Despoil in the military occurs more often than many civilians believe. It is very important to address situations that are entirely intolerable. Rape in the civilian society is seen with disgust and dishonor. When women or men are raped many, don’t report it since they are ashamed that they have endured such an atrocity. Rape is not just an action against an individual, but a violent crime that can scar a life permanently. Rape transpires in all parts of the world, including the United States. When rape victims report the incident, they experience difficulties in the criminal justice system. Many who are raped are blamed for the event, they are often declared, “You were dressed like that, what did you expect?”. The assault the victim …show more content…
“More than
70 members of the US Military encounter coerced and abusive sexual contact, aggravated sexual assault or are raped every day. That 's three every hour” (Chemaly). These statistics are horrible, is this acceptable in any society or department? Men are also targets of assault and rape in the United States Military, by far it is evident that woman are assaulted and raped more than men, since men are often less victims and more the attackers of this and most women by physical strength are weaker than men.
The ironic thing is that there are more rape reports made with servicemen than of servicewomen in the military. “In 2012 thirteen thousand nine hundred men reported rape, attempted rape or unwanted sexual touching, and twelve thousand one hundred woman reported the same incidents in 2012 a total of twenty six thousand for both men and military woman”
(Childress).
Regarding the data shown, if we divide the United States Military into their branches, the
Marines had the most rates in assaults concerning servicewomen, which were seven point nine percent that were assaulted. The Navy had the upmost highest in servicemen assaults, which

The Navy was in second place concerning Navy servicewomen and the first runner-up for the servicemen was the Marines. For 2014, “The Marine Corps reported the highest percentage of assaults against women, with 7.9 percent reporting having endured an assault, while the
In 1996, Captain Derrick Robinson, Sergeant Delmar Simpson, and Sergeant Nathanael Beech were arraigned for their suspected involvement in one of the biggest sex scandals the United States Military had seen. According to CNN, between these three men, charges of rape and adultery were pending in a huge case of sexual misconduct against female soldiers at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland (CNN, 2996). Following this incident, the United States Military took it upon themselves to open a telephone hotline to encourage the reporting of similar harsh crimes. Furthermore, the spike in reporting influenced extensive research to examine the prevalence of rape against women soldiers in the U.S. Military (Titunik, 2000). This paper will explore the dynamics of rape against women soldiers in the military and the research done on its prevalence.
The common story from victims who report being raped, according to a Military Rape Crisis Center worker, is that they were “met with disbelief and skepticism, blamed for the crime, and disposed of one way or another,” (Kitfield). Until the military stops re-victimizing the victims it will never be able to completely eradicate rape from the ranks.
Rape is a virus that infects every nation, culture and society. It is constantly referred to as “the unfinished murder”, because of the deep state of despair the rapist leaves the victim in. There is no common identifiable trend that determines who will be a rape victim. Women are not assaulted because of their attitudes or actions, they are attacked simply because they are present. With rapists, just as with their victims, there is no identifiable trend. The old myth that only “sick, dirty, old, perverted men” commit rapes is a lie that society tells itself in order to sleep better at night. The startling truth is that most rapists work under a veil of normalcy. In order for the percentage of rapes to decrease, we have to change our ideas about rape and let go of the old myths of the past. And until this happens, rape will continue to plague our world at large.
The purpose of this essay is to discuss the issue of rape and sexual assault in the military. The number of attacks for rape and sexual assault in the military are at an all-time high. Women have recently been allowed to fight on the front line. While this may be a huge achievement for women-kind, for this woman, it is a very scary thought. I am a junior at Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences; a school geared towards students wishing to enter the medical field. I may be forced to join the military one day if a war breaks out and women are needed to protect the country. I would be happy to serve my country if I did not have to be scared of my fellow soldiers. Rape and sexual assault are major issues in the military and have been for many years without much effort to decrease the attacks. I am suggesting that unless the rape and sexual assault issue is fixed, the amount of people joining the military, specifically the women, will decrease greatly.
Sexual assault in the military has become one of the most controversial of all issues that have been discussed over the years. The topic has received extensive media coverage and has contributed to multiple media scandals. According to a Newsweek report done in 2011, women are more likely to be assaulted by fellow soldiers than killed in combat. The Department of Defense estimates approximately 19,000 sexual assaults occur per year amongst military personnel. That number is stifling considering that in the last year only 1,108 troops filed for investigation, and of those only 575 cases were processed.

Rape causes depression, loss of self-esteem, self-incrimination, and suicide. Therefore the consequences of rape should be life in prison or put in a mental institution. Rape should be banned nationally because you don’t know who could be raped next. Victims fear personal and family safety after a tragic incident like being raped.
Sexual assault is a problem that affects many students in colleges. Sexual assault is defined as “any unwanted contact” (6) performed on “an unwilling victim, without consent” (2). This means anything from touching to completed rape. Without consent means that “vigorous efforts were made to avoid sexual contact” (2). Physical symptoms of sexual assault can tamper with the victim’s quality of life. It can be pelvic pain, migraines, and even disability that can prevent a victim from working. There are over 32,000 pregnancies a year that are a result of completed rape, but problems with pregnancy can also be a result of sexual assault. In addition to these effects, women who experience this assault are more likely to contract sexually transmitted diseases (2).
An estimated 18 percent of women in the US reported being raped at least once in their lifetimes, according to a 2007 study cited by the Center for Research on Violence Against Women. For college women, the numbers are slightly higher: 1 out of 5 women report being raped during their college years (as cited in Lawyer, Resnick, Von Bakanic, Burkett, Kilpatrick, 2010, p. 453). To better contextualize those numbers, let’s look at SF State. A little more than 17,000 women went to school here in 2013, according to the demographics listed on the SF State website. If we were to follow those women over the entire span of their college years, we can assume that 2,400 of them would get raped.
Rape can happen to anyone at any time. Rape prevention strategies help decrease the risk, but the risk never drops to zero percent. In our society of rape myths, gender ideology, and exposure of sex in the media, especially in advertising, and especially when it involves violence, rape will be in our culture for a long time. Our culture promotes this brand of sexuality and we turn our cheeks to rape and any negative form of sex.
Did you know that ninety-seven percent of rapists will never spend a day in jail? (RAINN) This fact is depressing considering the large percentage of rape victims. Things like rape and violence have a severe impact on the mentality level of people. Their lives will change forever after going through an intense situation such as being molested, beaten, or anything along those lines. It has caused people to commit the same crime, become severely depressed and suicidal, as well as many other unfortunate events. People look down on those who have gone through such events, some may say things such as, "you probably deserved it”, “you were dressed provocatively" or "how did you not enjoy that?” As such, rape is an underexplored
...apidly our world today. There are hundreds of places people may go and visit for help or more information about rape and sexual violence. It is very important that when and if it happens, the victim needs to report the crime to authorities immediately. People must know the truth about rape and sexual violence and what to do about it.
Male Soldiers feel comfortable around one another when the female is not around, and feel that in that environment it is ok to make the sexist jokes. In their minds “the guys just get it,” they do not realize that there could be one male Soldier in the crowd who is uncomfortable and now alienated. Another great example Victim advocates see all the time is how SHARP has turned into a joke. Almost every Victim Advocate can share a story where they heard a Soldier say something inappropriate, but follow it up by saying “SHARP”, or see someone slap another soldier on the butt and say “Good Game” as if to say it is ok to be inappropriate as long as you say SHARP or Good Game. It is these cultural norms, that if not erased will continue to perpetuate the lack of change in the
