I believe the artist who best exemplifies the Renaissance is Raphael. His work embodies many characteristics of the Renaissance Era like individualism,realism, anatomy, symmetry and linear perceptive. All these can be seen in his painting of Schools of Athens which is one frescoes of the Vatican Palace. It is an stunning painting representing Philosophy of that time. Raphael places the greatest thinkers, Aristotle and Plato, of Grecian time in the center making the them the focal point. The two figures perfectly centered giving the painting a symmetrical feel with even amount of figures on each side and even lighting as well. Raphael used one-point linear perceptive. The Renaissance art had well defined landscapes, natural folds in drapery and three dimensional objects or people. The middle ages art was focused on religion and symbolic representations (Doc.A). At the same time the new artistic styles almost kind of mocked the the movements and interest of the new age. That is how the renaissance changed has man’s view of man on art.(doc.A)
Artists have many motives of (as to) why they create pieces of art. ‘The School of Athens’ by Raphael and ‘Judith Decapitating Holofernes’ by Artemisia Gentileschi shows this. Raphael used a lot of patterns as well as people to show the intellectuality of Athens. Artemisia Gentileschi, on the other hand, depicted a scene from the Old Testament in her artwork.

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni ( March 6, 1475 – February 18, 1564) an Italian Sculptor, painter, architect and a poet was probably the most important artist of the epoch of the Italian Renaissance, a period where arts and science changed from traditional to modern. He was the second of five children, whose parents were Lodovico di Leonardo di Buonarrotti di Simoni and Francesca di Neri del Miniato di Sierra. He was raised in Florence, and after his mother’s death he lived in Settignano. Michelangelo is one of the founders of High Renaissance and an exponent of a big movement called Mannerism. Mannerism “is a period of European paintings, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts lasting from the later years of the Italian Renaissance around 1520 until the arrival of the baroque around 1600….is notable for its intellectual as well as its artificial (as opposed to naturalistic) qualities” (Wikipedia.com) Michelangelo (as well as Leonardo Da Vinci) was considered to be the Archetypal Renaissance man because of his versatility in his disciplines.
Renaissance artists considered the imitation of nature their primary goal. Their search for naturalism became an end it in itself: to persuade onlookers of the reality of the object or event they were portraying. Italian artists began to focus in the area of perspective. An example is the birth of Venus. This connects back to Greco-Roman culture since Venus was one of the God’s of their religion. She is completely nude in the painting which differs very much from the Middle Ages art. Middles Ages art was regulated by religion, so this would have not been allowed. Another example is the death of Jesus, painted by Andrea Mantegna. It truly focuses on the perspective because it makes the viewer of the painting right there as if we are almost in that moment. The portrait is truly focusing on realism. The main differences between medieval and renaissance art was medieval art focused on religion. It stressed world beyond everyday life, used formal figures to express religious concerns, and portrayed scenes of the holy land. The Renaissance was a time of rebirth, as its name entails. In Italy, more people were becoming literate and more books were being printed. More scientific discoveries were being made and therefore more theories were being published. In this time of intellectual prosperity, art also made a great leap. Perspective was the main change during this time period, and throughout the years, starting around 1400, it became more involved and more intricate. Eventually artists were so adept at using it, that it became the primary way to insert intimacy and feelings of emotion into a painting. This evolution of technique paved the way for later artists to play with new approaches to allow the viewer to experience an image in different ways.
In 400 B.C, The Athenian civilization experienced a golden age. The Athens experienced a great amount of peace and prosperity due to their contact and trade with others, and rare warring. During this time, ideas and philosophies were produced. These ideas influenced western civilizations in the areas of politics, science, art and architecture.

The School of Athens (Figure 1) is a fresco painting–a painting done in sections in the fresh plaster–on one of the four walls of the room, the Stanza della Segnatura this room is designated as papal library in the Vatican palace. In this image Raphael represents pictorially the intellectual activity of philosophy. He chooses to represent philosophy by depicting a large number of philosophers in the midst of their activities. The fifty-eight figures who occupy the grandiose architectural space are depicted in the midst of their activity: they are questioning, arguing, demonstrating, reading, and writing. Each figure is characterized so that it is not a mere compositional device, but a shorthand statement of the figure represented (Murray, 62). Raphael rendered the faces of the philosophers from classical statues if known, or else used his own contemporaries for models (Haas, 8)
The German Renaissance provided the society present in Northern Europe at the time unique advances in cultural and artistic practices alike. Such movements also gave creatives, especially those involved in artistic practices the opportunity to flourish and develop as artists at such a pivotal time in history. Of course the artists represented during this time period each had their differences and expressed their practices in different ways, some better in observation and others in paint or design, but if one were to represent the prototype of an artist during the German Renaissance it would of been the visionary that is Albrecht Durer***. The shift between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance was characterized by great socio-economic, political, and religious changes. Politically, the feudal system of the Middle Ages was exchanged for a more stable centralized republic/monarchy system that gave the people more freedom and input. Religiously, secularism became more important as stability gave people a chance to concern themselves with the “here and now” rather than simply the “hereafter.” Socially, there was a shift from dogma and unshakeable belief to humanism and the ability to interpret things for oneself. The Middle Ages began around 400 CE and lasted until 1400 CE while the Renaissance began around 1200 and continued until 1600. The 200 years that overlap between these two periods contain many pieces of “transition” art in which it is obvious that the change is beginning to take place. These collective changes that took place in this period dictated change in art as well. There were changes in iconography, style, purpose, and patronage that facilitated the overall transformation of art from a sense of illustrating what you are told to believe is true to optical realism and conveying how you yourself interpret that “truth”.
The Renaissance art that I've included contains a piece by Robert Campin entitled “Annunciation Triptych,” and another work by Fra Filippo Lippi, called “Madonna and Child Enthroned with Two Angels.” In both of these paintings we see some of the typical themes of Renaissance art. For example, Lippi included in his scene a background which wouldn't have necessarily been needed. Really he could have chosen just about anything, like the woods or the sea, that might have been easier to paint. He chose though what appears to be the inside of a building, likely a church. Not only that but he went to great lengths to ensure everything was in perspective, and the lines and angles are straight and sharp. Similarly Campin has also chosen an interior scenes with strong perspective and exacting details. In both of these the artists seem to be capturing an event, much like with a photography in modern times. While both images portray fictional scenes, the artists wanted to capture the moment to tell a precise historical story. There were three artists in particular that took over the Renaissance period. Their names are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The artist I choose to do is Leonardo da Vinci. He was born on April 15, 1492 in Italy. He was raised by his father and step-mothers.

The Italian Renaissance included some of the greatest artists we have ever seen from Leonard Da Vinci, to Michelangelo, and Raphael. The Renaissance took place from the late thirteenth to sixteenth centuries and is know as the ‘rebirth’. The idea that the rebirth of the arts after being asleep for a thousand years is an amazing thing to grasp. This time brought back light to liberal arts, which were on the brink of being extinct. (Murray 2) What is also interesting about art during this time was that most of the art had Christian in its roots, for example, Botticelli’s The Allegory of Spring (Faure 1) is said to have had a Christian interpretation. (Murray) “Every Italian artist, willingly took the title of architect, sculptor, and painter” (Faure 2). At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the Italian painters had asked the Flemish painters for their secret techniques because the Italians felt like the language of painting was one that was always meant for them. (Faure 4) The sculptors claimed their inspiration from ancient works. Lastly the Renaissance introduced idea of individualism, which helped the Italians get away from everything that was going on during that time. Art during the Renaissance included painting, sculpting and architecture, all of which were an important part in expressing the idea of individualism and making art what is is today.
