In Rita Williams-Garcia’s book “One Crazy Summer” the theme for it was based around racism. She definitely showed that no matter what race a person, every person is equal. I agree with this theme. A reason I agree with it would be is that a color shouldn’t change your perspective on a person. When I look at a person, I look for personality and not what they look like or what they “should” look like. I also believe that everyone should stand up for what is right. If it’s racial discrimination, sexism, or ageism. Always stand up for the positive side. It has a major impact on this world. Rita Williams-Garcia made huge impact on this world with her Newbery Honor novel One Crazy Summer.
Novia que te vea is about two Jewish girls named Oshinica (Oshi) and Rifke that live in Mexico. The movie paints a picture of the Jewish community in the city of Mexico as it tells the story of the struggle of these two girls to find their identities.
"Deadly Unna" is the story of Garry Blacks realization of racism and discrimination in the port where he lives. When everyone else seems do nothing to prevent the discrimination Blacky a young boy steps up to the plate and has the guts to say no against racism towards the local Aborigines. This quote means that people of color are often targeted in a negative way, which shows that racism and discrimination is something that can be passed down or learned from the media. All through time, the world has been racist and intolerant of people different from themselves. Countless millions have suffered due to the bigotry of people that couldn't understand change or differences among one another. There was a time when any soul that wasn't blue eyed and blonde haired in Germany, anyone with darker skin where immediately classed as inferior and not human. Even now, when you are not aware, racism is still a considerable problem. But sometimes it isn't one person being racist against another, but rather one person being racist against them self. The movie crash shows good examples of how racism against oneself, caused by fear and misunderstanding, is just as malevolent and evil as racism against another person. Fear is what makes people act racist. Farhad is one of many examples in the movie of a person who recognizes his own race and paralyzes himself through his own fear. Farhad believes that since he is Persian he is immediately being persecuted against and cheated. He flips out at the gun shop when the owner was insulting him which just furthers his fear of Americans. After the events on 9/11, which are referenced a lot in the movie, Farhad thinks that anyone who is Middle Eastern isn't welcome in America. Even after the gun shop owner was rude; his shop was destroyed by racist people who hated him. It is this same fear of being cheated because of his race that makes him very untrusting to people he doesn't know. He calls a lock smith to come fix his door because it won't lock. He immediately thinks that Daniel is trying to cheat him and steal money from him just because of his past endeavors.
Attending an integrated school like Handley all my life, I have never opened my eyes to the true brutality of racism. I catch myself rolling my eyes every time someone declares something racist because it seems that it is called for attention. I learn about more racism stories in history classes every year to the point that it no longer influences my opinion of the subject. Racism seems so normal because of the fact that the south has always been a racist place, but my generation did not live through the worst of it. When he found, "that only birds and airplanes could fly&emdash;he lost all interest in himself" (9). The novel Song of Solomon is about an African American man nicknamed Milkman. This novel, by Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison was first published in 1977, shows a great deal of the African American culture, and the discrimination within their culture at the time Song of Solomon takes place. Racism affects everyone on Earth since people are all different. Leslie Marmon Silko wrote an essay called Fences Against Freedom. She was a person of mixed-ancestry who has faced racism very closely from childhood to adulthood. Early on She recalls being rejected from some school pictures, later as an adult, she was pulled over by Border Patrol officers all because of her ancestry. Leslie Marmon Silko points out that there is no race, but human race and; hence, racism should not exist. Silko was raised in her hometown where racism did not exist at all; people judged others by behavior and not by skin color, religion or origin. Nevertheless, coming out of her hometown environment racism was evident. People’s interactions were driven by attending to skin color, creed, ancestry and other biases. Within “Theme for B” by Langston Hughes, Hughes finds some similarities towards another race. "I like to work, read, learn, and understand life…I guess being colored doesn’t make me NOT like the same things other folks like who are other races.”(443). Hughes wants races that separate themselves from others, to realize that they all have at least share one a similar quality as individuals. Coming together as all races can create an outcome of solving economic and social issues. The concept of social justice relates to English Theme B because races such as African Americans and others are not treated and viewed the same compared to whites. Whites tend to themselves as superior to other races. By them feeling superior to other races, each race separates themselves from one another. Hughes wants his professor to see that Blacks also share common likable things as of the professor race as he is white. By Hughes wanting to show his professor this, he hopes to educate his professor into coming together peacefully and helping society out. Whites see themselves as their own individual race and brushes away other races. By finding social justice, races can help create a just, fair, stainable society by accepting and respecting one another beliefs. For my research project I chose the topic of Racism in Children's Literature. I chose this area of study because it is something that bothers me and I know as a child in school I was very uncomfortable with assignments that dealt with racism. One day I would like to make a difference to all the people who are affected by racism. My hypothesis states that if educators are better trained to deal with the delicate subject of racism in children's literature, books would not be banned, yet actually teach the lesson the authors of these books intended for all of us to learn.
Racism is the belief that one race is superior or inferior to another, and that a person’s race determines a person’s personality and traits. There are many situations where people of colour are accused of doing something over a white person because of their skin colour, and that is what happened in “A Summer of Kings” by Han Nolan. More people of colour are wrongfully convicted of crime than white people in today’s society, due to racism still being prominent today. It is still a common issue today, although this novel took place in 1963, which was around the time of the Martin Luther King Jr. movement.
