In the today’s society, people are looking for what type of emotion completes them; the emotion is love. Love is the type of emotion that is difficult to explain. When love as an emotion is lost, that person also feels lost, ultimately changes themselves complete. There are several ways in which people change and/or react to such emotions. For example, some react in anger and others react in depression. In 1912, a play written by George Bernard Shaw talked about this same nature of love. Shaw wrote the play, Pygmalion, due to said reaction. However, the reasons why are somewhat ironic.
One of the reasons why Shaw made the play was due to whether he believed in love or not. During the construction of the play, Shaw spoke of love repeatedly as he was a man who was in love when he wrote it. At that time, George Bernard Shaw was having an affair with an actress Patrick Campbell; the love he had for Patrick Campbell was very intimate or so that’s how Shaw thought it was. When it did not work out, He became very angry; Pygmalion was the result of how it did not work. At the end of the play, Shaw kept the readers guessing in controversy whether or not true love does exist.
Shaw made it suspenseful by leaving the audience with a cliff hanger which was then interpreted in a way that he did not agree with. With Shaw’s anger towards these interpretations as well as his love leaving him in despair, he revised the story to have a “sequel” in which he states the ending he truly wanted. Shaw’s interpretation of how the story should have ended left the protagonist in a depressed state. This was assumed because of the grudge he had with Patrick till his death.

As I am building the scenario of the play revisited I try to not hold a basis the play itself. The whole point of reworking the play is that it should be up to the viewer to decide what should occur. The director should allow the audience to decide for themselves which love is greater. The reason why the play will be rewritten into a contemporary model where Eliza is becoming a lawyer instead of a flower girl is to preserve a story with an unexpected ending. The actors chosen to lead particular roles are so that the idea of which love is stronger truly exists. This is what I believe Shaw’s actual point of writing the play was all about. Does love truly exists or is it a hard ending for all?
When we think about the force that holds the world together and what makes humans different from animals, one answer comes to our minds - that humans can love. Love is a state of mind that cannot be defined easily but can be experienced by everyone. Love is very complicated. In fact it is so complicated that a person in love may be misunderstood to be acting in an extremely foolish manner by other people. The complexity of love is displayed in Rostand’s masterpiece drama Cyrano de Bergerac. This is accomplished by two characters that love the same woman and in the course neither one achieves love in utter perfection.

There are two very different, yet equally compelling relationships that are explored in depth. They run through the play concurrently, allowing the reader to compare and contrast the different facets and complexities between the two. The playwright’s rich understanding of relationships, and particularly his understanding of the fact that love is not always as formulaic as many a writer would have us believe, makes for a fascinating read. In fact, by directly comparing a realistic couple, full of real world self doubt and a fear of rejection with a very stereotypical love-at-first-sight type of relationship, Shakespeare is possibly making the point that love and relationships have more depth than is often given credit.
Romeo and Juliet is arguably the most famous story about love in literature. This is in part because of the tension caused by the look the different characters have towards what love means and its role in life. These views were very important for the progression of the story. Their different views collided and caused much grief and sorrow for the characters throughout play. Many important events that propelled the story forward would not have happened without the various feelings towards love the characters have and how they felt of and reacted to the other characters’ view on love.
Throughout the lives of most people on the planet, there comes a time when there may be a loss of love, hope or remembrance in our lives. These troublesome times in our lives can be the hardest things we go through. Without love or hope, what is there to live for? Some see that the loss of hope and love means the end, these people being pessimistic, while others can see that even though they feel at a loss of love and hope that one day again they will feel love and have that sense of hope, these people are optimistic. These feelings that all of us had, have been around since the dawn of many. Throughout the centuries, the expression of these feelings has made their ways into literature, novels, plays, poems, and recently movies. The qualities of love, hope, and remembrance can be seen in Emily Bronte’s and Thomas Hardy’s poems of “Remembrance” “Darkling Thrush” and “Ah, Are you Digging on my Grave?”

Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw is a play that shows a great change in the character Eliza Doolittle. As Eliza lives in poverty, she sells flowers to earn her living. Eliza does not have an education. This shows through the way that she does not have the most proper way of speaking. This happens through when Eliza is speaking to the other characters when she meets then when she is still at a low level of poverty in her life. To understand the reasons Eliza is able to change and be changed into an almost Cinderella like character. With Eliza going from and growing and changing through the hardship she faces. In the play Eliza begins with no confidence and works towards having a way to reach trough from learning during her life experiences. Learning through the other characters Eliza meets through out the play. Eliza grows stronger and shows how she is able to change her ways one can understand how she is able to change and makes these changes by seeing her through poverty, how she is interacting with the other characters in the play, and through the things she learns from the options that are provided to her. Eliza’s beginning education skills of learning to speak clearly through learning diction, etiquette, and looking proper for society. In addition, from how Eliza feels rich when she has money from the broken flowers and when she is able to be riding in the taxi, her ideas showing her strong will her insistence on marrying Freddy. Both Eliza and Cinderella grow up in poverty, have a stepmother figure, have a fairy godmother figure, arrive at the ball, show confidence, and married. By comparing and contrasting Eliza to Cinderella, we can better understand why and how Eliza changes.
