Radiology services expanded substantially while the tools for radiologist multiplied for patient treatment and diagnosis. Although the workload in radiology increased, the number of radiologists decreased; therefore, the challenge was to reduce the workload of the overwhelmed radiologist. The central dilemma in radiology was that numerous people were departing from the radiology community and insufficient people were entering the specialty. The article mentioned that “the number of radiology residents declined steadily in the 1990’s, dropping from 4,236 in 1994 to 3,600 in 1999” (McLeod and Montane, 2010). Professionals created a solution by introducing radiologist assistant (RA) as a career. A radiologist assistant was an advanced- level radiographer who extended the capacity of the radiologist in the diagnostic imaging environment therefore enhancing patient care. There was some caution expressed by Baker and Merkulov regarding the innovative occupation …show more content…
When training a radiologist assistant, guidelines were based on the physician and radiologist requirements. To optimize patient care, the radiologist and radiologist assistant worked collaboratively with one another in the medical imaging environment.
Your Reaction to the Article: After reading the article written by McLeod and Montane, I have a enhanced insight of the radiologist assistant. I deem that the radiologist assistant is an enormous asset for the radiologist in the radiology field. The radiologist assistant has many responsibilities to perform when working collaboratively with the radiologist. The RA diminishes the workload and stress for the radiologist and provides observations of the digital images; however, he/she does not interpret the final written report. The role of the radiologist is one that has undergone numerous changes over the years and continues to evolve a rapid pace. Radiologists specialize in the diagnoses of disease through obtaining and interpreting medical images. There are a number of different devices and procedures at the disposal of a radiologist to aid him or her in these diagnoses’. Some images are obtained by using x-ray or other radioactive substances, others through the use of sound waves and the body’s natural magnetism. Another sector of radiology focuses on the treatment of certain diseases using radiation (RSNA). Due to vast clinical work and correlated studies, the radiologist may additionally sub-specialize in various areas. Some of these sub-specialties include breast imaging, cardiovascular, Computed Tomography (CT), diagnostic radiology, emergency, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), musculoskeletal, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, pediatric radiology, radiobiology, and Ultrasound (Schenter). After spending a vast amount of time on research and going to internship at the hospital, I have come to realize that my passion in science has greatly intensified. Furthermore, both experiences helped to shape up my future goals more prominently than before, which is coupled with the fact that I have now established a profound interest in radiology, or rather nuclear medicine.
During that training, I learned about the physician assistant profession from a very talented Navy officer. Observing and talking with him, he educated me on what a Physician Assistant can do. She does discuss the study clinical relevance and recommendation for further studies is stated. Overall the study can be categorised as a good qualitative study with a few pitfalls and also researcher is well informed and organised in conducting a qualitative study, the present article has a little value in radiography and probably further studies in this matter can give different results in relation to radiographer’s communication with the patients. The actual findings are not applicable to Evidence Based Practice.

I was under the assumption that Radiology was primarily X-ray. I couldn’t be more wrong! The RT 100 course, does an outstanding job helping students understand all that is involved within the department. Exploring modalities, equipment, expectations, and organizations, gave us, the students, plenty to contemplate. Material presented, gave me a firm foundation on what I will need to consider, assuming this will be the field of science I choose to pursue. I also feel that if I continue, there will be no surprises on what is expected of me because practically every detail is discussed within the
