Popular television is no more innocent than news corporations in this day and age. Hollywood, North America’s main source of entertainment, has noticeably latched onto reducing the inclusion of diverse people in different forms of film, thus reducing our respect of different racial groups. It is no secret that white actors are given more roles and opportunities than others. In 2014 out of the 100 top grossing films only 12.5% of the speaking or named characters were black and 4.9% latino. In addition, white actors are always offered complex three dimensional roles, while minorities are forced to accept smaller two dimensional roles should they want to have a job. Consequently, frequent misrepresentation such as this through film over the years has reduced Hollywood’s desire to make good movies with diverse actors. Thus, when teenagers go to the theaters, they notice the lack of inclusion, thereby beginning to agree with the concept that racial diversity in film will not reach high standards, expectations, or success. Moreover, lack of inclusion and good roles for non-white actors has lead to a large wage gap. On average, in Northern America African American women and Native Indian women make 69 cents and 59 cents respectively for every one dollar made by a white man. While Jennifer Lawrence, one of Hollywood's highest paid actresses, cashes in 35 million dollars annually, black actresses like Viola Davis can expect to make significantly less than half that amount. Therefore, hollywood’s stereotype and shortage of various ethnic groups in film has fed the idea that non-white actors do not produce movie hits meaning they will be paid less compared to their white counterparts.
