People tend to make race a bigger deal than what it is, and in literature race is seen to be even more exaggerated. Even within literary texts we are able to see stratification, degradation and accommodation due to race. Through these texts we are revealed perceptions of race that people had at that time. The portrayal of racism within William Blake’s, “The Little Black Boy” and Rudyard Kipling’s, “The White Man’s Burden” show the racist views that culture had and influenced, especially on worth/purpose, and what was considered moral and immoral.
William Blake's, "The Little Black Boy" depicts racism even though the poem's main message is that divinely everyone is the same and equal despite their race .The opening stanzas that state, "And I am black, but O! my soul is white; White as an angel is the English child: But I am black as if bereav’d of light.", show race degrading views that have been instilled within the little black child, the narrator. These stanzas make racism apparent because it states, "but O! my soul is white; White as an angel is the English child", which makes it seem that since there is some whiteness inside of him because of his soul then he can be angelic, like that of a white child. Not only that, Blake uses skin color to define worth and purpose. Through those stanzas its apparent to see that he associates whiteness as being good and moral, or that of a “light” and black as being the opposite, meaning evil and immoral. Racism is defined as the belief that a race is superior than others. From this definition we are able to see that racism is apparent in literary texts, and in this case, these two poems. Both poems exemplify a racist mindset that people had at that time and a racist mindset they tried forced upon people. Racism in theses texts urged people to be and feel a certain way. Morality didn't really seemed to be a big impact on these mindsets because what they believed they felt was justified. The purpose of this essay is to highlight the issues that Dana, a young African-American writer, witness as an observer through time. In a country full of inequities and discriminations, numerous books were written to depict our unjust societies. One of the many books is an autobiography by Richard Wright. In Black Boy, Wright shares these many life-changing experiences he faced, which include the discovery of racism at a young age, the fights he put up against discriminations and hunger, and finally his decision of moving Northward to a purported better society. Through these experiences which eventually led him to success, Wright tells his readers the cause and effect of racism, and hunger. In a way, the novel The Tortilla Curtain by T.C Boyle illustrates similar experiences. In this book, the lives of two wealthy American citizens and two illegal immigrants collided. Delaney and Kyra were whites living in a pleasurable home, with the constant worry that Mexicans would disturb their peaceful, gated community. Candido and America, on the other hand, came to America to seek job opportunities and a home but ended up camping at a canyon, struggling even for cheapest form of life. They were prevented from any kind of opportunities because they were Mexicans. The differences between the skin colors of these two couples created the hugest gap between the two races. Despite the difficulties American and Candido went through, they never reached success like Wright did. However, something which links these two illegal immigrants and this African American together is their determination to strive for food and a better future. For discouraged minorities struggling in a society plagued with racism, their will to escape poverty often becomes their only motivation to survive, but can also acts as the push they need toward success.
In all three stories, Black Boy, Black Caesar and Malcolm X, there are black male characters who experience growing up in racist societies, and who witness the importance of their extended families. Richard, Tommy and Malcolm respectively, become the men they were through these childhood experiences and these experiences mold them into becoming who they were as adults. Although each of these men experienced both racism and the importance of extended family and the black community, they all turned out to be somewhat different.
In today’s world, people would like to think that racism no longer exists, at least not in the way it use to exist in the past where the people could be lynched or beaten or arrested just for the color of their skin. Racism today are stereotypes based on a person’s skin color, for instance if that person is a Hispanic or a Latino they are probably an illegal immigrant or if they are African American with dark skin they probably have a criminal record. James Baldwin, an African American author born in Harlem, was raised by his violent step-father, David. His father was a lay preacher who hated whites and felt that all whites would be judged as they deserve by a vengeful God. Usually, the father's anger was directed toward his son through violence. Baldwin's history, in part, aids him in his insight of racism within the family. He understands that racists are not born, but rather racist attitudes and behaviors are learned in the early stages of childhood. Native Son by Richard Wright is a heartbreaking story of the racial oppression that spread throughout Chicago and America during the 1930s. Through the experiences of his black protagonist Bigger Thomas, Wright provides valuable insights into racial segregation and the tragic ways in which it affected American society. Throughout the novel, Wright insists that Bigger was not born an aggressive criminal. He is a product of the violence and racism.
