Pink in his book Drive can be explained in several different ways. Motivation for me differs from these explanations as it is not only about rewards and punishment, but also about self-gratification. The ‘monster’ can be anything, not necessarily evil, but can take form of any action that is of importance to a particular person. For example, if I love to play basketball and I play often, eventually, to some degree, I will get better at some aspect of the game. On the contrary, if I love drinking alcohol and I drink often, eventually I will get better at it. As a result, my tolerance for alcohol will go up and most likely my appetite for alcohol will go up as well. This same principle can apply to child development. Children are more likely to engage in more positive behaviors and do better on intellectual tests when they’re parents actively play with them. Tough states that, “The children who parents were counseled to play more with them did better … on tests of I.Q., aggressive behavior, and self-control.” Basically, this quote is making the point that in the experiment discussed in the article, the parents who were trained to play more with their children – not simply give them milk like the other group in the experiment – did much better when it comes to social behavior, like controlling themselves, reduce aggression, and intellectual benefits. I feel that this is true because when parents play with their children, they build a bond with the child and their child’s brain is learning a lot more with the parent.

The principles of relationship building with children are to make clear key points as understanding is the key aim of most communication. A good way to achieve this is to get the children to repeat back to you they key points you have made. In addition to this being considerate and trying to take into account what situations children maybe experiencing outside of school that could cause them to become stressed to even act out. Also being able to listen to what children are saying and being respectful by promoting the type of behaviour that shows courtesy and respect.
