FEEDBACK AND MOTIVATION OFFERED TO THE PLAYERS BY THE COACH TO IMPROVE SKILLS, COURT PLAY AND MENTAL ATTITUDE
Stuartholme A Grade Tennis Team
Dennis Sheard, (the coach of the A team) was mainly focusing this particular training session on footwork and communication as he felt that the team lacked both these factors during their previous Saturday match. The following are a few quotes from Dennis
 "Awesome footwork Alex, could you feel the difference between that ball and the last?" Dennis indicates when the players use the correct technique and then compares it to a previous shot where they do not. This is enabling them to get used to using internal feedback independently and how they should be executing the shot.
 "Correct technique, but you didn’t squeeze the grip again. The raquet shouldn’t wobble as you hit it." Dennis recognises the problem, explains it and then evaluates it for the player, making it clear what they did wrong and how they can improve it.
 "If you’re partner gets a hard ball to reach I want to be able to hear you encouraging her to get it to it, I want to hear lots of "Go, go go’s!!"" Dennis stresses the importance of communication and encouragement in doubles. This communication increases motivation and a goal to reach for the players.
 "I don’t want to see any slumped shoulders or negative expressions when you miss a ball, that’s the time you need to be even more confident and focused on getting the next point." Dennis reminds the girls constantly on staying positive and not losing their patience during their games as this can make them become over or under aroused. Psychological
Stuartholme D6 Tennis Team
The D6 coach Kate, was fairly quiet during their coaching session and when she did offer advice she would sometimes put it with a shot that didn’t necessarily match the comment, confusing the girls. This is a lower ranked team and the girls are still at quite a cognitive stage of developing their tennis skills, this means it is vital that they receive a lot of feedback and encouragement to persist with the sport. By not offering this Kate may be hindering their development. She did however put forward the following points to the girls.
 "Good shot"
 "Move your feet"
 "Keep your eye on the ball"
 "Swing slower"
Although Kate is offering advice to her players in order for them to improve their skills she needs to be more specific so they can understand their mistakes and correct them.
In order to see outcomes in this area of improvement, we as coaches must re-evaluate not only our athletes, but, in addition, our coaching styles. Of course, we all want to tell ourselves that we are great coaches and it's the athletes who are not following direction...

What if sports and psychology had direct correlation to each other? The Wall Street Journal composed an article by Robert J. called, “Mind Games: Weekend Athletes Seek Help” which pertains to a new form of psychology called sports psychology, and how it could be beneficial to everyone not just world class athletes. Robert interviews non- professional athletes as well as people that exercise for leisure asking why they haven’t considered going to a sports psychologist their response was, “Insurers say counseling to improve athletic performance is the psychological equivalent of cosmetic surgery and the won’t pay for it. (2)” Due to not having the income or the status like Lebron James whom is an infamous two time NBA championship recipient, or the world renowned Olympian Michael Phelps who retires with 18 gold medals. These people cannot successfully fund a health benefit as costly as this or even be recommended for these type of therapeutic services. With that being said sports psychology should be available for all athletes instead of being limited to professional competitors because this form of psychology is altered specifically for the athlete this practice can decrease the statistics of mental health problems, keep athletes on one accord to perform better in there every day demands of life, smoothen the transitions between professional athleticism, and retirement as well as provide promising athletes coping mechanisms to help them adjust in early stages of their careers.
Sports are often identified to have positive influences on many individuals. The sports industry is growing worldwide, especially the basketball industry, which is regarded in second place behind football. The global prevalence of basketball is unquestionable, especially among the young. Basketball is a dynamic team sport that involves a pattern of alternating, active, and skilled movement activities. There are compound demands that require a mixture of individual skills, team plays, strategies, and motivational aspects.
Tennis is a sport that many people love to play. It is not the hardest sport in the world to learn. When playing against someone, it is called a match. Tennis can be played one on one or a doubles match. The main object of the game is to hit the ball over the net, inside of the lines so that the opponent can't get to it. There are two lines about two feet parallel to each other that outline the court. In a singles match, the inner line is the out of bound line, while the outer line is out of bounds in a doubles match. If you want to play, take a look at my two favorite tennis players because they are masters at serving and scoring, a few key aspects of the game.
“Life is like a basketball, it bounces up and down.” I love basketball. I feel affection for the taste of victory, when you win a game. However, I also find losing a worthwhile experience. I worship the feeling where you score a point. It’s slow motion at first, as you gaze at the shot you’ve made, wondering if it is going to manage. Then the taste of your salty sweat and the sound of your pounding heart are back in action. *Swoosh* the ball rapidly swirls into the hoop and falls through the net. It is so stunning, and so breath-taking. “Beautiful shot! BEAUTIFUL!” the coach would yell. Everyone would give a little cheer, and I would smile and look down. I am proud to make the shot, but not cocky about it. It’s for the team, teamwork… I would think in my head. Afterwards, I would be focusing on how to get my head completely into the game, that’s how addicting it is.
I have come to see myself as a leader through this process but also to be a cooperative individual that can see benefit in trying other’s methods. Being coachable is vastly important in sports, but I believe it also applies to a holistic education plan that is instilled by Georgetown. Allowing yourself to try others’ ways is a key to having a growth mindset. I pride myself on being stubborn in my views but gladly accept those who challenge me and prove to me that better ideals or alternatives exist. Volleyball has truly highlighted this with the hours of training with varying coaches and many different methods I have picked up along the way.
Being able to communicate with coaches, health professionals and other people in your team is crucial to becoming a top athlete. For me, it is most important that I communicate openly with my with my coaches and other team members of my running group to ensure that. Being a younger athlete it is vital for me to communicate clearly with my coach in regards how I am adapting to my training load; as studies have shown that poor communication was the leading factor which contributed to burnout in young athletes (Athlete Assessment, 2015).
Motivation needs motivators to help athletes when they seem to have nothing left. Although in sports we want to see consistent plays, performance, and skills, motivation is something that is not consistent. “Athlete’s motivation is being permanently upgraded, developed and changed under the different environmental influences present during sports participation” (Baric, 2007). “Situational factors act interactively on athletes’ dispositions; the variations in sports behavior are the functions of personal characteristics (goals, skills, knowledge, personality traits, etc.) and the environmental influences (physical and social alike)” (Baric, 2007). Personal and environmental influence can make a difference in how an athlete gains motivation. Motivation from a coach or a parent can lead an athlete to either see the support in a negative or positive view. Screaming, yelling, body language, and tone of voice can really present what someone is saying to be considered either in a positive or negative light. As a coach, you have to understand how you are presenting yourself towards your team or athlete. Parents, teammates, and supporters have to analyze how they are coming off within a situation especially when you are trying to motivate someone. When you have a disconnection between your verbal and non-verbal communication, an athlete can take the information and motivation as a negative and not positively. Coaches as everyone else need to learn how to communicate with their athletes and team. Motivation is something all athlete should posse on their own, but sometimes athlete needs support. No championship or a game was won, because of one person it takes coaches, parents, supporters, trainers, and so much more to make an athlete want to win even if it is a backyard game.
