I cannot even begin to express how truly grateful I am to receive this scholarship. It has taken me far too long to muster up the courage and strength to finally pursue my lifelong goal of obtaining my college degree. Although I had always done well in school as a kid, my childhood was a bumpy road, and going on to college after high school was never discussed at home, let alone the importance of a college degree. Once I graduated from high school, I did what I felt was expected of me, I moved out, got married and started a family of my own. It did not take me long to realize how difficult it was to support a family on meager wages. It took a toll on my marriage and I soon found myself a divorced, single mother. Even though I had a good, steady
office job, it just wasn’t enough to make ends meet. I wanted and needed to better myself not just for myself, but for my children as well. I wanted to lead by example. I wanted them to be able to do what I did versus what I didn’t do. Even then my first step was not college, but rather I enlisted in the Army National Guard. Serving in the Guard helped me become a stronger person overall. It helped me focus on my goals in life and taught me that I had the strength within myself to do what I once thought I couldn’t do. For the first time I began to see myself as a role model for my children. I still wanted to attend college, but the financial burden of going seemed overwhelming. Although I fulfilled my enlistment commitment and received an honorable discharge, my enlistment period did not make me eligible for veteran education benefits.

I need this scholarship to achieve my goals and most importantly to make my family proud. My family did not get this chance that you are giving me so I am not just doing this for me, I am also doing this for them. I already have all the support from all of my family and all of my friends, but that alone is not enough to conquer my dreams, and to prove all the people that have doubted me that they were wrong. Receiving a higher education has been a lifelong goal for me. All my life I wanted a job saving animals, as I got older I knew being a veterinarian is my all-time life objective. Having a college degree gives me the nostalgia that I long for; being able to say that I’m in college achieving my goals as becoming a veterinarian is gratifying to me. Being a role model to my daughter is also extremely important; having her see that anything is possible if you put your mind to it, she will see that life is difficult and there will be constant road blocks but with determination and hard work success is within reach. Ever since I was a child, it has always been clear to me that in order to create a better future for myself, it is important to get an education; however, as I grew older, I came to the realization that my goal in life involved much more than just working for all of the personal benefits that come with earning a degree. I learned that it is about becoming educated and experienced enough to help not only myself, but all of those who surround me. Welcome to the class and thank you for the many years of service that you dedicated to the nation. I think it is crazy how a college degree can have more influence in job promotions than the many years of experience that you have. I think that all of us, who have served and did not take college courses during our service, we always regret not doing it. However, I know for a fact how difficult it is to be able it is to maintain good grades while being on active duty.
