A puppy mill is a place where people force dogs to reproduce in order to sell the pups to stores, people or anyone else who is willing to buy them so they can make money. Thousands of dogs are made each year by these mills, and because they make more dogs then they can sell an overpopulation of dogs begins to occur. A serious of conflict occurs from puppy mills. Since animals from stores are from breeding mills that means the mills are being supported to stay in business from anyone who buys a puppy from stores. Also since more people are buying from stores, less people are buying animals from a shelter therefore those animals have a higher chance of dying. Puppy mills also do not take care of the dogs whom are in their care. Some of the animals are abused very badly by these places. Female dogs are forced to reproduce every chance they can, and when they get to the point where they are physically no longer able to do so they get killed. There food is contaminated with algae or other bacteria that grows. (DoSomething.org) Also the living conditions they have the …show more content…
breeding females under can sometimes affect the way their pups come out, so they sell sick or unhealthy animals to people which in turn raises their medical expenses towards the dog in order to take care of it or keep it healthy. They also experiment in mixing breeds which is unhealthy for the nursing female dog along with her unborn pups. I became interested in this topic because I hate animal cruelty with a passion. When I found out about this I was infuriated that the country I live in would allow such a thing to go on for a long period of time and do nothing to improve the situation for the sake of these dogs along with society. I do not find it fair since these mills exist and sell to stores, animals in shelters who truly need a home have a less chance of getting adopted and a higher chance of being euthanized. In this paper I will argue that puppy mills should be illegal all over the USA due to the fact that they abuse their animals, take away the chance of a shelter dog being adopted, and cause overpopulation.
Everyone should care about this topic because lives are being taken due to this problem. Since there is an overpopulation of dogs in the United States of America shelters are overcrowded and are unable to help all the animals. To make room for more they euthanize some old ones to make room for the new ones. Also if there is an overpopulation in puppy mills some of them let the dogs go astray with no shots or anything. There could be a stray dog in your neighborhood with diseases and they could attack you at any moment. If this situation is not better addressed more animals will die everyday and the chances of someone either getting attacked by a stray dog with diseases or running over a dog will
rise. I will concentrate primarily on the abuse of these animals and how they are overpopulating in the USA. Most of my sources are internet sources that contain concernment for these animals and are against puppy mills. One of my sources is the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is the first and largest humane society of the world to find effective means to prevent cruelty towards animals in the United States. One Green Planet is a platform whom are pro-animals and the eco system. Also DoSomething.org is a large organization that encourages people to do soemthing good in the world and make a positive impact on it. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals “The federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA), passed in 1966, requires breeders who have more than three breeding female dogs and sell puppies to pet stores or puppy brokers to be licensed and inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). In most cases, the standards that breeders are required to meet by law are extremely minimal. Under the AWA, it is legal to keep a dog in a cage only six inches longer than the dog in each direction, with a wire floor, stacked on top of another cage, for the dog's entire life. Conditions that most people would consider inhumane, or even cruel, are often legal.” This is not even healthy for the animals. Since cages are stacked on top of each other feces from one dog will land on another or began to build up causing medical problems for the dog. Or if one urinates on the other then it causes the animals paws and skin to burn due to urine acid. (OneGreenPlanet.org) This is the only law America has concerning the treatment of these animals. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also states “More than half of U.S. states have chosen to legislate higher standards of care for commercially bred animals beyond the bare minimums required by the AWA. Unfortunately, 21 states have no laws on the books regulating commercial dog breeders—and a number of states that do require breeders to be licensed and inspected by the state only require commercial breeders to meet USDA standards of care.” The USDA, or the United States department of Agriculture, oversees animal and plant health inspection. their standards of care on breeding mills is it has to follow the animal welfare act, which is not even a safe law to abide for these animals. It’s clear there is no care for the lives and conditions of these animals. There needs to be a better solution to this problem. I propose America make puppy mills illegal. By doing so the number of homeless animals will decrease, amount of dog deaths will deplete, and no more dogs will live poorly. This will be effective because if there aren’t mills to make thousands of dogs each year then overpopulation of dogs will decrease. The amount of homeless animals will decrease with less dogs as well. More shelter dogs will be adopted because people will have to buy from the shelter in order to buy a dog. There will be less health issues concerning the animal because a shelter takes care of the animal a lot more than a mill does. Since more people are buying their animals from a shelter, the amount of dogs whom are killed annually will deplete because they won’t have to be put down due to overcrowding anymore. Also no animal will be in harms way if they are not in the hands of a puppy mill. This would affect everyone because people would not be able to buy animals from stores, they would have to go to a shelter if they wish to adopt an animal. People would not be able to be picky and choose a dog they wish to have, they would have to take what they can get because we’re not going to force any animals to mate in order to satisfy a person. This should be called to action right away. We should build more shelters to house the rescued animals from mills and take in other animals in need as well. Having more shelters means we can save more dogs because we can take in more; So the amount of homeless animals should rapidly decrease due to not only more adoptions, but more housings for these animals. We should help these poor creatures live a better and healthy life. They cannot fight for themselves, so we the people have to fight for them. In conclusion puppy mills should be illegal all over the United States of America because they abuse their animals, take away the chance of a shelter dog being adopted, and cause overpopulation. My proposal is the best way to go about this situation due to the fact these dogs are being abused by the mills they live in and that is not acceptable. They have contaminated food and water, poor living conditions, and are socially deprived of the world. The mills do not allow their dogs any playtime so they do not know how to interact with other animals nor do they know how to behave towards a human being. Also since more people buy animals from the store rather than from a shelter the chances of an animal, who truly needs a home, getting adopted will be less likely. Puppy mills only care about making money off selling pups so they don’t care nor do they notice the overpopulation of dogs they have caused. If an animal does not sell at the stores, the stores then give the animal to the shelter. Which if the shelter is full then it causes them to put down an animal to make room for another one. Sometimes mills will be reckless and allow their dogs to roam homeless with no shots or anything so a diseased dog could attack anyone at any given moment. Incidents like these are happening under the laws already made for so called “protecting the animals”. My solution is the best way to go because it’s truly caring about the health and care of these animals. No more animals shall be tortured, killed, or forced to live in unhealthy conditions in order to benefit someone else. No more animals shall be born with health problems so they will not suffer along with their owner having to pay a bunch of medical bills in order to keep their dog healthy. This would be saving and changing lives. I expect my proposal to work out for all animals and humans everywhere. I know this proposal seems drastic because some may wonder if dogs aren’t reproducing as much as then does that mean the population in dogs will rapidly decrease to where they will be extinct? The answer is no. Dogs will not go extinct if these puppy mills are band. Most humans buy their dog a companion and they mate willingly, not forcefully. That’s the way it should be done and that’s what I am fighting for today.
A puppy mill is a horrible place that breeds dogs. Dogs that are breedable may get little to no recovery time between pregnancies. Dogs and puppies are stuffed into wire cages that can harm them. Puppy mills tend to be overcrowded disease and virus filled places. Puppy mills focus on profit rather than the health of the dogs. Many dogs are bred with little regard of genetic quality. Dogs in puppy mills are deprived of veterinary care, food, water, and socialization. If a dog is older and unable to breed anymore they are likely to be killed. Some dogs may never see the light of day or get any attention.
What is a Puppy Mill, How are animals being at Puppy Mills. Animals are being severely neglected by the owners. Responsible breeding practices end up killing. Animals get abused and usually are left to die with no food, water or even locked in a cage. Puppy mills are operating all over the U.S. After breeding for amount of times and don’t get time to recover and cant reproduce anymore are often killed off. Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, without care, food, water and socialization. Puppy mill dogs do not get to experience treats, toys, exercise or basic grooming. To minimize waste cleanup, dogs are often kept in cages with wire flooring that injures their paws and legs- and it is not unusual for cages to be stacked up in columns. Breeding dogs at mills might spend their entire lives outdoors, exposed to the elements, or crammed inside filthy structure where they never get the chance to feel the sun or breathe fresh air. Puppy Mills should be outlawed because some animals are being severely neglected and owners act out without regard to respons...
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to help abolish puppy mills by adopting and volunteering. Those no matter how big or small their efforts are, that can make a difference and help cease puppy mills and their perpetuation in our society.
Year after year people buy puppies from big breeders. Have you ever wondered where that puppy grew up? What kind of conditions the puppy lived in? Most puppies that someone would buy from a pet store are raised in puppy mills. Puppy mills are well-known for their “inhumane conditions” and the endless breeding of “unhealthy and genetically defective” dogs only for income. People should adopt rather than buy from a pet store or breeder. By adopting from a shelter, one could give a dog a second chance at a happy life.
These dogs can grow up to have behavioral issues. Because these canines are used to sitting in their own filth they have potty training issues. Franklin D. McMillian from Best Friend Animal Society conducted a study where they examined that “puppy mill dogs displayed significantly higher rates of fear (both social and nonsocial), house-soiling, and compulsive staring; and significantly lower rates of aggression (towards strangers and other dogs), trainability, chasing small animals, excitability, and energy.” These dogs aren’t just affected physically, they are affected
First, puppy mills are inhumane. According to the video “Puppies Are Not Toys,” puppy mill dogs are like plush dog toys. They are “manufactured with others” meaning that they are basically mass-produced like the plush toys and when they receive no attention they become like the toy that nobody wanted to buy (ASPCA).
One of the many problems that we seem to be having is the amount of No Kill Shelters in America. No kill Shelters are shelters in which the animals there are not treated like the “pound” or “dog house.” These shelters do not kill healthy or treatable animals and even if they are not treatable they reserve euthanasia for them as the last resort to trying to save the animals. However, many understand that these some of these dogs can be a menace to society, but every single animal should be able to live. We do not have many of these in this country or if we do we are use the animals for the testing of some of our products. One of the many benefits of No Kill Shelters is the promotion of adopting dogs. Many people do not adopt dogs but they go to breeders which is not a bad idea, but we have many dogs that get killed in pounds every day. Why do we Americans have the say so in when an animals wants to die? With everything there are pros and cons and some of these cons can be the overpopulation of animals , but we do not kill humans if one race/gender is becoming overpopulated. The
Citizens, animals, and shelters are affected by this issue of animal overpopulation. Citizens are affected because their taxes are being put to shelters, the shelters are then cost for chemicals to put the pets to sleep. The animals are then put to sleep in order to keep the population of pets under control. The animal would have been saved from this horrible fate if there were enough willing homes to take them in or there were less of them that were homeless. People have tried to fix this problem in different ways only some where
...es to all of the other dogs in the world. In a country proud of our diversity and freedoms, we should be granting dogs the same lives. They deserve that diversity in what breeds they are mixed with and the freedom of a life outside of the bars in a shelter. Do your part and give a dog the life it deserves.
Puppy mills began after World War II when farmers were desperate to find ways to make money, after the widespread farm failures (AmeriDogs NP). Farmers began their mills with low income and already run down living conditions. The dogs were housed in chicken coops and rabbit pens, where they were denied veterinary care and socialization to humans or other animals (NP). The Farmers weren't educated on how to properly take care of the dogs they were housing leaving the animals sick, emaciated, and very unhealthy. Eventually the animal welfare act passed in 1966 which outlines specific minimum standards of care for dogs, cats and some other kinds of animals bred for commercial resale (Stop NP). After this, animal rights organizations were able to shut down some of the puppy mills that were in bad conditions, but shutting down all puppy mills throughout the U.S. would be an impossible task. Now there are many organizations dedicated to shut down as many puppy mills as possible.
Puppy mills are mass breeding facilities that show little to no care for animals. They are created so companies can breed animals to make purebreds. The animals are not well taken care of and many of them die from either disease or giving birth too many times in their life span. There should be laws and guidelines to regulate the operation of puppy mill facilities. Puppy mills bring torture to animals and need to be stopped.
The Puppy Mill Project is a none-profit organization whose goal is to raise awareness and educate the public about puppy mills and their connection to puppies sold in pet stores, on the Internet, and through other outlets. They educate, facilitate rescue, and advocate for change. Their main goal is to end puppy mills. Puppy mill operators keep breeding in excess of over 2 million puppies per year, this is causing the overpopulation of dogs and an estimated 1.2 million former puppy mill dogs are euthanized in shelters. These dogs were either sick or aggressive which forced the owners that bought them to give the dog up to a shelter or abandon them (thepuppymillproject). Pet overpopulation is a problem not only for animals but for humans as well because of the increased rabies exposure risk but also because it puts a strain on animal control
A pack of dogs is playing in a ditch which is in the middle of a busy road. Some people in the cars look to see if the dogs' owner is nearby and wonder why anyone would allow their dogs to play so close to danger. Some drivers seem oblivious to the motley assortment romping in the water next to the road. They all keep driving without another thought for the safety or lives of those poor creatures. Unfortunately, this is a common scene in many areas. Unwanted dogs and cats are dumped to fend for themselves because there just are not enough homes for all of them. Where have these unwanted animals come from? The huge population is attributed to out of control breeding due to irresponsible owners, breeding by owners solely for profit without care for the health of their animals and the pet population, and puppy mills or commercial breeding.
