1. When I first came into this class, I did not fully understand genre and what exactly it meant. I was aware that genre exists in music, such as rap, hip hop, R&B, classical, rock, etc. Going off of my knowledge on that, I thought that genre was similar to a subcategory. I thought that genre was the smaller parts that construct a bigger idea. Other than that, I did not have a really clear definition of genre.
2. Now, I define genre differently than before this class. Genre can exist in just about every aspect of society. Genre is a category that arises from artistic, musical, media, or literature compositions that have similarities. Genre exists in media, social media, television, movies, music, stories/literature, etc. Genre can exist in

pop culture and current events. Some examples of genre include music genres. Some music genres are country, rap, hip hop, and rock. Movie genres include comedy, horror, romantic, thriller, action, romantic comedy, and much more. Literature genres include fiction, comedy, non-fiction, horror, realistic fiction, and romance. 3.
My idea of genre has certainly changed by completing our three major projects. The first paper enriched my idea about genre and taught me a significant amount of information on how genre is formed, what exactly it is, and what it entails. In the first paper, I wrote about R&B music and how it can negatively reflect women and create sexual stereotypes. Something that has really stuck with me about genre is an activity that we did at the very beginning of the semester. In class, we watched several music videos on YouTube and wrote all of the different genres that existed in the music video. This taught me different aspect of genre, and really showed me how music obtains various genres. In paper 2, I did research on eating disorders and how society can influence and encourage them. This paper taught me a lot about society and the impacts of social media. I learned a remarkable amount of information about genre in this paper, along with paper 3. I learned that genre can exist in so many aspects, and it does not just exist in music. In paper 3, I created three genre compositions about eating disorders and creating a positive body image. I used a Twitter, Prezi, and a brochure as my compositions for the genre of eating disorders. Paper 3 taught me how eating disorders can exist in society and the various harms they include. The three major projects have changed my idea and image of genre, because prior I did not know that genre could exist in so many different forms. Genres can exist in music, social media, media, society, literature, television, stories, and much more. I really just thought of genre as music genres before this class, but now I realize that genre can include basically anything in
society. 4. In-class exercises that influenced my understanding of genre was when we analyzed the various music videos on YouTube at the beginning of the semester. We watched country music videos created both by men and by women. From there, we concluded the differences and how this genre of music highly sexualizes women and relationships. This activity taught me that genre is relevant in any form, and so many things can contribute to and make up genre. I would also say that project 1 and 3 taught me the most about genre. Project 1 was my first experience learning about genre, so it really influenced my opinion and understanding of what genre is and how it occurs in just about every aspect of society. Project 3 taught me how to create genres through compositions that exist either online, electronically, or on paper. Also, it made me realize that we can create genre in so many distinct forms with the increase of technology and social media. 5. In the future, I will apply my knowledge learned about genre in this class. I will apply my knowledge of genre to my assignments, studying methods, and papers. For example, in my art class we have to create a final project of 5 artists that have similar subject matter and themes. With my new knowledge on genre, I can use it in my project to explain how each artist creates their own genre(s) in their artwork and how the genre influences their subject matter. I will also apply my knowledge to other classes through looking at my material with a different perspective and using genre to help me understand subjects better. For example, if I do not understand something, I can try to break it down and understand it better by applying the various genres that exist in the subject. I really learned a vast amount of information in this class, and I now know how to define genre!
Last but not least, Genre is a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, and technique. Aside from the character structure the genre can be compared and contrasted in these two movies. The movie Bicycle Thieves genre is a mystery/crime and Big Deal on Madonna Street is a comedy. Even though the two movies are two different genres they do share similar set ups. Both movies are about the social issues of Italy but Big Deal on Madonna Street amplifies and spoofs Italians

With the Multi Genre papers, I chose to write about baseball, the history of it, how it works, and how big it still is today. I actually used to play baseball when I was around 13-14 years old, and that’s how I was able to connect with it. I've actually learned more about baseball after doing some of these papers, especially about Jackie Robinson.
That phone call to your mom, and even that text you send your friends. We come across genre in basketball too. You have the scouting report, it shows the other team’s plays, their players and what they do. It keeps the coaches and players on the same page, it also helps the coach to know what to do in certain situations. Another form of genre in basketball is the playbook. The playbook consist of offensive plays and defensive plays that your team runs. It’s important because without the playbook it would take more time to learn the plays, players would be confused, and with the lack of time mistakes can be made that can cost the team the
The genre of the film is how we know what kind of film it is. Genre is a French word which literally means type; it shows what category a film comes under. There are certain factors in a genre which will identify it. Things like settings, characters and themes can all be similar in one specific genre.
The first type of genre that will be examined is the news article genre. This is the primary genre that is used to relay news and events about the...
At the start of this class, I did not think that I would learn as much as I did. Just last night my wife and I were watching “The Voice” and someone was singing “I’ll Be There.” I told her that was a song by The Jackson 5. She disagreed with me and told me that Mariah Carey had sung that song. I looked it up and we were both right. I went onto tell her that I was more right because The Jackson 5 sang it first. It got me thinking about this class and how I catch myself thinking about the history of songs whenever I hear them on the radio or in a movie.
After a rough day, when people come home from work, they need something that will make their day better. Any music helps to release people from their everyday lives. For some it is like going on vacation, or a home away from home. It not only gives strength, hope, but it helps relieves stress. Music is essential to everyday life in this world. People have become what they listen to. “The most important requirement of popular music is that is must appeal to a large number of people” (Yudkin 284). Pop country music is one of America’s favorite genre’s to listen to. Its roots began in rural America. Looking back, country music has drastically evolved and changed moving away from its original sound. Pop country is what has taken over much of the country genre. The joining of country and pop began in
The genre i have studied is musicals. A musical is a film which has musical performances from the actors to express their feelings. The films from this genre that i studied are 'Singin' In The Rain' (Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, 1952), 'Grease' (Randall Kleiser, 1978) and 'Hairspray'(Adam Shankman, 2007). I studied two characteristics of the musical genre (Breaking Into Song And Dance and The Grande Finale) that are shown in the films studied. The identifying characteristics of 'Breaking Into Song And Dance' and 'The Grande Finale" are always seen in musicals. These characteristics are expected to be in a musical by the audience and ultimately make a musical what we predict it to be, a film that expresses characters feelings through song while
A genre is a type or category of film (or other work of art) that can be easily identified by specific elements of its plot, setting, mise en scène, character types, or style. (Goodykoontz, 2014) The gangster film is a sub-genre of the broader genre of crime film. A genre main objective is to classify the depiction of entertainment. The genre of my movie is a gangster film. My movie I chose was Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma. An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami. (Scarface, 1983a)
... been changing in movies and television to adjust for everything feeling “familiar”. Horror-spoof flicks and action, romance, comedy movies have been made because sticking to one genre would now bore people and would result in them walking out or changing the channel. The only question left is what will happen once people are bored with genre mixing. In other words, when the “strange” becomes “familiar” what will satisfy people’s appetite for entertainment? Maybe the emergence of the perfect genre will take over the market by stealing the best parts of all music and combining it to please everyone. The Internet Age is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to music. A person is able to create masterpieces by using other people’s music and blending various genres but one must not forget the Internet is what has caused people to crave creativity in the first place.
Though I have only listed a few genres they expand into multiple other styles of music. Musicians are inspired by other musicians and everyone else around them. Creating music is another way of building connections and developing your own unique sound. It is up to you on how you will express your creative approach to music and how others will be influence by it.
It's difficult to pin down music into one genre when the basics of the music is constantly changing. Is it experimental when the musician is trying new things, and being creatively challenged to provide electronic music that hasn't been heard before while mixing it with melodies? Every musician wants to push the boundaries and come up with original music that people will love. Even DJs are using electronics and sound to produce music nobody has heard before.
For a better description of popular music, according to the Oxford English Dictionary Online, popular is “prevalent or current among the general public.” Popular music is the genre that is on the radio, playing in people’s cars, and at their homes. It is the feel good sound that brings everyone together to dance, play, and sing. However, it is ever changing and with that begins a timeline, to understand the growth of music.
