Gaspare Traversi created his oil on canvas painting, Quarrel over a Board Game, in 1752. As the title states, the painting’s focus is on two gentlemen quarreling over a game of what appears to be checkers. This painting is currently being exhibited at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT. The painting is not large. It is 4 by 5 ft. in a gold patterned frame. The painting is placed on a wall in a brightly lighted room at a viewer’s eye level. Many aspects of Traversi’s Quarrel over a Board Game are in motion. For example, the figures’ faces are displaying looks of either fear, anger or distress about what is happening. The man on the left, who is involved in the quarrel, is wearing a blue waistcoat and a beautiful floral patterned shirt. In his hand, he holds a sword, which appears to be pulled from his hand opposed to being taken out of a sheath. Also, he appears to be the victim of the quarrel because his face is scrunched, and he looks scared. Also, he is the center point of the scene for the reason that all the figures’ eyes are focused on This is similar to Manet Dejeuner painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe because his painting also does not differentiate the figures in the front from the back to illustrate distance. Also, in the background, there are several figures who are in distress from the violence that is occurring. What appears to be a female housemaid is yelling at the men to calm down before they cause any violence. Also, what appears to be a small child is frightened by the sudden violence and is holding on to the maid for comfort. In the left corner, there is a man who is restraining another man who seems to be fleeing from the scene. However, a man comes running from the right side of the painting from out of a door and he is prepared to stop the fleeing man from
Examining the formal qualities of Homer Watson’s painting Horse and Rider In A Landscape was quite interesting. I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because it was the piece I liked the least, therefore making me analyze it more closely and discover other aspects of the work, besides aesthetics.
We walked and walked looking at each art piece, which were all well displayed. Then as I looked at the back wall, a large oil canvas painting looked right back at me. I could feel its pain and so then, I decided to do my paper on this piece. The painting was The Ragpicker by Manet. (The Ragpicker. Edouard Manet.1865.Oil on canvas.) The painting was so enormous that it was hard to miss. Such a huge painting for one man, it almost looked life-like. The dimensions of this work is 76.75” x 51.25”. This scene seems to take place of a lower-class man late in his age, probably near his seventies, appears to be looking out of the corner of his eye. The ...
In the novel, Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, the children all have the ability to think in abstract ways. The government in this book takes advantage of the children’s ability to think in these ways. The adults need the children to be in charge of society because they act on instinct. First, Card shows that because the children act on instinct it allows them to be able to kill others without being aware of that fact. Second, Card shows that the children acting on instinct allows the government to somewhat still be in control. Finally, he shows that their society is blinded by the major control that the government has over the families, mainly the children. First, I will be talking about how Card shows that because the children act
Caravaggio’s Cardsharps and George De La Tour’s Cheats with the Ace of Clubs were both inspired by card games and gambling. Caravaggio was an artist during the sixteenth century who made Cardsharps, which is “the most influential gambling-themed painting in the history of art” (Goldstein 1201). It was so influential that it inspired many other artists to make similar themed paintings, including La Tour’s painting, the Cheat with the Ace of Clubs. While both Caravaggio and La Tour both use the theme of cheating and have similar art styles in their paintings, both paintings demonstrate differences when it comes to the overall meaning of the piece and the art techniques used.
The whole world at stake at any moment the buggers could destroy us all and leave nothing behind. We must use our greatest people and leaders to fight and save the human race so that means 7 year old kids? Think about it there have never been kids used in the U.S army to fight big threats that could affect the whole world. This is because kids are not as strong mentally or physically than grown man or woman that could fight more strategically and more efficiently than the kids used in Ender’s Game. Along with that the real world would not trust the fate of the world to be in the hands of a 7 year old kid. Also it could cause kids permanent damage of killing a thing or an entire race. Kids should not be used to fight because it changes them mentally in A negative way and there could be a more efficient way to get the job done.

In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the narrator specifies the conflict in a variety of ways. For example when Rainsford was running away from General Zaroff and he ran into a problem which was the quicksand. Also when Rainsford was being hunted he remembered a few traps that he used on animals that he would try on Zaroff. Lastly Rainsford was hiding from Zaroff but he was really frightened because he did not want to die. Therefore being hunted is not a good thing because other than dying you can get severely hurt.
This painting has a landscape shape, as well as belonging to a historical or war genre. The angle of this painting is a pretty normal eye level, as if standing a couple meters away from the scene and looking straight and a couple degrees tilted downwards. I can tell this because you can see on the painting that Sargent has made the ground visible as well. The painting centers around injured and tired soldiers, about 11 of them standing and leaning on each other in a line. The majority of the soldiers are facing the same direction, looking to the right (from the perspective of the viewer) except for two soldiers who are looking the other way. This line of soldiers is being helped by another man who is dressed in overalls and a hat, who is obviously not apart of their group. Almost all of the soldiers we can see that are standing up have a white cloth covering their eyes. This line of soldiers are walking on what looks to be a series of wooden planks, laid down horizontally. These wooden planks are leading a path towards several ropes that are tied down to the ground around the soldiers. You can see one of the soldiers in the first line has his leg lifted as if walking up stairs, to accent the step of the wooden plank. The ropes are attached onto dark, metal connector that straps the ro...
Jessica Statsky, in her essay, “Children need to Play, Not Compete” attempts to refute the common belief that organized sports are good for children. She sees organized sports not as healthy pass-times for children, but as onerous tasks that children do not truly enjoy. She also notes that not only are organized sports not enjoyable for children, they may cause irreparable harm to the children, both emotionally and physically. In her thesis statement, Statsky states, “When overzealous parents and coaches impose adult standards on children's sports, the result can be activities that are neither satisfying nor beneficial to children” (627). While this statement is strong, her defense of it is weak.
Movements can have diverse meanings according to the book Understanding Movies by Louis Giannetti. For example there are vertical movements, upward movements, downward movements, towards and away from the camera. Also, according to this film professor, physical movements that are from right to left in this exact direction seem unnatural. As mentioned previously in City of God, there is a pattern with this kind of movement that expresses ideas of power in the hands of a senseless killer, Lil Ze. To Giannetti movements are very important in a scene, since they h...
In the American culture, the population prides itself on the freedom our country supplies. Recent years, media has become the infrastructure of how we communicate, notify the public, and advertise. It created a whole new world that we’ve come love, but has this love turned into an addiction? After watching the Consuming Kids video, I have to agree with some points that were made. Yes, kids are becoming addicted to consuming what they see through media. Yes, some of media is flooded with R-rated subjects that are inappropriate for kids. Although I understand how the producers of the short film see the bad in media, there is also pros that outweigh the cons. I do not agree with their Authoritarian view on mass media and how they disagree with the first
Todays meeting held in Worlds of Play-Seattle, Alex Harrington, a business strategy consultant from Ernst and Young LLP, disclosed “Operation Upmarket.” Operation Upmarket is a business strategy designed to aim issues of profitability for Worlds of Play.
