The Fault in Our Stars, a book about a little girl with cancer? No, it is a story of love, courage, family, coming of age, consciousness, existence, and mortality; it tells the story of two star-crossed teens and their adventure though their fleeting life. It is the story of Hazel Grace Lancaster. Hazel is not your average sixteen year old girl. For starters, she was diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer when she was only thirteen. She says her “lungs weren’t very good at being lungs.” Hazel’s mother forces Hazel to participate in a support group for teenagers with cancer because she believes Hazel is beginning to show signs of depression. There she meets Augustus Waters. He catches her eye -well- they catch one another's eyes. After a few days of constant texting and late night phone calls, Hazel and Augustus (Gus) become flirtatious friends. They talk to each other every day about everything. Augustus and Hazel's good friend Isaac is losing his eye (the only one he has left) so that he can be cancer-free. In the process though, he also loses his girlfriend Monica, who can't "deal" with having a blind boyfriend. Hazel and Augustus are constantly spending time with Isaac. The time they spent brought Hazel and Augustus closer, but it also brought Isaac comfort. Hazel has kept her favorite book a secret, but after some thought Hazel decides to share the book, An Imperial Affliction, with Gus, He reads it and becomes just as passionate about the book as Hazel is, they obsess and share ideas about the unsolved ending together. Augustus somehow gets in touch with Peter Van Houten (the author of An Imperial Affliction) through e-mail. Gus discovers that Houten is living in Amsterdam and convinces Houten to see Hazel and himself. He u... ... middle of paper ... ... Hope Standiford, Natalie. Before I watched 'A Midwife's Tale', a movie created from the diary found by Laurel Ulrich chronicling the life of a woman named Martha Ballard, I thought the women in these times were just housewives and nothing else. I pictured them doing the cleaning and the cooking for their husbands and not being very smart because of the lack of education or them being unable to work. My view on the subject changed however when I watched this specific woman's life and her work.
Several Years after their marriage, cousin Mattie Silver is asked to relieve Zeena, who is constantly ill, of her house hold duties. Ethan finds himself falling in love with Mattie, drawn to her youthful energy, as, “ The pure air, and the long summer hours in the open, gave life and elasticity to Mattie.” Ethan is attracted to Mattie because she is the opposite of Zeena, while Mattie is young, happy, healthy, and beautiful like the summer, Zeena is seven years older than Ethan, bitter, ugly and sickly cold like the winter. Zeena’s strong dominating personality undermines Ethan, while Mattie’s feminine, lively youth makes Ethan fell like a “real man.” Ethan and Mattie finally express their feeling for each other while Zeena is visiting the doctor, and are forced to face the painful reality that their dreams of being together can not come true.
The main character in the book Divergent is a girl named Beatrice. Beatrice is developed throughout the book by having to do things that push her out of her comfort zone. Beatrice was born in the faction of Abnegation, where everything is simple and alike. Abnegation values selflessness, but Beatrice doesn’t feel like she is selfless. She decides to change to the faction of Dauntless, who values courage. Beatrice has to do things like jump off trains, and fight people to show she is courageous. She decides to start going byTris, because Beatrice won’t fit in with the dauntless. When Beatrice makes the decision to be a dauntless she says “My fathers eyes burn into mine with a look of accusation’. This is because it was selfish of her to choose to be a Dauntless. Beatrice doesn’t like to be told what to do, and will stand up for what she thinks is right. Beatrice tries to be kind to others, but sometimes she just can’t control herself.
...or George and Augustus cares for Hazel. George cares for Lennie and Hazel cares for Augustus.
When was the last time you felt certain of your impending future? For cancer survivor, Hazel, the answer is never. In The Fault in Our Stars, sixteen year old Hazel lives with cancer and attends a support group where she meets Augustus, another young cancer survivor who changes her outlook on the world forever. He takes Hazel on an adventure of love, friendship, and pain, and together they yearn to have authority over their uncontrollable fates. Isaac, a blind teenager, and Hazel’s mom also play significant roles in her life. Similarly, in Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie strengthen their friendship through love and suffering, and they learn that humans have some control over their end destination. At the ranch they work at, Lennie and George have to choose how they want their lives to turn out, which directly impacts the choices they will make regarding the future. While John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men both establish motifs of friendship, games, and hands, they convey different universal ideas about humanity. In particular, Green suggests that humans cannot always manipulate every situation, while Steinbeck focuses on the ideas that men often have a choice in their destinies.
Hazel is a fiery little girl. She is strong-willed and openly opinionated, and believes that “when you got something on your mind, speak up and let the chips fall where they may” (Bambara 297). Although she is still very young, she has principles of what she believes to be wrong and right. She believes that her Hunca Bubba is not who he used to be since he has fallen in love and become engaged. Hazel feels betrayed by Hunca Bubba because when she was a little girl, he promised he would marry her. He is no longer Hazel’s Hunca Bubba; now, he is Jefferson Winston Vale. Hazel is befuddled with the entire situation. She is heartbroken that he seems to undermine the importance of his promise, by saying, “I was just teasin’” (298). He seems to be completely unaware that by breaking this promise, he has distorted Hazel’s entire outlook on trustworthiness. Hazel expresses her concrete belief that people should follow through with what they say, when she is commenting on the incident at the movie theater, “ I mean even gangsters in the movies say My word is my bond. So don’t nobody get away with nothing far as...
Cancer limits her chances at being a normal teenage girl with a normal life. As reluctant as she was to go to support group, she meets other teenagers going through the same stuff. Hazel gets to experience the flirting, adventure, and excitement of teenage life. She allows herself to be immature and careless. Gus’s death reminds her how unfair the world is but she doesn't regret her choices. In her eulogy at the funeral, Hazel says “I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.” (Green 260). This quote shows she doesn't regret becoming close to him; even with the unfortunate fallout she’s thankful for the time and experiences. Hazel matures because of her relationship. She got the chance at “normal” and love. Caring for someone with cancer helped her mature.
The book uses fictional documents, such as book excerpts, news reports, and hearing transcripts, to frame the story of Carietta "Carrie" White, a 17-year-old girl from Chamberlain, Maine. Carrie's mother, Margaret, a fanatical Christian fundamentalist, has a vindictive and unstable personality, and over the years has ruled Carrie with an iron rod and repeated threats of damnation, as well as occasional physical abuse. Carrie does not fare much better at her school where her frumpy looks, lack of friends and lack of popularity with boys make her the butt of ridicule, embarrassment, and public humiliation by her fellow teenage peers.
The author of Divergent ,Veronica Roth, analyzes as to why people act and thinks the way they do and to why they defy the system. She uses the psychological aspects of behavior genetics, neuroscience, and social cultural. The norms are what allow societies to thrive, without the norms society would go into chaos as no one would be able to be kept in line. Divergent follows the life of a young girl who is faced with the choice to decide in which faction to spend the rest of her days. Unlike her peers and fellow city, she is not in the norm she can not be just one personal trait nor could she be manipulated through simulations. In this utopian society everyone is classified into five factions based on mental state; However, Beatrice Prior’s mental state can not be classified into just one faction as her brain structure and genetics are not damaged, like the vast majority of the city.
The reader sees how detached Hazel appears to be from other women in this story. She can’t understand why they are allowed to be sad but when she appears sad she’s told to smile and how nobody wants to hear about other’s troubles. In fact there are only three women who Hazel holds conversations with at all in the story. The first is her neighbor who lives across the hall while she is married to Herbie. In Mrs. Martin she finds herself an escape from her trapped and unfulfilling life. They drink and play cards with a group of men referred to as “the boys.” This appears to be the only real friend she has through the entire story although they have a falling out based on the men in their life. The next woman is Mrs. Miller whom upon an exchange in the bathroom leads Hazel to the pills she will use in her suicide attempt. The final character is Nettie the colored maid who nurses Hazel back to life after she tries to take her own life. This appears to be a way for the author to explain the tension among women at this time. All the women in Parker’s story are trying to maintain the appearance that society has allotted them. Were some might think this would draw women together in fact made them further separated because they were all afraid of showing the crack in their own “good sport” personalities.
This is a great story Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich has everything you would ever want in a novel. When first just touching the novel my eyes were singed by the title and short summary. In short words I assumed that I would utterly despise the book. As I read the book it became more than enjoyable with the non-subtle sexual references, cursing, and violence. Ten Big Ones, Ten Grand, Ten Thousand Buck is what you could win as the hero at the end of the story. The theme is gang related crime will indubitably fall. The star of the novel is Stephanie Plum, resident of Trenton, NJ. She is a bounty hunter not armature but also not professional. She is deciding on lunch at the deli or sub shop, while at the shop Plum and her partner slash file clerk, they see the infamous Red Devil robbing a deli mart and attempting to throw an alcohol bomb. Plum goes near halfway though book looking for him until she finds out that there is a hit on her. The hit is not for money but for power for the Junkman originally based in LA but has moved to Trenton to take a place of power in Slayer one of the two top gangs in the city. Her: over protective, off and on boy friend does everything he can to keep. Throughout the book while Plum hunted for the Devil and she was also hunted, Stephanie took her grandmother and Lula the file clerk to pick up people like Sally a drag queen, performer, government worker. Sally became a more important character than thought after. He’s stays to plan her sister wedding, but he is the hero after pushing through with his school bus and Uzi killing a large amount of Slayer.
The novel starts off with a young 16-year-old girl named Hazel with thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. She serves as the witty narrator and makes death seem like nothing to be afraid of. Augustus Waters, a 17-year-old formally diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, is in remission but has lost a leg due to his cancer. From the beginning, John Green makes readers feel suspenseful as to when or if Hazel is going to die and break Augustus’s heart. But when Augustus goes back into remission, a twist is added to the story and Hazel becomes the healthier partner in their relationship. Hazel and Augustus’s love is put to the test as Augustus’s health deteriorates more and more each day. Readers are sitting on the edge of their seats, as they must wait to see what the fate of this courageous couple will be.
This dramatic romantic love story focuses on the two main characters, Hazel Grace and Augustus’, relationship. This isn’t an ordinary high school love story. The two companions first met during a cancer patient support group. Of course Hazel’s mother had to pressure her into going and talking about her terminal thyroid cancer. Nevertheless going definitely paid off when she caught glimpse of the gorgeous eyes of Augustus a charming teenage boy who lost a leg due to bone cancer. Although he is cancer free when she meets him, his cancer returns a few months later towards the end of the story.
The stories setting takes place in Western Colorado. In Western Colorado in a home of a retired nurse named Annie is where the whole story takes place. Annie's home is a two story log cabin out in the middle of nowhere. The closest neighbors are miles away. It takes place in the middle of winter snow storms.
