Race and Ethnicity
Race refers to a group of people having differences and similarities based on their biological traits making people treat them differently based on these traits. Ethnicity, on the other hand, is a shared cultural practice for a distinct set of the group. The most characteristic features of ethnicity are shared ancestry, language, religion, and mode of dressing. My understanding of race and ethnicity has so far changed in that the two should be treated differently as opposed to my earlier version which was that race and ethnicity have the same meaning. This implies that they are just labels that allow people to be grouped. I am of the opinion that anyone can fall for anyone else regardless of their sex. This is based on my understanding of sexual orientation. It allows people to interact freely and express their feelings towards each other without prejudice. People should therefore not be treated differently based on their sexual orientation or sexual constructs within the society. For instance, a woman of a different color may experience sexism in her workplace due to racism. Although in most cases intersectionality is always attached to women, a person from any gender may be affected by the phenomena of the overlapping minority status.
Understanding intersectionality is important in that it helps in identifying the areas where the oppression is hence allowing the discussion on how to solve the issues. It gives people the avenue of advocating for their issues and in most case, women are always the affected group when it comes to inequality. To this end, women of color still experience a lot of discrimination and violence when compared to the average white heterosexual women. Hence it is important that intersectionality can help in advocating for the rights of women of color.
Understanding intersectionality will ensure that the discrimination which can be experienced in classrooms are put to an end whereby it will allow teachers to treat both race and gender equally without discrimination or prejudice. In addition, it will bring equality based on the services that were being given to students in a classroom thereby creating a friendly environment for learning.
Omi & Winant, Bonilla-Silva, and Loveman all have different approach in understanding the distinction between ethnicity and race. Omi & Winant and Bonilla-silva all made a distinction between ethnicity and race, and study race through the lens of power relation, while Loveman argued that it is important to study these two side by side. DuBois articulate blackness as both race and ethnicity with the approach of “Double-Consciousness”.
Intersectionality can be seen in many situations across the world. Oftentimes it is related to assimilation and adaptation, however these situations are not always seen as a force to completely change one’s views. In Yvonne Ridley’s essay How I Came to Love the Veil she explains how her “devastating” situation of captivity by the Taliban altered her views. In Sandra Cisneros’ essay Only Daughter she also explains how intersectionality lead her to believe that her father would no longer accept her. Race has no biological meaning. There is only one human race; there are no subspecies, no single defining characteristic, traits, or even gene, separates one “race” from another. Instead of being a biological concept, race is a social construct, and a relatively modern one at that. It was created to give light-skinned Europeans an advantage by making the white race superior and all others inferior. Throughout its history, the concept of race has served this purpose well.
Through research of DNA samples, scientists have been able to declare that race is not biologically constructed due to the similarities between human genes. Nevertheless, in reality, people still emphasized on biological aspects such as skin color, or hair texture to categorize others into different races. This in turn, denied the true identity of race, which it is culturally constructed. Ethnicity, by definition is also culturally constructed, therefore it greatly resemble race. There is no real clear line to distinct the two.
In “Colorblind Intersectionality,” Devon W. Carbado explains that often intersectionality focuses “squarely on Black women or on race and gender,” (Carbado 814). However, scholars have mobilized intersectionality to “multiple axes of difference—class, sexual orientation, nation, citizenship, immigration status, disability, and religion (not just race and gender),” (Carbado 815). In order for Carbado to expand and make of the word “intersectionality” more inclusive, he introduces two concepts, colorblind intersectionality and gender-blind intersectionality. Intersectionality is a term used to describe a situation whereby an individual has multiple identities and as result, the person feels that he or she doesn’t belong to one community or another. Because of the many conflicts in an individual’s identities, he or she could be a victim of multiple threats of discrimination (Williams, 2017). To give an example, a black transgender woman could be discriminated in the workplace because of being black and also because she is transgender. One way to distinguish a person from the billions of other people in the world is by looking into their ethnicity. Ethnicity may be simplified as just a person’s origin, but arguments have been made that there is more to the world. Joane Nagel, author of “Constructing Ethnicity”, writes about what makes up the word ethnicity along with its uses in social and political spectrums. Nicholosa Mohr also writes about the different perspective of ethnicity and the way people embrace them in her writing “The English Lesson”. From reading both texts, it is possible to make the argument that Mohr’s text supports Nagel’s ideas on the fluidity and situational nature of ethnic identity in the United States. Mohr finds themes from different scenarios in the classroom that can perhaps correspond to many of Nagel’s ideas and theories about ethnicity.
Broadly speaking, race is seen or is assumed to be a biologically driven set of boundaries that group and categorize people according to phenotypical similarities (e.g. skin color) (Pinderhughes, 1989; Root, 1998). The categorical classification of race can be traced back to the 16th century Linnaen system of human “races” where each race was believed to be of a distinct type or subspecies that included separate gene pools (Omi & Winant, 1994; Spickard, 1992; Smedley & Smedley, 2005). Race in the U.S. initially began as a general categorizing term, interchangeable with such terms as “type” or “species”. Over time, race began to morph into a term specifically referring to groups of people living in North America (i.e. European “Whites”, Native American “Indians”, and African “Negroes”). Race represented a new way to illustrate human difference as well as a way to socially structure society (Smedley & Smedley, 2005).
Intersectionality also known as intersectional theory originally was a theory which was encoded in feminism.
