Leaders are usually the best people in your group, and usually not a kid. Kids are usually immature and don’t have priorities, which is why they are not fit to be a leader. A leader is someone who cares about other people, makes and enforces rules, and gains other people’s trust, which kids don’t usually do. Leaders typically don’t play around, or tease other people. In the Lord of the Flies, this is what happened to Ralph. He became the chief of a group of boys with no adults, and now has to care for everyone. At first, he isn’t like a leader, he kept fooling around and did anything he wanted to do. He didn’t care about anyone and just wanted to have fun. Later, he started to have priorities and rules and in the end, he became good leader. …show more content…
In the book, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Ralph changes throughout the Lord of the Flies by being more like a leader. At the beginning of the book, Ralph is not like a leader.
A good example is when he didn’t care about priorities. Golding writes, “‘This is our island. It’s a good island. Until the grownups come to fetch us we’ll have fun’” (35). Ralph doesn’t want any grownups on the island just because he wants to have fun, which suggests that Ralph doesn’t care about necessary things for survival, like shelters. Ralph only wants to have fun and does not want any adults to care about them. Another way Ralph is not being a good leader is when he is teasing Piggy. Ralph says, “‘Sucks to your ass-mar!’”(13). Piggy gets teased by Ralph because of his asthma, which emplifies that Ralph is not being a good leader since he teases the boys in his group. Teasing people will let the person think that he or she is not a good leader. Also, Ralph is childish and does not care about other people. Ralph doesn’t ask for Piggy’s name, which is another way Ralph is not a good leader. Golding writes, “Ralph did not take the hint so the fat boy was forced to continue… ‘They used to call me ‘Piggy’’”(11). Because Ralph does not care about Piggy’s name, Piggy is forced to tell Ralph his name. Ralph not caring about Piggy’s name portrays that he doesn’t care about anyone else’s name, which is not a trait of a good leader. Ralph not caring about priorities, the boys names and feelings relieves that Ralph is not a good
leader. Ralph then starts to be a leader, but not a fully good leader. He later started to have priorities, but doesn’t enforce them well enough. At first, he makes the rule to keep the fire going, but doesn’t enforce it. Ralph says, “‘If a ship comes near the island they may not notices us. So we must make smoke… We must make a fire’”(38). Because Ralph cares about the boys, he makes a fire for rescue, which implies that Ralph is being a better leader. Ralph doesn’t enforce the rule and as a result he let a ship go by, suggesting that Ralph is not fully a good leader yet. Another example is when Ralph starts to care about the rules. Ralph says, “‘You’re breaking the rules [Jack]!’”(91). Ralph tells Jack not to break the rules which foreshadows that Ralph is starting to be a leader. Knowing that the rules are very important to society, Ralph tells Jack to not break the rules. Jack still breaks the rules, which hints that Ralph is not a good leader yet because he can’t control whether the boys break the rules or not. Also, Ralph telling Jack not to hunt and to do other more important things is an example of Ralph becoming a leader. Ralph says, “‘We need shelters...If it rains like when we dropped in we’ll need shelters’”(52). Putting priorities first, Ralph is becoming a better leader because he thinks ahead. However, Jack doesn’t help Ralph which gives a sense that Ralph didn’t enforce the rule and is not a good leader yet. Ralph making rules and telling people to not break the rules gives a hint that Ralph is a good leader but Ralph not enforcing those rules defines that Ralph isn’t fully a good leader yet. Later, Ralph is like a real leader. He makes rules. Ralph says that they need to keep the fire going, use the bathroom by the rocks, get water, build shelters, and that fire is only allowed on the mountain (79-81). Ralph he cares about the boys and is making rules for their benefit. He is being more like a leader by caring about other people. Also, Ralph not bullying Piggy is another example of how Ralph is a good leader. Ralph asks, “‘Piggy, Are you the only one left?’ ‘There’s some littluns.’ ‘They don’t count. No biguns?’ ‘Oh-Samneric. They’re collecting wood.’ ‘Nobody else?’ ‘Not that I know of’”(155). Piggy staying with Ralph hints at the fact that he thinks Ralph is better now. Ralph earning the trust of Piggy portrays that he has gained the trust of his group, which is what a leader should do. Ralph doesn’t bully people anymore, which is one trait of a good leader. Another trait of being a good leader is when you punish people for breaking the rules, which is what Ralph did to Jack. Ralph yells, “‘All this talk… Talk, talk! Who wanted it? Who called the meeting?’”(126). This makes Ralph mad at Jack because Jack only cares about hunting. Ralph thinking about priorities first suggests that Ralph is a good leader since he thinks about priorities first. Ralph cares for the boys by making rules, enforcing them, and gaining other people’s trust, which are traits of a good leader. Ralph is becoming a better leader from the beginning of the book. At first Ralph bullies people, but now he doesn’t. He didn’t care about people, and wants to have fun. As he grew he became more mature, and he care about others more. While he is becoming more mature, he is making rules and starting to yell at people who go against the rules. A leader is someone like Ralph, who needs to care about people, who needs to have priorities in order to survive. A leader is someone who’s is responsible, who is not savage. Like a leader, he earned the trust of his group. He also stopped bullying people. All of these traits show that Ralph is a leader. He is now a good leader, which is what people need if they get stranded on an island or in a desperate situation.
According to Peter Drucker, he claims, “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” Leadership is a commitment that is meant to be kept and done accurately. Leading a group or a society can lead to dreadful obstacles, but it’s your responsibility to have a solution to end. Ralph and Jack as a leader cause a majority of downhill for the boys. Affecting themselves and their surroundings to abruptly fall into pieces. Which lead to a mass destruction of the island, Lord of the Flies. The devastating events on this island lead to the massive chaos of Lord of the Flies, blaming Ralph and Jack for denial, lack of cooperation and inefficient leadership.
The first step into being a successful leader is taking initiative. A good leader has to show they are in charge and are willing to take control of a group. In “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph takes initiative right from the beginning of the story. As Ralph and Piggy meet the other group of boys on the island, Ralph takes control by raising the conch which is the item he uses to get the boys to meet. He then says, “Seems
Ralph, the first character introduced to the audience, is probably the most likable character in the entire story. Although he does not ponder such deeply like Piggy, is not as spiritual like Simon, or as energetic as Jack, there is something in him that attracts the audience. Ralph serves as the protagonist of the story. He is described as being a playful, innocent child in the beginning, but towards the end he matures significantly. In the first chapter where he takes his clothes off and goes swimming like any child would do, he seems to be Adam in the Garden of Eden, a child left to play with the nature.
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a peculiar story about boys stranded on an island, and the plot and characters relate to many prevailing events and problems. A specific problem that is currently occurring is the mutual hatred and enmity between North Korea and South Korea. This is a current event, but the North and South’s hostility has been ongoing since 1945, when Korea was split into North and South, Communist and Capitalist. When the 38th parallel(Border between North and South Korea) was created, Kim Il-Sung ruled the North, and Syngman Rhee ruled the South. As of now, a power hungry dictator, Kim Jong-un rules the north, and an optimistic president who wants to see change was recently elected in the South, named Moon Jae-in. In Golding’s book, Ralph is a character who aimed to keep everyone alive and to stay together. Jack on the other hand, wanted to have fun and hunt, and although he also wanted to be rescued, he made no effort to help. In this sense, North Korea is a clear representation of the character Jack and his quest for power, and opposingly, South Korea is a representation of Ralph and his strive for order, democracy, and civilization.
There is an unknown perfect science to being a leader. Some say that this is something you can attain over time with training or guidance, and others say it's a talent you must be born with. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one of the main characters Ralph, is elected the leader. The reason he is elected the leader isn't boldly laid out for the reader, but what is noticed, is that Ralph carries the true essence of a leader. Ralph can be seen as a great leader by the way he has everyone's best interest in mind, by the way he sets certain rules to maintain a civil society, and how he calls assemblies to address the issues that he has become most concerned with.
In the novel, The Lord of the Flies, leadership is one of the main important qualities. If I had to choose between Jack and Ralph to follow in the story, I would choose Ralph. Although he ended up struggling near the end of the story, I still found him to be a good leader.
Lord of the Flies is a novel written by William Golding in 1954 about a group of young British boys who have been stranded alone together on an island with no adults. During the novel the diverse group of boys struggle to create structure within a society that they constructed by themselves. Golding uses many unique literary devices including characterization, imagery, symbolism and many more. The three main characters, Ralph, Piggy, and Jack are each representative of the three main literary devices, ethos, logos, and pathos. Beyond the characterization the novel stands out because of Golding’s dramatic use of objective symbolism, throughout the novel he uses symbols like the conch, fire, and Piggy’s glasses to represent how power has evolved and to show how civilized or uncivilized the boys are acting. It is almost inarguable that the entire novel is one big allegory in itself, the way that Golding portrays the development of savagery among the boys is a clear representation of how society was changing during the time the novel was published. Golding is writing during
Much of history’s most renown literature have real-world connections hidden in them, although they may be taxing uncover. William Golding’s classic, Lord of the Flies, is no exception. In this work of art, Golding uses the three main characters, Piggy, Jack, and Ralph, to symbolize various aspects of human nature through their behaviors, actions, and responses.
How are the characters of Ralph, Jack and Piggy established in the opening chapters of the novel Lord of the Flies At the start of the novel we learn that during a nuclear war, there was an atomic explosion. Many boys were evacuated on an aircraft with a detachable passenger tube. They were flying over tropical seas via Gibraltar and Addis Ababa when the tube was released and crashed-landed in the jungle of an island. The aircraft flew off in flames and overnight the remains of the tube were swept out to sea in a storm.
Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I had many issues doing this throughout my project because I am only one person and I can’t be everywhere at once. Thusly made being a leader a drudgery. But I had an incredible set of adults guiding me along the way, who taught me that being a leader was not doing everything myself, being a leader
What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. You also have to know what harmful characteristics a leader may possess to determine if they are good leaders or not.
People are privileged to live in an advanced stage of development known as civilization. In a civilization, one’s life is bound by rules that are meant to tame its savage natures. A humans possesses better qualities because the laws that we must follow instill order and stability within society. This observation, made by William Golding, dictates itself as one of the most important themes of Lord of the Flies. The novel demonstrates the great need for civilization ion in life because without it, people revert back to animalistic natures.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
In chapter 10 Lord of the Flies by William Golding, readers are shocked to see Simon’s death come about in such a grotesque fashion. When Ralph talks to Piggy about the murder to make himself feel better, Piggy refuses to acknowledge his partake in the “accident”. Ralph confronts Piggy, “At last Ralph stopped. He was shivering. “Piggy.” “Uh?” “That was murder.” “ You stop it!” Said Piggy, shrilly. “ What good’er you doing talking like that?” He jumped to his feet and stood over Ralph. “ It was dark. There was that- bloody dance. There was lightning and thunder and rain. We was scared!” “ I wasn't scared,” said Ralph slowly, “ I was- I don't know what I was.” “We was scared!” said Piggy excitedly. “ Anything might have happened. It wasn't- what you said.” He was gesticulating, searching for a formula.
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
