Recommended: Characteristics of a hero
A true hero is somebody willing to sacrifice themselves to do good deeds and help others in need at all costs. A hero does not inflict pain upon other people just because they want to and do bad things. Rainsford is not a hero because he killed General Zaroff, a hunter who challenged Rainsford in a hunt. It’s a game where Zaroff hunts his “prey”, or Rainsford. Rainsford has to elude him for three days, if he does, he wins. So Rainsford is not a hero because he killed Zaroff when it wasn’t necessary and he doesn’t care about other’s feelings, just himself. He told Whitney, “You’re a big game hunter, not a philosopher, who care show the jaguar feels?”. Rainsford doesn’t care about other’s feelings. Then, after the game, he told Zaroff, “I am
The most dangerous game began as a sport for one man. His name is Sanger Rainsford. In Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford, an avid hunter, is lost at sea, stranded on “Ship-Trap” Island-every sailor’s worst nightmare. Rainsford goes through a series of events that prove to be life-altering. Even though Sanger Rainsford went through many trials and tribulations, he never lost his intelligence, composure, or his bravery.
A skilled hunter sprints desperately through the woods, realizing the futility of hiding from his greatest foe: his own kind. Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is the story of a hunter that becomes the hunted. The story explores the sense of extreme terror the protagonist feels being pursued by a psychopath living on a mysterious island. This protagonist, Rainsford, has many traits that aid him in his battle with the general. By demonstrating his cunning, sly, and remorseful traits, Rainsford shows the story’s theme of “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes”.
As we read “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, we are introduced to Rainsford. The true survivor expresses several characteristics that help him to defeat General Zaroff and win the game. Connell not only shows us that by being confident, quick thinking and adaptive, Rainsford is able to survive against the most inhumane people like General Zaroff, but he concludes that these characteristics of a true survivor can help us to survive conflicts of our own society as well.
Aristotle, an ancient Greek philosopher and scientist, conveys, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom”. In other words, Aristotle states that the gaining of self-knowledge provides an individual with the ability to know one’s personal gifts and accountabilities. To start one’s adult life a person must pursue the journey of self-discovery to learn in depth about their skills and weaknesses. Individuals must find themselves through the limitations and ordeals that they face during their voyage for self-awareness. For example, in Tim O’Brien’s short story, “On the Rainy River”, the narrator shares his story about self-discovery. O’Brien looks back into his past, to the time when he was called to serve in the Vietnam War. O’Brien’s initial
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the protagonist, Rainsford, is a smart, clever, resilient man who keeps a cool head in stressful and dangerous situations. Rainsford is not allowed to leave the island he washes up on after he falls off the yacht he was traveling on, because the mentally disturbed general wants to hunt people with Rainsford. Rainsford makes a deal with the general to win his freedom. If Rainsford can evade Zaroff for three nights, then Rainsford is free to leave the island. During the hunt, Rainsford must think quickly and be resourceful in order to stay alive. Rainsford is an extremely experienced hunter who writes books about his hunting experiences. When Rainsford is running from the
Survival skills can take over when in a life or death situation. The protagonist, Rainsford, in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a clear example of this. While on the way to hunting expedition Rainsford is thrown overboard his ship and swims to the nearby shore of Ship Trap Island. He explores the island and finds a chateau. He is invited in by the owner, General Zarroff, and they begin to converse. Here Rainsford learns something dark about this man that will lead to him being on the run for his life. He is forced to let his survival skills, resourcefulness, thinking on his feet, and his good eye, take center stage in the fight for his life.
A hero is someone who is confident and competent. They show that they are fearless and put others before them. A hero is alert and aware of the lives he or she lives. Heroes usually have a passion for what they do and they do it and finish it, no matter the consequence. Therefore sacrifice contributes more to heroism because heroes putting themselves before others shows that they are selfless.
Sacrifice is very important to making a hero. Someone who is willing to sacrifice something shows heroism because they are giving up something. For example, people who go to war, are sacrificing themselves in order to protect their nation, are considered heros. They know they might not survive, but they still go and they try and give effort. “He didn’t lose himself in horror. Which is a special way of being brave, of being courageous”, from “Accidental Hero”. This quote shows that Harvey Smith is a hero because he went to war, but didn’t lose himself to fear or horror. Harvey Smith sacrificed himself and went to war, and doesn’t think he did anything heroic, however the author believes he was heroic because he didn’t lose himself and it was in a special way. “I could not love thee, Dear, so much,
When people think about heros it is a person in a cape flying into burning buildings to save people or fighting a villain to save the world. According to Oxford Dictionary a hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. This shows how just normal people can be qualified as heros. A book that exemplifies this is To Kill A Mockingbird because it is filled with people that went out of their way to help others or the society as a whole. A person who did this in particular was Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch was a hero because he fell under the definition and was admired for his courage, achievements, and noble qualities.
In the story, The Dangerous Game, Rainsford was justified to kill Zaroff. For example, Rainsford figures out that Zaroff doesn't want to hunt for animals anymore, but instead he wants to hunt for people. Rainsford soon realizes that Zaroff is wanting to kill him. Zaroff was originally going to kill Rainsford initially, so it only makes sense for Rainford to kill Zaroff when he can. For instance, Rainsford realizes that Zaroff is suggesting that him and Rainsford should fight each other. “‘Tonight, said the general, ‘we will hunt- you and I’”, “‘You don't mean…’ cried Rainsford… ‘Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine’”(Connell 6). If someone wants to kill a person and the other person knows
In conclusion Rainsford was only protecting himself and the people around him. So yes, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. The quote "character is what you are in the dark" relates to Rainsford because if he hadn’t gotten hunted he never would have felt the fear nor anger to Kill General Zaroff, which needed to be
Rain Man is about two brothers who comes from two different walks of life. The first brother name is Charlie Babbitt who is a young struggling Los Angeles businessman who sells expensive cars for a living. Charles is a self-centered person who only cares about himself and what he can gain from others. Charles is getting ready to lose his business when he gets a call that his father Sanford Babbitt has passed away. Charles has not spoken with his father for many of years and his father lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Upon arrival to his father house to talk with the “will “person he finds out that all of 3,000,000 dollars will go to an unnamed person in a trust. Charles was only granted his father 1948 Buick convertible (Bed of rose).
Finally, Tim O’Brien conveys how society’s view on courage plays an important part in the creation of guilt for soldiers in the Vietnam War. At the start of “On the Rainy River”, Tim O’Brien is drafted to be in the Vietnam War against his will. O’Brien says, “I was drafted to fight a war I hated...the American War in Vietnam seemed to me wrong.,” (40). However, regardless if one was against the war, they were forced to anyway. In adhesion, society developed one stance on the war pertaining to courage, which is that the man needs to do the bravest thing, which was to go to war and fight. Although this also ties with the theme of masculinity with men being tough, it more importantly exemplifies courage in going to risk your life for the good of the country.
Savant syndrome isn’t bad or harmful at all to the autistic person it is actually highly beneficial to the person and other people so there is no need for treatment for this. There have been no previous records of anyone trying to treat savant. A big benefit that Charlie had from Raymond was being able to count playing cards. Charlie taught his brother how to play black jack. After Charlie took Raymond to the casinos in Las Vegas Raymond help Charlie when a bunch of money.
A hero is defined as: A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities (Oxford). This definition can be altered to incorporate many perspectives of a ‘hero’. Two person’s idea of a hero may be similar, but the exact identity in their respective perspectives will vary. In my opinion all it takes is an average man laying a coat across a shivering child on the streets to make the leap from average to hero. Forrest Gump is a hero because he takes the extra step, exceeds everyone’s expectations of him, such as when he was young and got his leg brace stuc...
