Introduction
After waiting so long to read this book, I'm glad I wasn't disappointed. Eleanor and Park is a young-adult/romance novel written by Rainbow Rowell, and published in 2013. It is about two high school misfits who first meet each other on the bus to school and eventually fall in love.
Setting
The story takes place in “the Flats”; an all white neighbourhood in Omaha, Nebraska. The year is 1886 and the story involves many references to this era. The whole story takes place over around one school year.
Outline of Plot Details
Eleanor first into moves the neighbourhood and is unwillingly offered a seat on the bus to school by Park. After many days of bus rides in silence, Park finds out that Eleanor reads Park’s comics. Eleanor is stated to be a “big girl” with bright red hair, and has come back home after being kicked out for a year. She has a dysfunctional family, and lives a life where most necessities are luxuries. Park is a half Korean kid who is described as popular among the other kids in school, although he is very quiet. His family is much more stable, but he has some issues with meeting his father’s expectations. The antagonist of the story is Eleanor’s abusive and alcoholic stepdad, Richie.
Thematic Analysis
One of the themes in Eleanor and Park is love or more specifically, first love and what it's like to fall for someone when you haven't loved someone before. Eleanor and Park are each other's first real loves and although they know they probably won't last, they were desperate enough to try. They go from being awkward strangers on the bus to admitting their love for eachother. This novel challenges the idea of love at first sight and what we find attractive.

The story takes place in Annadel, a rural town seated in Justice County of southwestern West Virginia, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author does a fantastic job bringing the reader to the setting through the story being depicted by four different characters’ self narrated stories, which effectively puts the reader in the character’s shoes. In addition, a unique trait is added, with the dialogue being written in a presumably region and period specific style southern dialect. This feature not only makes the reader feel as though they are there at that time and place, but also provides for a more interesting read. While the unique style added to the dia...

Fairytales and modern day movies project a stereotypical portrayal of love, idealizing it and ignoring the not so happy ever after when the prince and princess go back to their castle. Walker and Salinger in their respective novels present the idea of love with much more verisimilitude without the traditional symbols of castles and titles. Instead, opting for a warts and all exploration of love, focusing on its utopian and dystopian elements. Walker’s ‘The Color Purple’ is a tale of a black woman who is driven to lesbian love due to the abuse undertaken by men. J. D. Salinger’s ‘The Catcher in the Rye’, similarly speaks of a sexually frustrated young man not able to fulfill his desires due to societal constraints. Both the novels encapsulate realistic elements of love like the healing and harmful effects it can have on humans; we see all the pure forms of love as juxtaposed through the plot line with the absence of parental love, love between siblings and homosexual love. But, through all of the toils begotten by both Celie and Holden, love is a constant. ‘’Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres’’.
The story begins with a child standing on a street corner in the summer. When a dark brown dog, with a rope tied around his neck approaches him. The author gives no great detail to the setting of this story. Which leads the reader to believe that one must use their own view from the text and go from there. In this case, it seemed to be in the 1920’s, simply because he speaks on the cobble stone avenue and the trucks passing by. Also the way the story is told, seems to be that era.
