Wake up, get ready, go to school, extracurriculars, come home, repeat. Day in and day out, that is the basic schedule of an average high school student. Students spend an average of seven hours a day in school, so what are they learning there? Here is a list of some important life skills that you will not learn from your public high school:
How to properly use money. How many times have you had to write a check in your lifetime? What about visiting the bank? Well, you can forget about this generation knowing about finances, because the public school system would rather have them learn about parabolas. But that is perfectly fine, you will probably need to use the quadratic equation more than you will ever have to pay taxes.
How to remember information
to apply to something besides a test. Will this be on the test? This is one of the most common sentences to come out of a high schoolers mouth, aside from, “Can I go to the bathroom?” or “How bad will this drop my grade?”. Who could blame them? Since the law No Child Left Behind passed in 2002, students take as many as 20 standardized tests a year, not counting the countless number of quizzes, tests, exams, progress checks, and finals that go along with every class. Cramming for three tests a night is the usual, but that will have to wait until practice is over and the student gets five minutes to eat. How basic government works. Where do you register to vote? Where does the actual voting take place? Did you know that when you graduated high school or is that something that “you just have to learn on your own”? There are 30 basic human rights written out by the United Nations. Can you name them? Neither can most students. I guess it’s not that important, it’s not like it would be important to know that everyone has the right to life and to a trial. How to perform basic first aid. Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. Well, that’s great but how do you stop someone from bleeding out of a cut? What if someone is choking? Knowing how to perform CPR, how to clean and dress wounds, how to prevent infection, how to use a tourniquet, and perform the Heimlich maneuver could save your or other’s lives. But knowing about the obsolete drawings of atoms is definitely more important. Many would say that students are just lazy and would prefer to do no work while they attend school and also that this difficult, pointless work is “good for us”. However, the current education system only teaches to pass tests. A study at the University of Maryland showed that “teaching for the test” leads to, “declines in teaching higher-order thinking, in the amount spent on complex assignments, and in the actual amount of high cognitive content in the curriculum.”
High school or more generally education plays a vital role in society here in the United States. It provides a necessary transition from childhood to adulthood through education and conditioning. Others would argue it serves as a competing group for resources or a center for learning and practicing the implied meanings in society.
School now days kids like to think it is to “hard” or they don't have the motivation to keep up in school. In high school you are being taught responsibility, you learn lessons. Sometimes the hard way. As students, we should try and succeed in academics as well as doing our best to succeed in sports. Sports to some kids are there only way out. Kids that live in bad neighborhoods, kids that hardly have enough to get them by, and them are the kids that realize they need the motivation in school because high school is a big deal.
Freshman fifteen is the NEW EPIDEMIC!!.. or not? In the eyes of freshman, college can be seen as entering the lion’s den when transitioning from high school. Students routines, diets, and moods drastically change resulting in an imbalance of one’s well being. As a way to cope college freshman typically look towards food for a release. Therefore, this is where the term freshman fifteen was born. Freshman fifteen is the idea that in one’s first year of attending college, the student will gain fifteen pounds. On average students are gaining weight at an abnormal pace however, it is not exactly the amount that the media has portrayed.
What is your perspective on today’s high school schedule? From a student’s point-of-view I think it is more stressful than it should be. I believe that we should come to school at the same time as usual but we should only have our four main courses, which are mathematics, english, history, and science. This idea would take so much stress and worrying out of all the students’ minds. First off we would be a lot more focused because there are only four classes instead of seven. Another reason would be that we have a lot more time to do our homework or study for our classes because school would be let out earlier. Surely, there are a lot of students who are involved in after school activities and we will be more effective in our sport or activity because we will have more time to practice.
Some might say that students attending specialized high schools were selected for a reason, as if students ask for this amount of work and lack of relaxation time. Many believe that they should learn to manage their time better and learn how to handle things, however this is untrue. Teens are prone to stress and anxiety due to the changing in hormones and such. Adding all of this unnecessary stress to them will just cause them to become overwhelmed and shut down. Yes, students need to learn how to manage their time wisely, but the solution to balancing your time equally is not getting bombarded with hours of school work after a long school day and commute home.
Studies have suggested that the average adolescent brain doesn’t even start to fully function until around 9:30 am. Many schools already use the suggested later arrival time, so students can be ready to learn when they arrive at school. Another thing that everyone knows or remembers about high school, school is all. of the homework that needs to be done for tomorrow. Plus projects that are due.
They can either choose a major they are already proficient in, want to learn more about or go undecided and choose in the future. In addition to basic subjects such as math, science and English, students take classes within their choice of study in order to obtain a degree. In high school, students are obliged to take electives as well as the basic subjects to get a diploma. As of schedules, college classes can be as long as three hours while high school classes are usually less than one. Also, high school students have approximately three minutes in between classes, are required to meet five days a week and have about eight hour school days as opposed to college where it can be hours between classes, meet more or less than five times a week and school hours can vary from day to
There are many factors that would lead someone to believe that high school is a waste of time. High school has too many distractions for kids to try to concentrate on learning. Since the Columbine tragedy police officers have moved into most high schools and created a distraction for most students. During the day students have study halls that are a huge waste of time, while this time could be utilized to have more instruction or tutoring for kids. Every student is different and has a different learning style. Yet schools don’t separate kids by their learning style to help maximize their curriculum intake. Students are also forced to take classes that they have no interest in and will not be used in their future. All these reasons show how school has too much wasted time and is not doing what it school is intended to do.
1. Explanation and connection: High school learning is so broad and teachers try to narrow everything in one semester and that is very impossible, not to mention most of the things students learn is pointless in real world predicaments.
When we were younger many of us wished that during the school year there would be cancellations or early dismissals. If the school’s education system in our district uses the year round school schedule then children and teachers as well won't feel overwhelmed due to the lack of vacations the traditional school system has. Now, to answer the question fellow parents of children in Danbury and Danbury citizens there should be year round school for these reasons: avoids teacher and student burnout, students will be more prepared for the future, and test score increase.
High school should offer more information about what to expect and how to plan your high school experience upon entering high school. Schools, in general, should be making a much bigger deal about it and offer more information from the start. When a student goes into the ninth g...
When I was young they used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and until six years ago I never knew. It took me exactly eleven years until I figured out the one thing I wanted to do with my life. The very first show I performed in was Guys and Dolls, and from then on my devotion to acting only grew. I feel as though the Early Middle College Program is a good opportunity to further myself in my future goal of a Master’s Degree in Musical Theatre, as well as saving money while doing so. The Early Middle College Program is a very large stepping stone on my way to a Master’s Degree, and is the most effective way to get where I want to be.
As you run into school confused about why there's so many kids in your school as you're walking to your locker your core teacher walks up and says why are you in school this week it's your week off. Traditional 180-day school year with a two to three month summer break kids can lose memory, versus year-round schooling, with shorter two to six week breaks spread throughout the year. School leaders should change their school schedule to year-round school.

High school is a very stressful yet exciting time for all students. Whether or not a student is involved with extracurricular activities like athletics or academics every student becomes busy and creates a tight schedule. It is difficult to balance academics and athletics with a normal social life. Students have a job on top of extra academic events, athletic events, and social events. Working and non-working students are students that have common responsibilities, but they have to be assiduous students in different ways.
