Between the World and Me Writing Assignment
Coates main message in his novel, Between the World and Me, was to warn his son of the racism that he will experience growing up. Racism is a major idea that is expressed in this memoir. Coates talks about all of the injustices towards African Americans throughout this memoir that are all due to racism. Racism is portrayed by teachers who avoid telling black children about their history or how people are killed because of their complexion. Because of racism, there is now a distinction between races. Coates stated, "race is the child of racism, not the father"(Coates 7). How did African Americans become known as black? The white people didn't know what to call them and they couldn't understand what the African people were saying so the white people judged them by their skin color. Racism has been a problem since then and is still a problem today. It isn't a word to take lightly because it results in the loss of mothers, children, fathers, uncles, and most importantly innocent people. No one deserves to die or be hurt because of the prejudice that exists in our society but it happens. Coates said,"Racism is a visceral experience, that it dislodges brains, blocks airways, rips muscle, extracts organs, cracks bones, breaks teeth. You must never look away from this...great violence, upon the body"(Coates 10). Here, Coates is reminding his son to never forget his history and ancestors and to never forget the struggles he had to deal with because of the color of skin. This history cannot be forgotten or we risk the ability of it occurring again because the future people didn't know. Racism isn't leaving anytime soon and Coates doesn't try to shield his son from the fact, instead, he informs his son so he can make better
