While my life was been filled with many personal accomplishments, my most fulfilling accomplishments have come from helping others. One event that has stayed very prominent in my life has been a series of accomplishments I fulfilled in high school. Having been part of my school’s robotic team, Quantum Samurai Team 1601, I was given the privilege of assisting in a yearly project called Project H2O. At the beginning of each school year, my team would select an impoverished village in a third world country that is in desperate need of clean water and provide them with a water purifier. While we take clean water for granted, in these villages, villagers are sometimes forced to travel several miles every day to retrieve water for their families.
As learners of Europe and Japan, the question “ who would win a battle-a samurai or knight” is commonly kept in mind. A samurai and knight are similar in many ways. A samurai would mostly win the battle because they have better weapons, armor, and training. While knights and samurai have many similarities, in a one on one battle, the advantage would be to the samurai and this can be seen in weapons, armor, and training.
Musui’s Story is the exciting tale of a low class samurai’s life towards the end of the Tokugawa era. Although one would normally imagine a samurai to be a noble illustrious figure, Musui’s Story portrays the rather ignominious life of an unemployed samurai. Nonetheless, this primary account demonstrates the tenacity of samurai values and privileges present at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. The social status of samurai had been elevated to such a state that even someone like Musui was easily able to gain influence in everyday affairs with his privileges. Not only that, but he had retained his values as a warrior and still kept great pride for his arts in weaponry.
Few countries have a warrior tradition as long and exciting as Japan. It is a tradition found in the Samurai, the loyal and self-sacrificing knight of ancient Japan. The Samurai is a valiant warrior who can both appreciate the beauty of nature in that of a rose blossom but will also kill or die for his master in an instant. This well-rounded warrior was the ruling class of Japan for almost seven hundred years. He fought for control of his country and to keep Japan free from outside influences. (Turnbull 1)
Ever since I was a young student, teachers knew that I was not a normal kid. These teachers saw qualities in me that they could not see in many students at that age level. They saw a child who had a profound love to know more and had the ambition of a decorated Olympic swimmer to learn not just the material that was being taught but why it is being taught and how I can I use this information to make people’s lives better. Fast-forward to today, and you can clearly see that not much has changed except my determination to learn and my love to help others has done nothing but expanded.

The Samurai class was one of the highest classes to be in medieval Japan .These elite warriors are said to be the best of the best in the system of Japanese warriors. The samurai class had a certain type of weapons used in war and their battles they had 3 different types of swords. The katana, Wakizashi, and the Yari. The swords were usually made by normal sword smiths. However, if a sword for a high ranking samurai was to be mad they would have the best sword smith in all of japan to craft the sword, spear, and dagger. The samurai had different types of armor too for each of their different classes. The shogun had his own type of amour that signified who he was the armor was decorated with a custom helmet made by the best craft man and full body suit which was also made by the top Japanese designers. The normal samurai had their own type of armor but it usually was never custom and depending on the time period. The samurai armor changed over time from a hard type of paper to copper to metal and at the end of the samurai age standard military clothing. The samurai were a class that didn’t start as a class used in army’s. The samurai were first used as personal warriors that were hired by high ranking officials or sometimes the emperor himself. It was not till an emperor decided to use them as Japan’s own army that they were used during warfare but some people still did own private samurai army’s. The two main groups with the most samurai were the Minamoto clan and the Fujiwara clan. These two clans were rivals and hated each other. The two clans had many little skirmishes but at the end the Minamoto clan won and took over as the best clan of Japan. The leader of the clan soon became the first shogun (military leader of japan) he ...
The University of Miami is a top ranked private university in the United States, and while very diverse, it is not an easy task to find a student who fits the profile of a first generation college student whose parents were born and raised in the United States. After a long search, I came across a girl I’d call Sarah. Sarah is attending the University of Miami on a scholarship to run on the schools Division I girls cross country and track team. Sarah attended high school in a large suburb just outside of Chicago, Illinois, where she ran cross country and track before being recruited to UM. As a member of the university’s environmental club called the “Green Team,” Sarah has used her passion for a clean environment to inspire her to study environmental engineering while here in her first year of studies.

The ranching and farming community became less. These cities and towns now needed water to go to every household. The process of getting water to every household was not the only obstacle but also the fact of having clean water. Most of the water on earth is too salty to be consumed and in fact carry diseases and bacteria. In order to keep our water safe a whole process was put in place for homes to receive this water. Treatment plants, public agencies and private sectors make our water safe for drinking and using daily are now found in every city and town. State laws are set up to make sure the population receives clean and safe water. This is important, of course, but what about rain water and the collection of it. Because of these treatment plants we pay for our water consumption but should we pay for collecting the rain for other
Ancient and modern Eastern Civilizations were some of the most influential civilizations in shaping the world. The three major civilizations in the east are China, Japan and the Middle East. The Chinese brought the world the ideas of Confucianism along with powerful dynasties and modern day communism. Japan starting with an isolationist view changed drastically when they adopted a modernized society and later imperialism.
There is nearly 1 billion people who do not have access to clean drinking water (Jones, MM 11/9/2016). Low income families are not likely to have access to water within the immediate area, so women and children are forced to travel long distances in order to gather water that is not clean at all (11/9/2016). Not only is the travel dangerous, but it takes away time from children to be getting an education (11/9/2016). Some possible adverse health effects from drinking contaminated water include diarrhea, dehydration, and even death (11/9/2016). Infants are much more sensitive to the bacteria in the water given their undeveloped immune system, which is why water related illnesses is one of the leading causes of deaths for infants without clean drinking water (11/9/2016). There are interventions being undergone to help improve access to safe drinking water. For example, wells are being installed closer to people’s homes to avoid the long and treacherous walk to an already contaminated water supply (11/9/2016). Not needing to travel for hours every day allows children and women the time to get educated (11/9/2016). Another, more expensive intervention, is a water filtration system (11/9/2016). The government of each country should invest money towards these interventions as an investment towards improving the quality of life, creating a more educated society, and reducing medical costs

People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
... drinking water such as Bolivia and Ghana. In the documentary, Flow the experience of poor Bolivians was shown. The water corporations provided unclean drinking water that was full of pollutants. The water cost more than the poor could afford. As a result the citizens rioted and protested against the private water company.
Have you ever had to walk miles away just to get clean drinking water, or don’t even not have access to clean drinking water? People all over the world, even in North America, don’t have access to clean drinking water or have to walk very far just to drink water. The main areas where this problem is prominent is in third world countries, and this is due to the lack of money and sanitation (Millions Lack Safe Water). Due to this lack of sanitation, water borne diseases can grow and infect people who consume it. Clean water is very important for life, and within this paper I will explain why we need it, how it can affect us, and what it will take to obtain clean water.
