The importance of considering public service in every aspect of many public administration programs allows students to consider important values to implement them in their current or future professional training. By being exposed to the public service values, interns can be able to interact directly with the community through the consideration of such values during the internship practice. The NASPAA advocates for the implementation of public service values into many MPA or MPP programs in their curriculum. The sole purpose of including public service values is to allow the students that are going to experience an internship and for those that are already practicing their profession to impact the formation and practice of the leaders of tomorrow. …show more content…

According to Dick & Holt (2013) argued, “The internship has allowed multiple opportunities for those in the public administration profession to develop students academically and provide practical, professional public service experience” (p. 339). More importantly, interns should value and reflect on the importance of maintaining a positive administrative behavior. This can be achieved by considering the influence of public service through the integration of positive decision making practices. Students should be aware that if there are enrolled into a program that has been accredited by NASPAA, the values of leadership, mission, service, democracy, organizational climate and culture, professionalism, responsiveness and most importantly, public service are the core values of the program. A research made by Molina and McKeown indicated that city managers and officials rated several values with importance for public service. There were participants from the top, middle and front levels of the state and local government. According to Molina & McKeown (2012) argued, “We found through this process that, in describing the role that values play in their work, the participants continually returned to four principal themes: (a) personal credibility; (b) professional competence; (c) respect for democratic principles; and (d) positive relationships with citizens and colleague” (p. 381). In a second survey there were other important values such as integrity and honesty that were identified as the main values of importance for many public servants. This study can be used as a very important example for students interested in seeking a career in the public
