Heart disease being the leading cause of death is surprising to me because I have always thought that this heart disease can be always cured and not many people in the United States would have it. This is shocking to me because everyone knows about heart disease and its very surprising that more people do not take action to reduce the risk because heart disease can be caused by unhealthy diet, obesity, tobacco and smoking. I believe, Heart disease can be controlled by the population of the United States by maintaining a healthy …show more content…

Heart disease is one of the most common causes of the mortality and morbidity in most well developed countries. They come in different forms such as stroke and other cardiovascular diseases and it’s the number one cause of death in the state of America. In the year 2011 alone nearly 787,000 people were killed as a result of this epidemic. And this included Hispanic, Africans, whites and Americans. As for the Asian Americans or pacific Islanders, American Indians and the natives of Alaska, the concept to them was a second only to cancer. However, statistics has proved that a person gets heart attack every 34 seconds and in every 60 seconds, someone dies out of it which include other related event. Public health is a vast field that encompasses many issues. Generally speaking, it deals with the safety and protection of people in a society as well as education
This may be seen in services such as helping underdeveloped countries obtain clean water supply, teaching about hygiene and cleanliness, or dealing with cleanup after a natural disaster. The public health model bridges between the medical and human service model, although is more closely related to the medical model due to its encouragement to utilize health care in order to maintain good health ( Woodside & McClam, 2014).
One of the leading causes of death in the United States is heart disease. “Approximately every 29 seconds one American will have a heart attack, and once a minute one American will die from a heart attack” (Ford-Martin and Odle, 915). According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine men over the age of 45 and women over the age of 55 are considered at risk for heart disease. Heart disease is a major cause of death. It is beneficial to individuals who seek to prevent heart disease to recognize the risks leading to heart attacks as they are one of the primary indications of developing heart disease; especially those that fall into the at risk age groups. These risks consist of some that cannot be changed such as heredity risks, or those that can change such as smoking habits. It is very important to know these specific risks for prevention and to understand the symptoms of heart attacks, such as sweating or the feeling of weakness so if these or other symptoms occur people are aware. Finally heart disease treatment is of vital importance if you experience a heart attack so you can learn how to prevent another one from occurring.
Public health may be defined as “a social and political concept aimed at the improving the quality of life among the whole population through health promotion, disease prevention and other forms of health intervention”.(1) The purpose of public health practice is to improve the health of society rather than individuals and reduce health disparities between individuals, groups, and communities through organized effort of the communities, individuals and organizations. As Marmot points out: “creating a fairer society is fundamental to improving the health of the population and ensuring a fairer distribution of good health”.(2) Besides this, the public health field is expanding to tackling new and contemporary risks: obesity, sexually transmitted
The most important distinction between medical care and public health is public health comes down to prevention and promotion. Medical care comes down to the treatment after the fact. Medical care deals with the individual patient, while public health takes the community and populations into consideration. Public health is much broader of a concept when it comes to comparing it with medical care. Medical care works with the illness once it occurs while public health prevent illness before it even happens through educational programs, policy changes, and research. According to cdcfoundation.org, “a large part of public health is promoting healthcare equality, quality, and accessibility.” Treatment is also a big component to the distinction of medical care and public health. Medical care treatment is from doctors, nurses, etc.; “treatment” in terms of public health is through legislation, laws, and agencies like the Cdc. Public health treats the community through the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Another big distinction comes from the involvement of politics. Public health has correlations to politics. This is because to have prevention
Heart disease is a terrible disease because lots of people have it. “You can prevent heart disease by eating less starch”(The Real Cause of Heart Disease). Due to eating good, healthy foods you can easily prevent heart disease. “You can prevent heart disease by eating less sugars”(The Real Cause of Heart Disease). The foods we eat everyday is the main cause of heart disease and that is why people are affected by it. People do not have healthy eating habits and they do not exercise regularly leading to the disease. The better your healthy habits the better you will be with less disease.
The leading cause of deaths in America isn’t guns, opioids, or even cancer. Obesity takes the lives of more than 300,000 Americans every year. Today, people scrutinize politicians for not creating laws to protect their citizens. The media chooses to focus on lives being lost from guns, drugs and other politically charged topics, dangerous issues within themselves, but except for First Lady Michelle Obama’s plan to reduce childhood obesity, no government initiatives have been made to deal with obesity. During her 2016 campaign, Democratic Nominee Hillary Clinton promised to increase both background checks on guns, and the federal minimum wage, passing immigration reform, and fighting for equal pay. While Republican Nominee and current President
I have chosen Public Health as my career path because I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. Also, I chose healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness. Moreover, Public Health is a challenging, diverse and dynamic field. My philosophy of health is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities and the population. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public
Beitsch et al. (2006) also conveys the main functions of state public health institutions, which include the assessment of diseases, policy development, and the commitment to health protection and promotion activities. While Brumback and Malecki (1996) reveal that the role of public health agencies is to assess and analyse public health problems, form policies, layout development, and implement
Public health can be defined as the approach to medicine that is concerned with the health of the community as a whole. It is about protecting and improving the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease, injury prevention, detection, and control of infectious diseases. Many factors contribute to a long life, including demographics, socioeconomics, genetics, environment, and behaviors. It is important to assess these factors when attempting to increase life expectancy and improve health status, because positive health practices result in higher life expectancies and better health.
Public Health is the most important aspect of medicine. My studies in Public Health will go a very long way to help me grasp the proper concepts and tools needed to work with the government to bring sustainable solutions to health care problems faced by various communities today. Public Health issues touch almost every family in the USA today. I know that if the health sector was better funded, better equipped, and better managed, with clear and effective policies, this kind of suffering could been avoided. I want to go into public health because I believe strongly that I can contribute not only to my fellow Americans, but also to people all over the world. I anticipate that through proper planning, interventions and implementation of effective policies, one will be able to bring about much-needed change through my work with an NGO or non-profit affiliated with the UN.

At an early stage in my medical school in Iraq, I realized the great positive impact of public health on the community in health education orientation, disease prevention and health well-being as a general and what affirm it later, my clinical practice as a physician in Iraq first then Dubai later. The public health was a major integral block in my clinical practice to educate the people towards a healthier lifestyle and implementing the preventative screening measures necessary to get healthy well protected community.
