R.J. Palacio “Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us. On occasion to greatness.” (“R.J. Palacio.” Goodreads...) Authors write novels and stories to portray life and what humans do. R.J. Palacio is an author who expresses her feelings on attitude and actions that change people. Palacio was born on July 13, 1963 in Queens New York, New York. Her zodiac sign is cancer. Cancers are characterized by overwhelming optimism paired with intuitive empathy. This is shown throughout her books and different speeches she does around the United States. As a kid she loved the Judy Blume series. One of these books was the book she loved reading the most at the age of seven. …show more content…
When she was thirteen she started collecting quotes and sayings that inspired her. There were other influences besides quotes and the Judy Blume series. Her mother was one of them. Her mother always told her, “Remember you are good writer.” (Hodson, Heather…) Her mother also shielded her from things led to the type of mother in her books. Her husband also was influential as he is a publisher in children’s books. Together they have two sons and along with them she has two dogs. Before becoming an author, Palacio was a graphic designer, and a book jacket designer.
She spent twenty years in publishing as a creative director. Palacio first started writing in autumn of 2007. In latin tradition she also took her mother’s name as her pen name (Hodson, Heather…). Being busy during the day she wrote most of her books in the middle of the night. Palacio wanted to wait for the perfect time to write a book (Hodson, Heather…). She writes her stories for Random House, her publisher. Palacio has written a total of 10 books. She relates some traits or form of the character to people she has encountered (“R.J. Palacio.” R.J. Palacio...). Palacio writes her books to have strong anti-bullying. She is mainly concerned about social isolation, ridicule, and abandonment of friends. She also uses multiple perspectives based on something the author of her favorite book “As I Lay Dying,” by William Faulkner, did (“R.J. Palacio.” R.J. Palacio…). Palacio stated that she had three basic rules. First, all characters must propel the story forward. Second, all the characters had to enhance the main character. The last rule that she had set for herself was that the voices of the story grow of change by knowing the main character and their personality (“R.J. Palacio.” R.J. Palacio…). She loves to stay in touch with her fans. She stays connected via Twitter, Blogs, hashtags, emails, and Skype. Palacio also travels the country speaking to children. She writes for kids, but wants her stories to touch adults (R.J. Palacio. Penguin…). She also believes that the modern parent needs to take a stronger stand (Hodson, Heather…). In that case, Palacio started a anti-bullying program. She hopes kids will come away knowing they are noticed being good or bad (“R.J. Palacio.” R.J. Palacio…). Over 100 schools have chosen, Wonder, to be in their One Read Program. She has sold over 1 million copies, including 37 countries (“R.J. Palacio’s ‘Wonder’...). Palacio has
also won various awards for her writing. In 2012, the London Times said she was in the top 100 people to watch give speeches. In 2013, Longate announced making her first book, “Wonder,” into a film. Palacio told many sources that her family has been the biggest part of her first book (Magill…). Palacio also told NPR’s Michelle Norris that the book was inspired by a real-life encounter with her own kids. Palacio was at an ice cream store in New York. Her oldest son was getting shakes in the store while the other one was sitting down outside. Palacio’s son was looking at a girl that was sitting a couple feet away. The little girl approached him hoping to make a new friend, however Palacio’s son broke into tears when the little boy was feared by the girl’s deformed face. She had Treacher-Collins Syndrome. Treacher-Collins syndrome is a condition that affects the development of bones and other tissues of the face. This was normal for Palacio, because she had previously spent a few weeks studying and researching genetics. In total embarrassment, she grabbed her kids and left. When she was traveling home she kept thinking about the situation and what had all happened. When Palacio was in the car a song called “Wonder,” came on over the radio. From that point something clicked in her brain. Later that night she began to write a book. This first book she wrote was about this story, and in fact it is reflected in the chapter called Carvel. R.J. Palacio was given an opportunity to reflect the minds of young children into a world famous book that explains what it is like to be different than everybody else. Many people have influenced her and or she influenced them. There is no better way to describe R.J. Palacio than to say she is an influential person, a role model, and an empathetic mentor.

As every well-read person knows, the background in which you grow up plays a huge role in how you write and your opinions. Fuller grew up with a very strict education, learning multiple classic languages before she was eight years old. Fern grew up with writers all throughout her family and had a traditional education and saw first hand the iniquities of what hard-working had to contend with. Through close analysis of their work, a reader can quickly find the connections between their tone, style, content, and purpose and their history of their lives and their educational upbringing.
She was a writer who suffered from Lupus. Her father died of the same illness when she was thirteen. Her Catholic beliefs reflected in her work, as well as the implementation of violence and darkness ironically used in her short stories. The titles in the stories give the readers an idea that the stories are the opposite of what the titles really state. She uses metaphors and similes to describe the characters and the settings of the stories. Each story relates to the darkness of the characters: people with racial prejudice, ignorance, and evil. Each story ends in a tragedy. The use of irony allows her to transport a meaning to each story that is not easy for readers to understand.

Dr. Seuss once wrote that “today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you”, but what makes a person unique? A person’s character is what makes them who they are. It is the foundation of personality, words, and actions, and it grows with every trial in an individual’s life. Personal struggle develops character because it brings to light what a person will and will not do, allows them to find or develop talents, it creates an opportunity to alter their mindset, and the experience gained will stay with the individual forever.
To create living people should always be the goal in literature. It is how a writer can illuminate a new facet of existence and can only be achieved through the use of a sympathetic imagination. Hemingway erred however, when he argued, “A character is a caricature” (153). A caricature may be a character sometimes, but it may also be a fully realized and living person at others. As in Watchmen, when a caricature lives, it can be an extremely powerful thing.

Novels of the 1950s such as Crucifixus Exam by Walter M. Miller, Jr. had a very complex style of writing that was almost poetic and often focused on something small with very much detail. On the other hand later writings like James Patterson’s Maximum Ride have almost all child characters who are quite relatable for anyone 10-17 years old. The writing is also very young, straightforward, and direct to the readers for a much more “kid-like” reading experie...
