I’m analyzing the effect of racism and white supremacy in the movie “Get Out”. It was recently released to theatre that tells the story of an interracial couple named Chris and Rose and their trip to visit Rose’s family. The plot starts out simple with it just being a weekend out of the city to be a thriller horror story. Once they get there chris notices some strange things happening. At the start it seems like everyone is very uncomfortable around African Americans. Especially at the family’s annual party with all their friends, unknown to chris this party was actually an auction to buy Chris. Not until a little later does he find out that the family is apart is actually the leaders of a secret white supremacy cult that abducts African Americans …show more content…

Right out from the gate of the movie this became very relevant in the movie. On the drive up to Rose’s parent’s house they were in an accident involving hitting a deer, where the police showed up to check out the scene and to question the witnesses. While talking to the couple the officer requested to check Chris’ identification, which to Rose was very strange. She explained that she was the one driving but the officer kept insisting on checking it, which to her surprise Chris was completely fine with doing. In the end Rose stated his right to not have to show identification which angered the cop but ultimately could not enforce his request. Without a doubt this was racial profiling which is illegal. Chris had become so conditioned that he ended up not fighting for his right to refuse because through previous experience he knew what would happen if he didn’t. Racial profiling has been a long standing problem within the United states. Despite it being illegal and ultimately contradictory of the U.S. Constitution it occurs every day. We entrust our safety to Law enforcement but for many racial profiling has led them to live fear due to their skin color, religion, and where they come from. “More than 240 years of slavery and 90 years of legalized racial segregation have led to systemic profiling of blacks in traffic and pedestrian stops.”(Max Cross) Chris is just one of countless victims that has been subjected to this cruelty, the only way …show more content…

A person that fully supports this idea is Barack Obama who expressed his position in an article with CNS News. The first thing he expressed was that even compared to 20 years ago race relations as a whole are great. Racism is deeply rooted in our society, it's deeply rooted in our history. “In recent history though America has made great strides with race relations that give hope to the future being ever brighter to the present.”(Barack Obama) One of his biggest points was that we can’t link what is happening now to what happened 50 years ago. President Obama encouraged individuals that if they have doubt that it is they should go ask their grandparents, parents, and extended family, they’ll tell you that things are better, not good in some places, but better. Things like this don’t just happen all at once but usually steps or even increments. We all need to be vigilant and never give up even when things look down. A big reason why people think race relations are getting worse is because of media. They are always reporting on what is going wrong in the country but only rarely show what is going right. In actuality there is overwhelming evidence to support that race relations are improving every year. There was a Gallup polling over the course of the last 50 years measures the trajectory of how blacks and whites view one another. Since Gallup started recording data on race
