We have read a number of short stories now in various genres. In order to truly understand literature, you need to write as well as read. For your Learning Journal you will write one short story from any of the genres we have covered (or will cover) this term.
This is your chance to write a complete work of original fiction. It can be as little as THREE Paragraphs or as much as TWO pages.
The story I read from one of the genres we dealt with in the past in “There´s a Man in the Habit of Hitting Me on my head with an Umbrella” written by Fernando Sorrentino. This story depict the character of an old man whose name is not mentioned in the story had repeatedly been hitting a person (unnamed) with his umbrella on his or her head. According to

This was beyond I can bear, then I “furious” and asked him “if he was insane to stop.” He turned deaf hear and continued hitting me with the umbrella, I thought of calling the police and I realize that the idea was not good enough for me, I stood up and hit him on the nose, the man fell down to the ground and later stood up and increased in strength hitting my head with the umbrella. According to the narrator, when he saw that the strange man´s nose was “bleeding,” he felt bad and had pity on him for hitting him so hard. He repented when he came to a point of reality that the strange man was not even hitting hard on …show more content…
He eventually came down from the bus, and took San Fe Avenue and people stand by to watch the both of them as if it was a comedy. In my anger, I wanted to say “What are you all looking at, you idiots?” But I paused for a while and told myself that maybe such had never occurred to them before, According to the Narrator, the boys began to run after them and shouting “Mad People.” I got home and my plan was to slam the door at the lunatic man´s face but he thought smarter than I had imagined; held the door handle and force himself inside my house and continued hitting me with his umbrella on my head. I implored with him to kindly tell me what the problem was but he was speechless and he continued with his lunatic manner. I knew if I hit him for the second time or I do anything stupid, something might happen. What at the point of killing him and I found myself dead, I scarily dropped the ideas because it makes no sense according to the narrator. Suddenly, I was nervous and questions began to sprang out of my mind that at the point I will be needing this man, then I will not find him anymore and it has really helped in gaining strength to sleep

The writer has used a combination of narrative and descriptive styles of writing. He has used the descriptive style to give a step by step illustration on what a man should do, how he should behave and lastly what he should say from the beginning to the end of the story (Meyer 45). The narrative style comes into play as he adds in his characters, the conflicts they will face or words they will use and the settings and or challenges they will encounter throughout the short story. González’s “Wake” and Laura van den Berg’s “Volcano House” are two short stories that should be incorporated into high school curriculums due to the knowledge that can be gained from discussing the works in class, the use and examples of literary devices, and the lessons included. Students would have the opportunity to gain a wealth of knowledge to better improve future pieces of writing, look at works of literature from different viewpoints, and take the lessons to carry with them in everyday life. These stories will not only better the student in the English classroom, but will help them in other classes and outside of school. I firmly believe that “Wake” and “Volcano House” should be added to high school

A short story is a work of literature that is shorter than a novel. Although some may believe the length may not be enough to develop a noble story, in these few pages an author can pack a tight punch that will leave one in awe, disgust, or utter sadness. Whether there is a moral of the story or it is simply for the reader’s enjoyment, each author has their own style of conveying a message through their work in very diverse ways. Through Flannery O’Connor and Chuck Palahniuk’s works we can see this very evidently.

Literature has long been an important part of human life. We express our feelings with ink and paper; we spill out our souls on dried wood pulp. Writing has been a form of release and enjoyment since the beginning of written language. You can tell a story, make yourself a hero. You can live out all your fantasies!

He begins to think how he had just killed a man and how him and his friends had tried to attempt rapping a girl. As he is walking in the lake he touches a dead body and gets freaked out even more and began to yell. Then the girl hears him and scream there they are and began to throw rocks into the lake trying to hit the narrator. He then hears the voice of Bobby who bought him relief and sorrow at the same time. He felt relief because he discovers that the Bobby is not dead and sorrow because the Bobby was alive and wanted to kill him and his friends.
With a slow dawn I remembered. Had I slipped or had he hit me with something? My tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth as I relived the figure advancing towards me. It was dark. The street light that shone from behind the man in the faceless thickset man in the grey hoody ensured anonymity. Now he was coming. How long had I been here? My head ached as I struggled to assess my surroundings.
Have you ever read a novel that was so appealing that it left you with the interest of writing something similar? Writing a novel is a time-consuming process that requires patience, knowledge and a certain language. However, not all writers known today were born with natural talents. In fact, many had to work on their skills in order to succeed. Although it could be difficult to come up with an idea and express it in words, writing can be easier if you followed certain steps, such as writing a plot, building the characters and making it plausible to anyone who reads it.
