Progression of Literature
American literature plays an important role in how our country develops, and its values contribute to society 's standards. Literature progresses in a series of religious, artistic, and philosophical movements. The writing of a movement greatly influences its time period and defines its era’s traits. Each movement responds to preceding ideas and challenges its beliefs.
Two movements in American literature that are contradictory are Puritanism and Rationalism. Puritanism was a rigid religious movement practiced by early American settlers in which the writing was strongly impacted by the belief that God had control over everything. For example, poet Anne Bradstreet describes her opinion after her possessions were turned

The ideas of Romanticism were a response to the scientific reasoning of Rationalism. The basics of this artistic change are: the belief that some things can not be proven by science but still exist; experience supercedes rational thought; a belief in a connection between God, nature, and humans; and trust in intuition. The idea of a common man’s place in society and individualism adds to the spiritual beliefs of this concept. Transcendentalism has the same values as Romanticism, but places an emphasis on a relationship with nature and the idea that transcendence is received through intuition. William Cullen Bryant shows the connection of human and nature in his poem “Thanatopsis” when he states “Thine individual being, shalt thou go/ To mix forever with the elements” (1). Bryant describes the human body becoming part of the earth, and the soul joining nature. This greatness can be achieved through relying on instinct. In addition, the self-dependency of Romanticism is shown through “Self-Reliance”, an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson states “What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think”(365). Romanticists often wrote about instinct being the key to greatness and guiding you to success. “Self-Reliance” demonstrates that opinions and decisions should not be influenced or swayed by others, but purely your own. Furthermore, in the essay “Civil Disobedience”, Henry David Thoreau explains that “The mass of men serve thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies”(372). Thoreau expresses that men who do not think for themselves have no moral sense, and put themselves in danger. He suggests that serving with conscience results in the best outcome because control over the body and mind lets men do what they believe is right. Romanticism and Transcendentalism display new concepts that changed
American literature reflects society by displaying the positive and negative sides to our country’s history. Throughout the year we have been shown all sides of the story, not just one side. We understand the situation more if we take into account the other stories that nobody ever hears about. American Literature deals with the topics of identity/memory, conformity and rebellion, society and struggle, and war. By taking a look at the 9/11 pictures as well as the memorial statue, The Crucible,The Harlem Renaissance, The Great Gatsby, and The Things They Carried, it is easy to see that all aspects of American Literature directly reflect society in many ways.

When a writer starts his work, most often than not, they think of ways they can catch their reader’s attention, but more importantly, how to awake emotions within them. They want to stand out from the rest and to do so, they must swim against the social trend that marks a specific society. That will make them significant; the way they write, how they make a reader feel, the specific way they write, and the devotion they have for their work. Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgard Allan Poe influenced significantly the American literary canon with their styles, themes, and forms, making them three important writers in America.
Puritanism as a religion declined, both by diluting its core beliefs and by losing its members. This phenomenon was at work even in colonial days, at the religion’s height, because it contained destructive characteristics. It devolved into something barely recognizable in the course of a few generations. We can observe that the decline of Puritanism occurred because it bore within itself the seeds of its own destruction.
An influential literary movement in the nineteenth century, transcendentalism placed an emphasis on the wonder of nature and its deep connection to the divine. As the two most prominent figures in the transcendentalist movement, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau whole-heartedly embraced these principles. In their essays “Self-Reliance” and “Civil Disobedience”, Emerson and Thoreau, respectively, argue for individuality and personal expression in different manners. In “Self-Reliance”, Emerson calls for individuals to speak their minds and resist societal conformity, while in “Civil Disobedience” Thoreau urged Americans to publicly state their opinions in order to improve their own government.
America, a country founded by the few for the millions as it stands today, following the ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as coined from the Declaration of Independence. Just like other national literatures, American literature was shaped by its historical and cultural aspect which roots back to the times of the natives, but the writing tradition begun with the arrival of colonialist so called English adventurous in the New World and evolved throughout centuries till today and many authors from all classes, male or female, black or white from the colonial to the contemporary genre have contributed to enrich and destroy various biases constructed by the norms.
In addition, authors frequently lack originality and simply take the reader on all-too-familiar voyages into politics, morals, or religion. Successful writers are those who risk and go on to write about topics that many times others have been less willing to address. The product of these extraordinary efforts is compositions richly enhanced by human feelings and real problems that we encounter and relate to our everyday lives…thought-provoking discussions about religion, philosophy, or politics. These pioneering authors are not afraid to write about evil, the perverse aspects of man, or even sexuality… Their true voices have risen from behind the words taking shape in the minds of the readers. Few have done this, but in the 19th Century two remarkable Americans produced compositions of unequal quality. Their styles and the way they approach the reader are different from t...
How does American literature shape American culture? America, a baby nation compared to many other countries, has shaped itself into one of the most politically and technically advanced places in the world. The definition of American Literature is any literary work written in, or about The United States. The Great Gatsby, The Scarlet Letter, The Narrative of the Life of Fredric Douglass and various other works of literature are all pieces of American literature that have helped shape American society.
In order to see how cultural and historical situations affect literature throughout history, it is important to get a brief history on each era discussed in this paper. The first era we will be reviewing will be writings from 1865-1914. The Civil War was just ending in 1865. America lost over a half of million Americans in the war. The nation was in a state of disorder and the south was devastated. Nevertheless, the country prospered. America became industrialized and saw innovations such as; the railroads, telegraph, telephone, and electricity. The population of the United States had also started to increase due to immigration.
Persecution for your beliefs or the desire for purity within the church is not something that most modern day Christians are familiar with. In a day and age when most people change churches like they change their clothes (for the most flippant of reasons) it’s hard to conceive of the type of dedication, conviction and faith that our early Christian forefathers had when they first came to America. In the pages that follow we will briefly examine some of the causes and conditions which led to the Puritan migration of 1620, while also observing the distinctions which set them apart from their contemporary counterparts.
