Author Ralph Ellison once wrote, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” Ellison’s statement is highly agreed upon. Being yourself can establish identity and build up self confidence. Also, every person is unique.
Being yourself can establish identity by being yourself. Knowing who you are will make life much easier and less worrying. No matter what happens in life, you'll always know who you are. By knowing this, an individual will benefit from it. It is easy to get lost in such an expanding society if a person doesn't know who they are, so knowing yourself inside and out, you can get back on the right path.
Self confidence is a very important trait

"But there was no automobile accident," Mr. Norton said kindly, "nor was the boy responsible. You may send him away, we won't need him now." My eyes suddenly filled. I felt a wave of gratitude at his words” (Ellison 103)
Identity is the essential core of who we are as individuals, the conscious experience of the self-inside.
True identity is something people must create for themselves by making choices that are significant and that require a courageous commitment in the face of challenges. Identity means having ideas and values that one lives by” (Merton). Concurring with Merton, a person is not given their identity at birth or while developing as an embryo, rather it is something that you create for yourselves over the course of life through decisions and actions made by the individual. Identity is something that one may not be fully aware of or discover until the last breath. Identity can be influenced through associations with others, and environmental factors.
Before beginning the explanation of how an identity is formed, one must understand what an identity is. So, what is identity? To answer this, one might think of what gives him individuality; what makes him unique; what makes up his personality. Identity is who one is. Identity is a factor that tells what one wants out of life and how he is set to get it. It tells what kind of a person one is by the attitude and persona he has. And it depends upon the mixture of all parts of one’s life including personal choices and cultural and societal influences, but personal choices affect the identity of one more than the others.
Identity is a group of characteristics, data or information that belongs exactly to one person or a group of people and that make it possible to establish differences between them. The consciousness that people have about themselves is part of their identity as well as what makes them unique. According to psychologists, identity is a consistent definition of one’s self as a unique individual, in terms of role, attitudes, beliefs and aspirations. Identity tries to define who people are, what they are, where they go or what they want to be or to do. Identity could depend on self-knowledge, self-esteem, or the ability of individuals to achieve their goals. Through self-analysis people can define who they are and who the people around them are. The most interesting point about identity is that some people know what they want and who they are, while it takes forever for others to figure out the factors mentioned before. Many of the individuals analyzed in this essay are confused about the different possible roles or positions they can adopt, and that’s exactly the reason they look for some professional help.
Everyone struggles with identity at one point in their life. It will eventually happen to everyone. Identity is how people see one another, it is one of the most important things about someone. Identity goes hand in hand with experience. One’s experiences can impact one’s identity.
... and fight to gain back their identity and true being. Having an identity makes people feel apart of something bigger, and understand what it means to be the real you and not to hide who you are, or let fear get the best of you.
Ralph Ellison the author of the novel ‘Invisible Man’ like the protagonist in the novel came from the South, Oklahoma to be exact. He was born on March 1, 1914; he became a world renowned author and received an award for the novel ‘Invisible Man’, the novel speaks about a black man’s journey to finding himself amidst the heat of white America. The insatiable desire to find one’s self is a task that may never be completed, going through the motions of life channeling and living other people’s notions of what their lives are supposed to be. We see such a behavior portrayed by The nameless narrator in ‘Invisible Man’ by Ralph Ellison published in 1952 who struggles with the self-perception of himself, like many African Americans of the 1930’s did and African Americans of the present still struggle with today. Identity and race to a greater extent both plays a monumental role in the growth of many African Americans, both underlying the issues associated with being a black man at that time and being able to identify with their ‘blackness’ and dealing with trying to possess a sense of self. The nameless narrator personifying the real invisible man, struggling to disassociate himself with his blackness, trying to running away from all that truly made him who he was.
Webster's dictionary describes identity as sameness of essential character, individuality, or the fact of being the same person as one claims to be. So your identity can include your name, your age, your job title, or simply characteristics of your body. These things are facts, facts you don't care to share with the world. Just as the word suggests your identity is something by which you can be identified. These are things that describe a person in terms a stranger would understand. This area of identity is proof of who you are. However, your identity is also composed of what you are. They mark your role in society. Who you are and what you do make up your identity. This is essential in the human life span because people are always searching to find where they truly belong in the world.
In order to be yourself, you have to tell yourself that the people who tell you to change want you to struggle. You should love yourself and tell people who want to change you that you don’t want to be like one of them, you want to be yourself. Wouldn’t it be boring if everyone looked exactly alike? I think so. There would be no way to tell anyone apart. Everyone is exactly the same. Be yourself, everyone else is already taken. Marilyn Monroe’s quote relates to the story because you should live life and be yourself. Not what other people want you to be. “It’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring”
It is very important for people to know their true identity. It is important because if someone does not know their true identity, they would struggle to be themselves. I believe this because it would be very easy for someone to try to hang out with the wrong people or fall into the wrong group of people. If one falls into the wrong group, they would try to be like the people that is in their group of so called “friends”. In two videos the class recently watched called “Hercules” and “April”, the main characters struggle to find their self-identity.

"God made you so you can be your own individual. You shouldn't be anyone else." -- Wyclef Jean
What makes up an identity is simply what makes a person unique, their personality, actions, and beliefs. Although identity is something that is mainly palpable, it can be shown and represented in physical mediums to help communicate a message. Self-portraits allow an artist to paint themselves on how they view themselves in the society, which may help communicate their state of mind. How you may choose to disseminate your identity may influence how people view you, and ultimately will change how you perceive yourself. Since identity effects how people view you, it is best for people to just reveal their true selves, and not form to social norms. Because your identity is unchanging, unique, and special, because it is who you are - not what people want you to
