When Rory goes off to college, we are met with the uncertainty of how their relationship will shift, but are comforted with the fact that Rory calls Lorelai back to school to stay the night in her dorm room because she didn’t want to be apart. In fact, in some instances Rory steps into the motherly role for Lorelai because of her estranged relationship with Emily Gilmore—Lorelai’s mother. In the early seasons Lorelai is engaged to a man named Max Medina, but when she calls the wedding off abruptly and wants to go on a road trip instead, Rory tries to reason with Lorelai and get the truth out of her. There is always something new going on between Lorelai and Rory, and the way that they don’t act like there is a hierarchical system is an entertaining dynamic. The dialogue throughout Gilmore Girls, especially between Lorelai and Rory, is extremely captivating to the audience. You become extremely attached to the characters and how their storylines play out throughout the series. At the end of season three, Rory graduates from her prestigious high school called Chilton as the valedictorian. During her speech, she paid tribute to her mom for how the person she wanted to be the most growing up was Lorelai. The sweet moment makes me cry every time I watch it, without fail, as Rory’s family, friends and grandparents are tearing up in the audience as well. Speaking of cry-worthy moments, when Lorelai and Luke, her close friend and owner of the diner she frequents, finally start their romantic arc, it is a wonderfully cute moment. Luke invites Lorelai to slow dance at his sister’s wedding, and their smiling faces as the song “Reflecting Light” plays in the background makes you genuinely happy. It’s hard not to immerse yourself in the people of Stars Hollow, and you find yourself overcome with emotion at their big moments too. The Gilmore Girls series showcases a comforting nature that others fail to replicate today.
