In the 306 page novel, Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oakes, Dinah is a princess who is soon to become the Queen of Hearts, but her father, King of Hearts, comes in the way of that. The setting of this novel is in the fictional world of Wonderland. In the beginning of the novel, Dinah is surprised with a step-sister name Vittiore. Dinah fights for the approval of her father but never receives it. In the middle, Dinah goes to the Black Towers with her best friend and “future lover,” Wardley, after receiving a note with the name of Faina Baker. The Black Towers are where they keep and torture prisoners of the kingdom. Dinah realizes how treacherous the towers are and makes it her destiny as Queen to put an end to it. In the end, the King of Hearts kills Faina Baker and Dinah is told her brother, Charles, was killed by her father and has framed her as the murderer in the middle of the night. …show more content…
She makes sure that the stranger was telling the truth and escapes on the toughest Hornhoove in the kingdom. The theme of Queen of Hearts is family can be a battlefield. In the story, Dinah’s father says, “‘You need to be glad today, you ungrateful wretch!” (Oakes 24). Dinah’s father, the King of Hearts, lied about having another daughter and has forced Dinah to never speak of her mother again. This is an amazing amount of effort to forget Dinah becoming a queen. As Dinah gets closer and closer to becoming the new Queen of Hearts, her father shows no mercy in loving her. Dinah’s life is the definition of how family is a battlefield. After going to the Black Towers, Dinah is expected to go to Execution Day where they kill the people in the Black Towers. It is as if her father knew and Faina Baker is one of the many people being executed. Her father shows no mercy and Faina Baker’s life ends that day. In the story Dinah says, “My father will not see my tears, she thought. I will not give him what he wants this day,” (Oakes 236). Dinah does not let her father break her there, but instead she holds it in until later. In conclusion, the future Queen of Hearts is no different than anyone in the world; she has her issues with her father as many people do. Dinah’s family is a battlefield. Queen of Hearts relates to my life in many different ways. For example, when Dinah fears her father for the many things he has done to hurt her I can relate to in a way. I fear my mom sometimes when I know that I have done something wrong. Another example might be when Dinah chooses to go check to make sure the stranger was not lying about her brother being killed by her father. I too would not believe some stranger that came to me in the middle of the night. That is like saying a burglar told me that my dog died. Would anyone believe that? My final example is how Dinah runs away due to her father framing her for her brother’s murder. I have ran away before thinking that I would be better off without my parents, but unlike Dinah I realized halfway down my street that I really was not prepared to live off of the streets and turned back. Therefore, I am very much like Dinah. Queen of Hearts is a good novel to read.
I feel that its adventurous setting and the conflict went together to create an amazing story. My favorite part of the story was when Dinah rides Morte, the hornhoove, out of the palace. I found myself on the edge of my seat wanting to read more and more. My least favorite part would have to be at the beginning when Vittiore comes as a surprise new member of the family for Dinah. I didn’t like this because I found it rude to anyone being adopted as Dinah was very rude to Vittiore. Aside from that part, I really enjoyed this novel. The twists and turns that Dinah went through really caught me on the edge of my seat. I found that the fact that they managed to escape the Black Towers without being killed amazing and surprising. I think that people who like action packed and adventurous stories will really enjoy Queen of Hearts. It has a little bit of everything. I laughed, cried, and fell in love with the characters in this story. In conclusion, I highly recommend this story for anyone looking for a fun and adventurous
read.
The book had a few characters that I liked, but a lot of characters that I disliked. For example Yasmine was a character that I disliked. I didn’t like her because she brought pain to Paige’s life. Yasmine and Paige were best friends for months in Sixth grade. They were constantly doing fun activities together, like having sleepovers or planning each other’s birthday parties, but all that was ruined by a mistake Yasmine made. Paige and Yasmine were at a school dance, when
I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. Several scenes pleasantly caught me off guard and some were extremely hilarious, namely, the visit to Martha Oldcrow. I found myself really fond of the char...
I would recommend this book to people who love realistic stories. Personally for me it is hard to find books that interest me and this one felt like if I was watching someone else's life while I read it. It has so many interesting points. When you think something might happen
My overall opinion of this book is good I really liked it and recommend it to anyone. It is a good book to read and it keep you interested throughout the whole book.
The movie is, most likely, done well enough to intrigue its intended audience. It captured the theme and story line of the book. It falls short, though, when compared to the beautiful, sensitive and contemplative prose of Natalie Babbitt. One could only hope that a viewing of the film will lead the watcher to try the book and be delighted all the more.
have chosen it for my report. Finally, I will give my reactions to the novel
It’s a novel that has a little bit of everything for everybody. The only reason I didn’t give the it a 10/10 is because it’s hard to nail down who the main characters are (even though I would argue that with so many great characters, there really doesn’t need to be a main character), and there are some sexual scenes in the novel I found to be semi-unnecessary, which might make some people dislike the whole story. However, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who want a genuinely fantastic story to read, people interested in a novel full of vibrant, realistic, and sometimes flawed (in a good way) characters, or anyone with some time to kill for long stretches, because they won’t want to put this book
Growing up in 1960s, Diana Spencer always knew royalty. This idea of power was a birth right through her father, but yet Diana did not know of the influence she was going to inflict one day. Princess Diana, through her marriage with Prince Charles, became an icon for the United Kingdom and impacted many in the world (Princess Diana Biography Princess). Along with her compassionate heart and humble soul, Diana ascended in the eyes of the public and became England’s sweetheart and beloved leader. Princess Diana soon inspired people all over the world by breaking the royal stereotypes, sponsoring many charities and providing a prime example of what it means to love one’s children and people.
I heard quite a bit of conflicting thoughts about this one, some people didn’t like it, and some loved it. I think it’s one of those books that you just need to pick up and make the decision yourself. In saying all this, I truly did love The Girl from Everywhere and I am so excited to read more.
The book and the movie were both very good. The book took time to explain things like setting, people’s emotions, people’s traits, and important background information. There was no time for these explanations the movie. The book, however, had parts in the beginning where some readers could become flustered.
Dinah is born into a society where all women are expected to put their feelings aside to conform to and satisfy the man and his children. She is trapped from the very beginning in a chauvinistic and male-dominated worl...
Brian May and Roger Taylor, in 1970, set the wheels in motion for Queen when they decided to form a band during their college years. Queen started out as a band called Smile who signed with Mercury Records, and included: Tim Staffell, Brian May, and Roger Taylor. Once Tim Staffell left, the group added Freddie Mercury (lead singer) and bassist John Deacon. Freddie Mercury, Farrokh Bulsara, was a fan of Smile and was added on as the lead vocalist. John Deacon began as a young guitarist who was a member of the group called The Opposition. This band was composed of a group of friends, and they were influenced by groups such as The Hollies and Herman’s Hermits. Eventually, Deacon was added to the group that already included Mercury, Taylor, and May. Over time, the group changed their name to Queen. The name Queen was selected by Mercury, and this name is symbolic of power and regality. The addition of Mercury proved to be an essential aspect to the history of Queen’s success. In Queen: The Early Years, Hodkinson writes, “much of what made Freddie also defined Queen: without him they were merely a model rock band with a bent for a commercial tune” (2). The group became well known for their theatrical performances and costumes that were often over the top. “From their international breakthrough in 1976, Queen continually remained one of the best-selling rock acts worldwide beyond Mercury's death in 1991. Their total record sales are estimated at up to 300 million records” (Desler 391). This group was important to the evolution of music and music performance in bands that were to follow them.
I loved this book, its different religious views and different perspectives, the little love story and the search for oneself. It was a book that I couldn’t let go of. A book that can make you cry and is very emotional.
Once upon a time… I know what you are thinking, oh no not that type of story again. They always go Once a upon a time there was a princess and a prince, then comes along the bad guy they try to keep the princess away from the prince. It works. The bad guy messes up a relationship but then it gets better and they live happily ever after. The End. Those are great stories but are predictable. Not this one, so let’s start again. Once upon a time, there was a beautiful maiden called Danielle. She has the reddest hair you could imagine, (it has the slightest curls); bright blue eyes, light skin, and 5’3. Yes, she was a princess, but not any ordinary one.
I love this book because the characters are developed very well and have such interesting stories! I also love the mystery; it’s like I never know what will happen next and I love books that aren’t predictable. And lastly, I love the romance between Tris and Four. They are so perfect together, and I love reading about them.
