. Rapunzel also promises to “weave a ladder with [silk].” Weaving, a deep-rooted, traditional female activity arises in Rapunzel because it is both feminine and perfectly accessible within a domestic setting. The woman’s skills, in any patriarchal work, are not
Anxiety is characterized as misery or uneasiness of the mind that is caused by the dread of threat or adversity. The vast majority with a nervousness issue will attempt to evade presentation to whatever triggers their uneasiness. Cases of
Rapunzel is an old fairytale that shares some differences with the Italian version. In the German version the father of Rapunzel is present and is the one in the garden caught taking the rampion plant. This is different from the Italian version which only mentions the mother. This difference shows the differences between both countries at the time these fairy tales were written. Germany during the 1800s, was well off and broken up into different kingdoms. It was more common that a couple stayed together during such economic stability. Italy however, suffered during the time that Petrosinella was written which was 1643. Italy faced foreign domination and economic crises during this time which explains why Rapunzel mother was alone during this time. She was symbolizing the dire times that the country itself was facing. The vegetable that was stolen in the fairy tale also varies between both versions. In the German version, the husband goes after rampion radishes. Radishes and dreams of radishes are thought to be ...
In many fairy tales, there is always a damsel in distress that is beautiful and the male character always falls in love with her. In Rapunzel the short story, Rapunzel is put into a tower and lives there most of her young life by her ‘mother’ before her prince comes to recuse her. The difference between Tangled and Rapunzel the short story is that, Rapunzel is the princess and her prince is actually a thief, which ends up falling in love with her. Tangled illustrates how a naïve and beautiful heroine, evil mother figure, and a shallow egotistical hero can make a fairy tale story end with love and marriage.
I chose to research the genre of fairytales because the genre retold by Grimm’s caught my attention. Fairytales in modern day usually have a happy ending after the good versus evil concept. Rapunzel specifically, isn’t told in its original form.Theres much more darkness and even though happily ever after is in play, not all fairytales end that way. Fairytales have much more depth than people realize in modern day. It portrays the real struggles we face growing up. In Rapunzel, her mother gave her away and she was raised by an enchantress who locked her away. This very much explains child abandonment or a child that has been given up for adoption and the things they face growing up.Theres a connection between these fairytales and real life situations .Fairytales have a way of expressing real life situations in a way that uses a few elements that help tell the story in a way children can understand. Some of the elements include: magic, morals, royalty and love.
