Ralph In William Golding’s “Lord Of The Flies” Ralph’s character started as a central character as he was a neutral leader at the start. The development or the evolution of his character started with him being optimistic and enthusiastic and then starting to suffer challenges throughout the story and trying to find ways to survive on this civilized island and challenges against Jack. Throughout the characterization of Ralph, Golding teaches the reader that human nature is unstable and can take you to darkness. At the start of the story, Ralph is enthusiastic about the situation or the arrival on the island. He believes this island is a good place and that they can have fun without adults. The quote “Ignoring Piggy’s ill-omened talk, he dreamed pleasantly”(Golding 15). This quote highlights the self-disrespect that Ralph was giving to Piggy at the beginning of the story and not caring about him. In the middle of the story, Ralph starts to be more caring and selfless and becomes self-conscious. His one goal for him was to get rescued and also not be mean to others. Quote: “That was a dirty trick”(Golding 72). This quote shows that Ralph's character is growing self-conscious and makes rules that are necessary for the team to survive, he also begins to understand the importance of keeping a civilized island and tries to establish a rule “The Conch” to keep a stable life on the island. In this quote, Ralph realizes that no one is going to rescue them and they're going to stay on this island. The quote “No, I’m not. I just think you’ll get back all right”(Golding 111). This quote shows that even though Ralph realizes that they're going to get rescued, he still has hope of trying to find the way to get rescued and secure everybody's life.
