Russian Culture
Russia culture is very different from any other culture that I have ever read about. This is a country that is dominated by males. Males actually run the county of Russia. The men are so dominated that every Russian women dream is to be married and have a family with these men. Russia is known for its poor society. In the book Sakharov he mentions how he moved from one place to another. He first was in Moscow’s larger apartments with his family. In this apartment there were six families. With thin the six families they had to share the kitchen and the bathroom. Then he states that he moved into a very old house and in this old house there was a leaking ceiling. With in this house there were still six families that shared everything. (Sakharov 24-25)
In Russia there is a very high divorce rate. The divorce rate is high because of the prostitution and getting married just for religious purposes. My couples get married in Russia at a young age. Getting married at a young age is not a good idea in Russia or nowhere. Because of the prostitution rate in Russia it is bringing the abortion rate also. Just about every woman in Russia has had at least five abortions. The reason why woman get abortions is because they were either messing around with some one else man or they are married and got pregnant and neither of the spouses want the child.
Russia has a high crime rate also. Their crime rate is so high that if you were to go to the store like the grocery store, when you walk in the store u have to lock your things up in a locker and shop. When you got through shopping then you were to pick up your stuff out of your locker. The whole time that you are shopping there are people watching your every move. The reason why the crime rate is so high is because they work hard to get paid a little amount of money. Russia’s unemployment rate is very high. There are not enough jobs in Russia for everyone to have a job. For example if you were to get a job at a fast food restaurant, you were only getting paid a little or nothing an hour and that’s not even close to minuan wage in America.
Historically, Russia has always been a country of perplexing dualities. The reality of Dual Russia, the separation of the official culture from that of the common people, persisted after the Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War. The Czarist Russia was at once modernized and backward: St. Petersburg and Moscow stood as the highly developed industrial centers of the country and two of the capitals of Europe, yet the overwhelming majority of the population were subsistent farms who lived on mir; French was the official language and the elites were highly literate, yet 82% of the populati...
It is thought that the Russian Mafia has existed in Russia for several centuries. When Russia was still the Soviet Union, corruption began to develop because of the Communist era. Citizens were so desperate to pay bills, buy groceries, and more; that they began to steal from one another, as well as get into forms of organized crime. As the Soviet Union fell Russian organized crime was unleashed into the world, from Russia to the U.S and more. Russian organized crime groups commit crimes such as; extortion, white captive trafficking, automobile theft, counterfeiting, hostage taking, prostitution, weapons smuggling, murder, drug trafficking, and fraud.
The Effect of the Bolshevik Rule on Russian Culture Bolshevik cultural policy was based on spreading their values to the population. They attempted to promote equality to create a classless society. In addition to removing class differences they attempted to give equal status to women and to young people. In order to encourage women to work state funded crèches were established and laws passed to give women parity in terms of pay with men. The state tried to destroy the old concept of families by legalising abortion and enabling people to obtain divorces much more simply.
In terms of employment, the former Soviet Union had the largest percentage of women in the labor force than any other comparative society. This still remains the case in the present day Russia. Unemployed women in Russia will be quickly employed. They have a very high success rate of reemploying women if they were to lose their jobs. “Compared to Western women, although Russian women have a much higher representation in law, medicine and engineering as well as in the skilled trades, such as metalworking and construction,...
The Bolsheviks physically mistreated them in several ways; however, their excuse was that it was always for their own good and protection, even though the family knew otherwise. A perfect example of this is the ridiculous conditions they were told to live in. They cannot even open a single window even though it is stuffy and smells. “For two weeks the former Emperor has been asking- just a single window, just a little fresh air…” (Alexander 8). Not being allowed to have single window open in the middle of summer with sweaty and smelly armed guards makes living conditions very unbearable for the family. They cannot even open a window to relieve themselves in the slightest, even though no harm could have come to them. The Romanovs were not permitted any contact with the outside world at all. They have no idea about and were unaware of what was happening in their country, with their friends, or even the weather. “Weeks earlier, the Bolsheviki had painted the thermometer with lime as well…” (63). The Bolsheviks are so cruel and demanding that the family could not even know what the weather was directly outside of them. They have almost none of their original ...
Several Russian authors employed a genre of literature called the society tale in order to critique traditions and expectations of Russian high society such as the concept of marriage. These society tales were very popular in Russia in the 1830s and included a mix of formats and styles. These tales examined different aspects of high society, such as power and money, and lead many authors to question the role of women in society. Authors such as Karolina Pavlova and Evdokia Rostopchina explored the role of marriage in society and the consequences of marriage as a whole. The concept of marriage in Russian society is discussed and judged in both A Double Life and Rank and Money. Whether a character marries
...men are not discriminated anymore. Women are not expected to be just a plain housewife, taking care of her husband and children. They get high education and nice jobs with promising salaries. But, some women are still treated the same way they were treated in 1940’s. Paternalistic tradition still occurs in Russia along with other countries. This confirms that there are some similarities and differences for treating women in today’s society compared to the early days.
This story may seem solely comedic, but within it is a darker tale of a Russia where, in the current times and those prior to it, social rank and position were key. ...
Russia is the largest country in the world in terms of area and the world’s ninth most populous nation with 143 million people. Due to its large area the country is situated in 4 different climate zones and has vast natural resources. Russia also has a unique geographic position with the 14 border countries, bounded by 3 out of 4 world oceans, facilitating the build of international and domestic supply chains. Russia is one of the most technologically advanced economies in the world with a very big and well-educated work force and one of the largest consumer markets. The Russian economy is commodity-driven and is the world’s largest producer of oil (12%), natural gas (18%) and nickel (20%).
In the mid-nineteenth century Western Europe had a firm grasp on Russian society and culture. At that time, Western Europe called for Modernization, which places a heavy emphasis on wealth and social maneuverability often leading to increased Economic Materialism and Egoism. Both Leo Tolstoy, in his work, The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, in his work, Notes from Underground criticize Modernization and its effects as a danger to society. At the same time, both seem to advocate for moral and intellectual altruism often portrayed through the peasant class and as a byproduct of physical and emotional suffering. The two novels differ in their protagonists. Tolstoy’s protagonist, Ivan Ilyich, learns from his experience and is redeemed whereas Dostoyevsky’s protagonist, the Underground Man, is not. In the end, it is up to the reader to decide which author is more effective in presenting an altruistic hero and conveying the message at hand.
. Armenians are patriarchal in nature, and typically have the man of the household serve as the breadwinner. Mothers are usually seen as caring and nurturing, while fathers are typically viewed more as authoritative and disciplinarian (Bakalian, 1993). While men are seen as the breadwinners and are usually the sole decision makers, women are traditionally expected to be wives and mothers, and are responsible for maintaining and transmitting family traditions (Minnassian, 2010). Armenians are generally considered a collectivistic culture, with strong family values at their cornerstone. Due to a longstanding history of oppression, as a collective, Armenians tend to be weary of others and are usually suspicious when seeking services. As an extension
Families were broken apart because of the gulags. Husbands and wives. Mothers and fathers were separated from their kids. This was all part of striking fear into the communities of the Soviet Union. Here’s an example. Maria Tchebotareva had to feed four starving children. The reason is because in the early 1930’s there was a famine. She stole three pounds of rye from a collected field. (it was her field to start but it was taken away during the period of collectivization which is when the Soviet Union collected every individuals farms.) She served until 1945 and then had to live in exile until 1956. When she came back home she was never able to find he kids the rest of her life (What Were Their Crimes?, n.d.). This happened all over the Soviet Union. This cause multiple children to be without parents. People always say that the reason why there is so much crime in the United States is because they don’t have a father or mother figure. In the Soviet Union they take away the parent figure so this causes multiple problems. One problem come for taking the parents away from the kids is that the child doesn’t know what is going on. They don’t receive love or nurture. Which cause a problem because they don’t know how to act around people. They don’t know how to show love because they were never given
Russia had been defeated in all except the war with Turkey and its government and economy had the scars to prove it. A severe lack of food and poor living conditions amongst the peasant population led firstly to strikes and quickly escalated to violent riots. Tsar Nicholas II ruled Russia with an iron hand while much of Europe was moving away from the monarchical system of rule. All lands were owned by the Tsar’s family and Nobel land lords, while the factories and industrial complexes were owned by the capitalists’. There were no unions or labour laws and the justice system had made almost all other laws in favour of the ruling elite.
Even with Russia’s vast amount of land only, a small percentage can produce crops, as the rainfall is inconsistent and the northern tundra are not able to support growth. None the less fishing industry, livestock, and grain have been a staple for feeding the Russian people. Due to this family close, and extended have banded together to take care of each other on a larger scale. Another issue Russia faces is the rise of insurgency and could potentially destabilize the region, by Islamist. There is also the unrest and intervention in the Ukraine. Civil consideration
The era in Russia is perfectly depicted in Dead Souls. The reason why the book is called Dead Souls is Interesting, and also tell about how people though in Russia in the 19th century. Dead Souls is talking about the serfs, who souls are considered owned by their master, and the master has to pay taxes on the serf. However, the Russian authorities do censeces very infrequently, so the serfs who die are considered “Dead souls” because there master still has to pay taxes on them because a new census was not completed, so they are still considered alive by the Russian authorities. The plot involves the main character going around buying these “Dead Souls” in order to appear rich and thus get richer by doing this. This title, however unimportant it sounds, gives background on what Russia was really like in the 19th century. There is clear separati...
