Five years ago, if someone had told me I would be in the United States, living my dreams I would not have believed them. I was born and raised on the small island of Jamaica along with my two sisters and an older brother. In our single parent home, everyday my mother reminded us of the value a good education. With her encouragement and my determination and tenacity I excelled academically in both middle and high school. I was able to make her proud once again by graduation Summa Cum Laude from the County College of Morris, Randolph NJ in 2016. Five years ago, on the small Island of Jamaica my dream was to earn my Undergraduate Degree in Business with highest academic recognition to make my family proud. (Add how scholarship would help you do this) Achieving the highest academic recognition does not only mean achieving the highest grade, it also means that I apply what I learn to my daily life and to overcome challenges. The opportunity to study Finance here at Rutgers has profoundly changed how I manage my personal finances and that of my family. Studying courses such as Ethics in Business, Corporate Finance, Economics, and Investments has given me a new perspective on the world, my community and myself. I am more conscientious about the role I play at work, in class, at home and among my peers and how I …show more content…
Prior to Rutgers I have had to seek employment to sustain my academic ambitions, however, I am now able to part take in the many activities the University offers. During spring 2017 I was the Treasure of a fairly new organization, the Society of Human Resource Management where at aided the President in creating different tactics for us to raise money for the budget and specific events and planning and implementation for careful budget utilization. This role allowed me the opportunity to utilize theories I learnt in the classroom to meet the objectives of the society while attracting new
When I was born, my family had just migrated to California from Mexico. In a new country, my father worked in landscaping earning less than $4 dollars an hour, while my mother relied on public transportation to take her newborn child to and from doctor visits. In the land of opportunity, my family struggled to put a roof over our heads. But never discouraged, my parents sought to achieve their goals and worked tirelessly to raise my younger brother and I. From a young age, I was taught the importance of education; this became a major catalyst in my life. My desire to excel academically was not for self-gain, but my way of contributing to my family’s goals and aspirations.
The path I have taken toward obtaining my Bachelor of Science Degree in Business, Management, and Economics, with a concentration in Marketing, has been different than I expected when I first started college. I started at Brooklyn College at 17-years-old and frankly, I wasn’t ready for it. I struggled to balance an awkward schedule of classes and inconsistent study habits. I never felt completely comfortable there and after two years of performing poorly, I enrolled at Kingsborough Community College. I viewed it as a new start and seized the opportunity. I decided to major in Business Administration; I made the Dean’s List, and saw my grades improve dramatically. After completing 74 total credits, I decided I was ready to return to a four-year-college. I initially considered returning to Brooklyn College but at this time my grandmother had become ill. I applied to the College of Staten Island which was near her home and would make it possible for me to help her out with whatever she needed and attend school locally. This worked out great for my first semester. I carried a 3.47 GPA and decided to major in Business, with a concentration in Marketing. At this time, I was working part-time while in school. But due to certain circumstances, I was forced to obtain a full-time job in addition to other part-time commitment. This made it very difficult for me to enroll in classes as most of the upper-level marketing classes that I needed for graduation were only offered during the day when I would now be working. I enrolled in night and weekend classes for the next two semesters but my grades began to suffer. In the last semester I tried to register at the College of Staten Island, I couldn’t fit the courses I needed into my ever-growing w...
“Never underestimate your own strength. You were born for a purpose and are blessed with the power to achieve it” (Leon Brown). I have this quote printed out and on the wall next to my door so I can see it every day as a reminder to myself. I believe that we all have a purpose on this earth and that everything we go through on the journey there has a reason whether to teach a lesson or set an example. We have places where we want to end up and goals we want to achieve. We set these goals and dreams to help us fulfill the purpose we see for ourselves. I believe my purpose is to help people in their times of need. To fulfill my purpose, I will need to use my personal, academic and career goals to create a pathway to get to where I want to be
The United States is the land of opportunity, and there are many good schools here, where are also a powerful force for students entering an amazing career. People like to live and set up plans for their life in America, and so do I. My dream is gone to school and is graduated with a mathematical professor’s degree. Although I am a full-time mom of two sons, it is never too late to do something I really want. Thus, my sons and seventy-four credit hours of college are all my treasure. I am proud of that for studying hard, evolving things, and resolving problems with any conditions to survive in school and life, and I have changed from that. Every different stage has every different circumstance for dealing with, and obstacles or conflicts in life cannot stop me reaching my goal. My exceptional hardships and opportunities have just shaped my abilities better.
Sitting on a gold throne, platinum rings on each finger with servants at my beck and call; wouldn't this be the good life? Growing I was a privileged child and never really understood the monetary value of cash. Everything I ever desired or inclined any preference to was given to me. And me being the child I was, with my developing mind embraced these gifts without a second thought. Though as I approached middle school, I started to take on more responsibility and slowly discovered the essence of hard work and the satisfaction of redeeming myself from a downward spiral of expecting to have things handed to me with out necessarily earning said luxuries.
As the eldest of four children, and the daughter of two loving and hard-working parents, I learned to fight for my dreams and care for my family very early on in life. Ever since I can remember my parents encouraged me to follow my dreams and “fly away from the nest.” For this reason, after I graduated high school in December, 2011, I dreamed to come to the United States to obtain an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Biology. I wanted to study in the U.S. for three major reasons: to help my family, to fulfill my dreams of becoming a researcher, and to escape the violent and pessimistic conditions of my city and
There are many things that I hope to accomplish and do when I get older. I want to improve and accomplish different things for myself in my career that I choose, in my material goals, and spiritually. I'm looking at the year of 2009, I will be out of college and be on my feet, hopefully. I have high expectations for myself and hope to accomplish as many of my dreams and goals as I can throughout my life.
Globalisation allows individuals, groups, corporations, and countries to reach around the world farther, faster, more deeply, and more cheaply than ever before. Most large local companies regard globalisation as opportunity, thereby exploring overseas markets for maximum market share and optimum business strategies. However, managers would face a series of challenges caused by leadership models, cultural backgrounds, political and economic risks, HR management, etc. To study multinational management skills is very useful for my future career. In this essay, I will set goals for this subject, identify the skills I have honed and need to improve, and explain my strategies for achieving goals.
My journey to my professional development began when I decided to pursue accounting studies in university. Growing up, I always had an aptitude for mathematics and problem solving which later led me to pursuing studies in accounting and finance. During my undergraduate program, I learned from case-based analysis where we were asked to assume the role of managers in order to develop analysis and decision making skills. Throughout this process, I gained valuable skills such as interpersonal skills, ability to analyze complex cases, communication skills and ability to work in teams. As many new graduates can admit to it, despite one’s excellent academic achievement, the work place comes with its challenges that require a balanced set of skills.
Ethics is basically a set of moral values and principles of one’s own or an organization. It is diagnosticating between right and wrong matter. Ethics is derived from a Greek word ‘ethos’ which means character or habits. ”Ethics is not definable, it is not implementable, because it is not conscious, it involves not only our thinking, but also our feeling.(Setzar 1709-1784)”.However, ethical values could be different among different individuals or personalities as everyone has their own precedence in life and also they have different cultures, religion , nation and nurturing according to which they prioritize their values. Moreover, these ethical values play a vast role in attaining certain goals in life either personal or professional. Goal is basically a result or achievement that one tends to acquire in life. But one shouldn’t earn his/ her goal on the cost of their ethical values. I believe that everyone should have specific plans to achieve desired goals in life but one should always emphasize on his/her own ethical values while making these plans to achieve goals. Many people however set a certain time limit to fetch their goal. I have various goals in my life that I wish to accomplish in my life. First of all I would like to discuss my personal goals. Personal goals are really important in one’s life to have a happy present and pleasant future. Personal goals are what one wants to see himself/ herself in person. My Personal goals are firstly to fulfill all the promises that I have made with my family. My family is in first place for me. I want to make my family proud of me. My father is my ideal as he is a very kind person a very good husband, a very good son and the best father on this earth. I really want to be like my...
For instance, in Philosophy and Ethics, I have refined my analytical skills by debating ethical issues such as utilitarianism. Studying IT has been essential in providing me with an understanding in how technological developments have advanced the business industry. My research project on Amazon showed me how the internet has revolutionised modern retail. In addition to this I have also gained knowledge about
Studying biology has allowed me to appreciate and understand the complexity of the human body, and enhance my knowledge on bodily processes. In particular, I enjoyed learning about lung diseases and the human heart. I found it captivating how substances found in everyday food diets such as cholesterol and fatty acids can increase one’s risk of getting a myocardial infarction. Chemistry has heightened my understanding of molecules and how they react and cooperate with each other and how various conditions can affect their rate. Mathematics has developed my ability to be more pragmatic when interpreting data and has allowed me to exercise my skills of thinking logically when problem solving, whilst studying English Literature has allowed me to enhance my writing and analytical
Being the best student with on-hands experiences and interpersonal skills would be a firm benchmark for my further education and work. The more I dig deep into my major, the more I am passionate into it. I continued my efforts in studying and obtained the top highest GPA upon the whole major. I was honored with the Study Encouragement Scholarship five times at UEL, which was granted to 10 best students out of nearly three hundred ones for each semester. Beyond my excellent academic record, I also took part in numerous extra-curricular activities to build up exceptional and qualified personalities.
I learned that I am an audible and practice oriented learner. I had to speak out or listen to lessons of math and science, and then practice it for myself. The same goes for most of the classes I have at LSU. Teaching and mentoring those students reminded me of how important it is to love and value my education and my accessibility to knowledge. Even learning things that may not interest me will still open my mind.
Setting goals gives me something to work hard for, and once accomplished, I feel proud. One achievable, yet, challenging goal I am focusing on is to play volleyball or softball at the collegiate level. This goal serves multiple purposes: the first relates to passion; the second, character. I pronounced, at age three, to my Grandmother that “I was born to be an athlete.” Playing sports is my passion, and I desire to play competitively against others who also embrace this same passion.
