Public relations manages the communication and delivery of communication between an organization or individual and the public and according to some historians dates back to 1800 BC. The primary objective of public relations is to create a deliberate, planned communication strategy designed to enhance the image of a client, be it product, person, destination etc., and generate a positive public image while keeping the interest of the public at the forefront. This would include strategic management of competition and conflict management functions. With an evolving definition that changes with the changing roles of the profession, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) in 2011 lead an international effort to create a definition for public relations that was current and precise enough to replace the definition that was adopted in 1982 by the PRSA National Assembly. The definition that was produced defines public relations as “a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics”. Publics refer to the group of people who follow the issues related to the organization, the term is preferred over stakeholders. ("What Is Public Relations?" PR Definition: PRSA Official Statement. N.p., n.d. Web. 17 Nov. 2013). Public relations professionals craft messages and create campaigns designed to positively impact their publics or the group of people who follow their clients closely. The field is often compared to other communication related occupations such as journalism, advertising and marketing however public relations has its own objectives. Although writing is a critical aspect of both journalism and PR, the channels and scope differs for both and although mass med... ... middle of paper ... ...Martin Luther King, another great public relations communicator. Rustin was also credited with helping King with speech writing, briefing him prior to meetings and handling his press relations, assisting to mold him into a world symbol of peace. Along with Ida Wells, other African American females have been credited with playing a critical role in the history of public relations. That includes Inez Kaiser, who founded Kaiser & Associates in 1957, the oldest African-American, and female-owned public relations firm in the country. She was the first African American female to head an agency with national clients and to join PRSA. She led the way for women like Pat Tobin, founder and past president of the National Black Public Relations Society in 1987, providing mentorship, networking, job opportunities, peer-to peer support, internships and much more for minorities.

The discipline of public relations is a modern profession which has been in existence for only close to a century; however, it has already taken an important role in the fields of business, government, entertainment and non-profit organizations including educational institutions and healthcare organizations. Public relations professionals are required to have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to persuade the public. It is imperative for PR professionals to effectively communicate with its public in order to establish and maintain a positive relationship. Furthermore, public relations professionals must have the ability to work under pressure and effectively manage crisis which may have detrimental effect on the company and the public it serves. Martin Luther King Jr. Though Dr. King was for peace and equality, he had armed guards at the front of his door to ensure safety for his family. Rustin expresses to Dr. King that the civil rights movement need to be completely peaceful and encourages Dr. King to eventually get rid of the guards. Rustin helped pave the way for equal rights in all areas but mostly for jobs for all cultures. There was difficulty for a homosexual person to lead any public events.
What is public relations? PRIA (2014) defined that it is the process to build, maintain and reinforce mutual understanding between an organization or individual and its publics by the designed, planned and sustained effort. Also, it can be understood as a practice of managing the flow of information between an organization or individual and the public.(Grunig& Hunt 1984) However, these two definitions cannot fully describe the term of “public relations”. A long-standing CIPR definition mention a concept of “goodwill”.(Oliver 2009, p. 11) It implies that PR not only refers to publics’ awareness of the information about an organization or individual, but also highly

The field of communications ranges from being in the spotlight to working behind the scenes so to speak. For instance, most technicians, newspaper editors, and directors work to make sure everything is functioning properly and looks neat when they present their work for everyone to see and enjoy. On the contrary, people who have careers more open and can even be considered public figures, such as news anchors, TV hosts, and radio personalities, are in the spotlight. I wanted to be able to choose a field of study that could offer me both. I have always been intrigued by the world of mass communications and when it came time for me to choose a major, I knew I wanted my career to be in Public Relations. A job career
The history of the career field of public relations all started when Julius Caesar hired a team to persuade the citizens that he was doing a good job running the area. Caesar’s influence led to public relations in the Unite States beginning in the 1800’s. Newspapers ran friendly columns to reward advertisers with “free publicity.” Then, in the 20th century, the official job title of “public relations specialist” came into play. Those first public relations specialists were publicity agents and mostly former journalists (Mogel). Now, having a career in public relations most nearly means that a person has the job of creating publicity for a specific brand or person (Lila B. Stair).
The career that I would love to have is to be a publicist. My career goals consist of being a founder and CEO of my own PR firm. So, for my career research, I was trying to find a person who is similar to my race, gender, and spirituality. I wanted to understand the field that I am interested in by interviewing someone who has the same background as I do. By interviewing someone with the same similarities as me, I would get a sense of what my obstacles would be as well as how to overcome the obstacles. Assigned to this assignment, I knew that the overall process would be a little challenging. However, I underestimated those challenges. In my head, I knew exactly what type of person I wanted to interview for this assignment. Again, the person I wanted to interview had to be a faith driven, black or a woman of color, who founded and is a CEO of her own company. I felt like since I had a specific professional in mind, finding a professional would be challenging. In my essay, I will discuss further on my experience of using my network to find the professional to interview, the process of setting up my
In 1976 Rex Harlow tried to create a common definition for public relations, since he believed that the existing definitions “have been so diverse and conflicting,” and “they have failed to impress or satisfy” (Harlow, 1976, p. 34). He defines Public Relations
Today, public relations is a complex profession by thousands of thousands of people all the world to practice. Almost all large and small organizations have their own public relations department or they need to outsource their public relations to a company. Public relations practitioners work for schools and universities, companies, governments, professional and trade associations, hospitals, hotels, non-profit charities, and other else more (Grunig, 2001). Therefore, PR is an important department for organizations.
Good public relations is key to the success of any business. A company must strive to make itself stand out in its particular field. The media can be a very effective public relations tool if it is used right.

Public relations is everywhere today. It is a practice that has become an important aspect of any business venture. Whether an organization is not for profit, for profit, or governmental, they still need and desire to communicate their purpose within the community and public relations allows this to happen. There are several publics in which the PR practitioner must correspond with and each requires a different means of communication. Internal publics are inside the organizations such as clerks, managers, and stockholders. "External publics are those not directly connected to the organization: the press, government, educators, customers, suppliers, and the community" (Seitel, 2004). Each public plays a key role in the PR of the organization. The many functions of PR can also be categorized based on what purpose they serve the organization.
Many studies (Bobbitt, 1995; Cowlett, 1999; Kiloran, 1999; Marken, 2000; Mickey, 1998) reviewed how important the Internet is towards the field of public relations, and why those public relations practitioners are adopting the Internet as a primary public relations medium in the mod-ern age.
